It’s a decent restaurant. Good food quality. Authentic south Indian taste. Located at teen-batti (walkeshwar), where once stood guru-kripa hotel which was my childhood favuraite for batata vada. Its located in posh & gujrati dominated area so naturally its slightly pricy & (gujju level) noisy too. We tried multiple dishes. Ghee masala dosa, kanchipuram idli, amsaddor idli, filter coffe. Chutney variety was also very good. All tasted very good. Sitting was also decent. Good décor and staff service was also good.

Great south indian food & great filter coffee as well.

Very convenient location as well but there is no parking there.

Also, the ambiance is extremely basic so go there if you’re looking for just a plain & simple south indian meal

Regular at this place both at teen batti and juhu ! Their food is just outstanding and probably the best South Indian food you get in Mumbai !

The only drawback is that there’s always a waiting time of 30 mins as they don’t take reservations!

The molgapudi idly, paper dosa and the Pongal is to die for !

I have visited this place several times and it has always been a good experience. Basic south indian food here never disappoints. They don't serve fusion menu .Consistent taste of Sambar and chutneys , prompt service and good staff is add on. Limited menu with good quality. Ambience is ok. Waiting goes upto an hour in weekends. Do try paper dosa.
Overall a good family hangout place.

A perfect & Cosy place to have authentic South Indian food and that too at Malabar Hill location. Although it doesn’t offer any view from the restaurant still it doesn’t need to justify that due to its brilliant quality & taste of food. I can assure that you will be reminded of your authentic South Indian food had at chennai or any authentic place in Tamil Nadu. Everything was great be it idli, Wada, Uttapam, dosa ( many varieties but surely try out the dakshinayan special dosas they are the the most unique & best sodas you ever had) & rice (Briliant curd rice). Just the drink ginger ale was not up to mark but rest everything was perfect & way beyond any one’s expectation of authentic South Indian food in mumbai. Just they need to improve the drinks offered with the meal.

The South Indian bug in me is truly satisfied today.. Head out to Dakshinayan if you're a South Indian food lover... Because this place won't disappoint you. There's a unique charm in the South culture, Dakshinayan gives you a glimpse into it while you sip over some pipping hot sambhar or sip onto your favorite filter kapi. So it's a 10 on 10 when it comes to the ambience. The taste of Bisibelle Rice will keep lingering till I visit this place again.. And I know I'm visiting this place very soon again.

This has become my GOTO South Indian place for lunch. The Mini Masala Idlis, Rava Dosa and freshly made Gingerale are a must order!
If you are still hungry you should order their cheese onion uttapam made crispy upto perfection.
And if you are profusely hungry and with a group of people you must order the 2 FT paper butter/ cheese dosa!
To end your meal try and pack in their Gulab jamuns. I’m sure you will leave this place satisfied.

Always gives excellent service and the owner is always there to make sure you have a fantastic experience.

After visiting the Juhu outlet we are here to try this one along a family Sunday brunch kind.

Okay first thing first there is no parking around this area this might be an elite location but the suburbs are much better in the parking space.

The waiting is always there because of the brand value which it carry’s along.

The place was pretty small compared to the Juhu outlet. I can’t say squeezy but just average to accommodate people.

The order was just great with nothing to crib about

Rava masala dosa - gets it hot and authentic

Molgapodi idili - this one is the mini idils that comes with gunpowder and some ghee aside. Just brilliant I must say !

Lassi - great stuff man

Filter coffee - bliss.

South Indian food buffs, this way please! The tiny, no-frills, rather cramped eatery serves tasty, authentic vegetarian Tamilian fare. First things first... order a glass of chilled Thayir (buttermilk) that contains crushed curry leaves, and some mango pickle pieces! They serve the true-blue Rassam and the Molagapodi, the kickass gunpowder! They don’t quite ace all of their dishes, and it can get noisy. But we still liked the fluffy-yet-firm idlis... Lemon Sevai and the Nai Roast Dosai with golden rich ghee. We also tried Kancheepuram Idli, Vannei Idli and the spicy Chettinad Maligu Dosai. The Bisi Bele Bhaat had both body and flavour.

For desserts, Rava Sheera is perfect. however the coffee disappoints!

Apart from the waiting, this place never lets you down. If u in the mood for Delicious South Indian veg cuisine, head here.

The mini idlis with gun powder masala, the ragi dosa, the moong dal or even a mixed pulse dosa are to die for. Even the sambhar rice or other rice preparations are amazing. Everything comes fresh & pipping hot to the table.

It’s a quick service restaurant so you can be in & out within 30mins. The place is a bit cramped & there is no washroom so keep your bladder empty when you arrive.

Visit Day Date and Time:- Sunday 4-Feb-18, 10.30 p.m.

“Dakshinayan” one of the popular place in Mumbai for South Indian food which has overall two outlets in Mumbai i.e. Malabar Hill and Juhu.

Though it’s not authentic South Indian food place like the ones which we have in Matunga but it’s still quite popular amongst the foodies due to its food taste.

Recently visited the Malabar Hill outlet with couple of friends for dinner and we had to wait approx 20mins to get the table.

