The ambience is kind of old school but worth it. Polite staff, good service and food tastes good, ordered for Herb chicken sizzlers with beer and it was a bliss.

This is a beautiful place tucked away from the noisy streets and in a peaceful setup. You would notice the Iranian touch to the ambience. We loved the beef chilly, pepper prawns, prawn fried rice, mutton kababs. Would definitely go again to try my favorite dhansak.
It’s a small place but again nice fun i went in with my friends we enjoyed the whole fun of being together eating gossiping and drinking like a fish

Cafe Universal is a quaint parsi restaurant tucked away (literally) at the corner of a busy road in South Mumbai near CSMT. We went there for a late night dinner after a tiring day at work and felt immediately relaxed by the unassuming but welcoming old school ambience of the place. We ordered Chicken Munchow Soup, Chicken KungPao and Chicken Shashlik Sizzler. The portion sizes were generous, taste great and service super fast. Definitely recommended if you are looking for a place to relax for a bit after work before taking a train home. Will go again if I get a chance.

Just at the corner, a lovely restaurant. Ample seating.
Still Old Charm and elegant interiors. Very well done up. Restaurant was very clean. They serve both food and drinks (including alcohol).
We tried the,
1) Meat Chilly (dry, chinese style)
2) Mutton Dhansak (Parsi special, rice with gravy)
3) Roast Meat Sandwich (Meat Chilly Fry in toasted double decker slice bread)
4) Caramel Custard (soft and fluffy, the best I've ever tasted)
The dishes were all super and tasty. Prices was alright.
Service was fast and smiling. Lots of foreigners regularly visit this restaurant.
This place is totally worth going! Amazing food quantity and quality. The place is not very huge but the ambience is very antique and decent. The waiters are really good and the time to make a dish is also comparatively less. The food is very affordable and yummyyy!!! Recommended place to chill. There are a lot of offers and happy hours on Wednesday. There's student discount too.

I recently discovered this place when I was looking to eat a sizzler. Were much delighted to visit such an old legendary cafe running since 1921. Firstly the ambience is really awesome and cossy. It has this old Bombay Irani vibe. The ceiling with its wooden beams is really great and the tables and chairs are very reminiscent of what old Bombay restaurants used to be. There are drinks available at a reasonable price but it prides. The food is very good and quite affordable.
I tried their chicken sizzlers it was really good and something different......
I also tried fish and chips simple but tasty as pomfret was served........
Also tried typical parsi tea which was ok.....
Would like to definitely visit this place again to try something new.
This is a vintage IRANI place located in the fort area. it mostly attracts the office crowds who come here for a drink or two after office. We ordered the Fish and chips ( promfet fish ) to start with. It was well cooked and accompanied by fries. We ordered the chicken tikka and chicken malai kebab as we were only in the mood for starters. The chicken starters were accompanied by onion salad and green chutney which made the taste all the more better. The quantity of food is good. The staff here is courteous. The place does not have air conditioning but it has a nice old heritage kind of feel to it.

Hello friends I want to share with you all the superb experience I had at this cafe. I ordered universal special mixed vegetable platter with garlic naan it was simply delicious, the vegetables were fresh and cooked well and the service was prompt and I loved the ambience and my sister ordered spicy prawn shashlik sizzler which was amazing. The quality of the prawn was excellent and my niece ordered a Paris dish chicken dhanshak with kebab which was also perfectly made as we shared everything and went home satisfied. So friends this is one place where you get parsi food,sizzles,burgers, north Indian, Chinese and much more. This has become one of my favourite eating den and a must visit.
One of the best things about this place, is it's old retro vibe which takes you back in time. The price is quite steep for the food but it's ok since the quality and quantity is good for 2. Had the Universal Club Sandwich & Chicken Salad. As of now, not disappointed. When it comes to hard liquor, it is expensive. Cocktails are ordered based on the availability of the bartender, 😂 that's the sad part but If you don't mind the Draught tower with company to