Ambience:- It’s Compact outlet with basic and simple interiors.

Food:- We tried out following from the menu:-
• Rasam Idli:- Tiny Idli’s are dipped in hot pipping tomato rasam. Nice and tasty.
• Bisibelle Hulianna:- Rice and lentil are cooked with vegetables and spices which taste really yum. It’s is served with typical South Indian Papad.
• Mysore Masala Dosai:- It was basic and ok
• Pesarattu Masala Dosai:- It’s basically green gram Dosa which is served with onion masala. Must try one.

All dishes are served with three types of unlimited Chutney and unlimited Sambhar.

Recommendations:- Rasam Idli, Bisibelle Hulianna and Pesarattu Masala Dosai.

Service:- Quick.

Experience:- Overall a good experience and nice to try out tasty South Indian food.

Note:- Above review is based on personal experience.

Dakshin ka swaad at its best🍚
This place is located at malabar Hill and is road touch so u won't be lost in any lanes.
The humble resto serves lipsmaking Food 🍲
Things i loved the most were:
*Molgopudi idli - many tiny masala clad idlies served with 2 really tasty chutneys. The masala of these idlies is something i have never tasted before. Totally recommended...!
*Filter Coffee ☕ - very few places serve the authentic filter coffee and being a fan of it already had to try it here. This place did justice to it. Just had to add a lil sugar to make it perfect.

Average - Rava dosa. Didn't find it crisp or anything exceptional
The samabar and chutney were both v tasty. The consistency was good too. Wasn't the Watery sambar like how some places serve. The chutneys served wt Molgopudi idli were extremely tasty and that whole dish is exceptional.
Looking fwd to trying more of their specialities.

Why Dakshinayan's Taste is a Double Edged Sword.

Lets get the formalities out of the way.

The place is hurriedly done up but tasteful, you can make out the lack of finish but it hardly diminishes the vibe.

Parking is possible in non towing hours or a little distance away where the legality is ambiguous.

The Food is really tasty.

Not in a rustic small joint or stall kind of way but the traditional Udipi Engineered kind of way.

FRANKLY.

Udipi food in Mumbai has hit a plateau that's so high its almost a peak.

The only discerning factors are price, location, interiors etc.

In Dakshinayans case it is the few Extra South Indian Style Dishes like Bisi Beli, curd rice etc.

Make no mistake everything has an engineered taste and the Sambhar is Sweet and the Dosa has that Sugar enhanced golden brown goodness we have gotten so used to.

The dosas, sambhar, rice tastes nothing like it would do in Tamil Nadu or whichever state they are from.

People who have started to believe udipis etc are authentic need to go Poornima (fort) Matunga or the South itself to taste what actual "authentic" food tastes like.(authentic is another oxymoron but read my other reviews to find out why).

All udipis are 3 in Mumbai unless something is drastically wrong. The extra .5 here is for not having the nachos, Chinese, Pav bhaji, Shindian etc etc etc .

So where is the double edged sword??

I give 2 #$%^ about authenticity. The food here is really tasty.

But do you know why.

2 words.

Mono-Sodium Glutamate. (ok 3 maybe)

Ajinomoto for the initiated.

The super taste enhancer that may or may not kill you but boy does it make your food taste good.

How do I know?

I have an mild allergy to it, someone I know has a strong one.

Both have reacted whenever we have eaten here. (mine is extreme thirst , hers is water retention none are fatal).

Mind you I know other Udipis who are guilty of the same.

I'm a fan of anything in moderation even narcotics....as long as they suit you.

As for you ....the choice is yours.

-s difficult getting seating in peak hours, legally ambiguous parking.

+/s AJINOMOTO, this quality is standard now.

+s not an Udipi (seriously we need more places with limited curated menus), vibey.

Despite the great food I wouldn't call this a culinary destination unless there is a particular dish that you have taken a liking to...or you stay in the immediate vicinity.

And even if you like a particular dish find it at an Udipi in your locality it will probably taste the same.

DOSA! UTTAPAM! I've specially put these words in caps just to grab your attention. My last review about a south indian restaurant was rated 4.5. But this, 5 is also less. Till date, dakshinayan is my favourite south indian stand alone restaurant. The dosas were huge and perfectly perfected! The sambhar i had here was the best in mumbai! A perfect balance of sweet sour and spice. The coconut chutney was amazing as usual but they also serve tomatoe and onion chutney.
The uttapam was crispy from the edges and soft in the centre.
I ended my meal with a nice south indian filter coffee.

"Jack and Jill climbed the Malabar Hill they spotted Dakshinayan Restaurant". . Location is kind of amidst the signal and parking is a pain though. Inside the ambience is OK. (3/5)

Food: dosa and idlies orders were crisp to perfection. Chutney and Sambhar were great too. So nothing over the edge as compared to a well known Udipi or South Indian Restaurant. (4/5)

Price : "Jack fell down and broke his crown and Jill came tumbling after". It says it all. (2/5).

Union verdict: Can go for tick in the box to try something nice but be ready to pay for the upmarket not so great looking restaurant.

One of the few restaurants in Mumbai that serves close to authentic South Indian dishes. Tried lots of dishes and liked most of them. For people who are confused on what to pick from their menu, here are a few recommendation - Molagapodi Idli, Masala medu wada, Chettinadu Dosa, Coconut Sevai and Bisibele Baat. The service is prompt and the food fresh and delicious. Their menu has a lot of options with in house variations like thayir idli which is worth a try. Their filter coffee is the perfect ending for the meal. The seating is small and if you are going in a large group on a weekend, the waiting could be a lot. But this place is a must visit for all South Indian cuisine lovers. A very satisfying meal at nominal prices !

A typical South Indian restaurant which is located opposite the teenbatti police chowki.
It is quite small in terms of the number of tables and the ambiance isn't great at all. However, it does go pretty packed on the weekends especially.

Being an all vegetarian restaurant, it has plenty to offer in jain too.

We called for the mini masala idli which was really soft and delicious. It had pieces of tomato with cut pieces of idli and was served with coconut chutney and sambhar. Must try.

The mysore sada dosa is another must try. The dosa is decent in size - not too big, not too small.

The tomato uttappa wasn't as crispy as expected but nevertheless it was also delicious except too many chillies and lesser tomatoes.

The rava sada dosa is also good and crispy.

The appam and stew are average. Not too great.

Also, they are well staffed and service is prompt but the pricing is average as it is a decent South Indian place.
Parking can be a major issue.

One of the lesser known places unless your from this side of town but absolutely mind blowing food. In a city stuffed with countless udipis5and road side stalls that serve the south indian delicacies this place surely deserves a mention as different. Be it the butter soaked idli or ghee dripping dosa. What I find most mouth watering are the gun powder mini idlis. .. just the perfect place to enjoy a lovely lunch that will leave u stuffed and satisfied 😊

They serve amazing variety of chutnies and unlimited sambar too. Must visit if you have like authentic South Indian food.

What an amazing experience! This South Indian restaurant in Walkeshwar is a true gem. From the moment we walked in, it was evident that authenticity was their priority. We sampled a wide range of dishes, and each one was a delight. The dosa here is a must-try; it was crispy on the outside and bursting with flavor on the inside. The service was not only great but impressively quick. This restaurant has a certain charm as an old joint, and it's a testament to their consistent quality. Don't leave without trying their surprise item, the Malai Kulfi – it's an unexpected delight. The only drawback is the lack of parking space, but the fantastic food more than compensates for it. They cater to vegetarians and Jains, which is a huge plus. We personally enjoyed the Tamarind Sevai, Curd Vada, Podi Dosa, and of course, the Malai Kulfi. Highly recommended for anyone craving authentic South Indian flavors in a cozy setting. This place truly delivers on taste and variety.

The service is on point. The food served is also of good quality. On weekends there's generally a waiting of around half an hour. We ordered steamed idli, Dakshinayan 's speciality - Black Pepper Dosa (don't remember the original name) and lemon soda. The experience was good and would love to visit again.

I had a quick lunch here and it was awesome. The looks are simple but aesthetic, the service is prompt and the food is wonderful. Authentic South Indian cuisine that tasted really yummy. The vadas were crispy outside and super soft inside, the dosa was mouth watering and the chutneys were tangy and tasty. I need to mention that the sambhar I had here was one of the best that I have ever tasted.

Such a nice restaurant in the vicinity of isckon with mind blowing South Indian food! Really appreciate their simplicity and humble food! Filter coffee was a bit ok as compared to other authentic South Indian outlets!

South Indian (filter) coffee was alright, as was the tomato-onion uthappam. However, it's somewhat pricier than the typical Udupi restaurants and without any uptick in quality that I could discern. The sweet lassi was also alright, albeit the portion size was smaller than I expected.

Food is good, but it's quite a small place having no restrooms. And this is the first restaurant I have ever visited which doesn't have a wash basin for hand wash; finger bowls only 🫣 Seating could have been better as they have mostly benches, no chairs /sofas Ghee sada dosa was too good. Onion rava sada dosa was sprinkled with too much onion. Mini idlis were good.

We visited Dakshinayan after a longtime. The feel of the place still remains the same. The quality of food is consistently good with proactive service. They take pride (+vely) in what they serve and make it very comforting for you to enjoy your meals. We had their masala dosa, onion rava dosa and filter coffee. The masala dosa was crispy, masala warm and filling. The rava dosa was very well made though I do feel the size of rava dosa has gone a bit smaller as compared to my past experience (or may be it was one of case). The filter coffee was perfect and quantity was good as well. Overall it was good to re-visit Dakshinayan after a longtime and we hope to visit them again soon! Cheers!

Enjoyed masala dosa and rava onion dosa with hubby , very tasty sambhar chutney. Mixed Uttapam was soft and delicious. I asked for complimentary Malgapodi chutney and they served it with ghee . The service was also very quick. Worth going for a meal. A nice open window facing the sea would have been nicer though.

Food was ok, a bit over priced. Tried the masala wada and idli rasam. Wait time could be improved.
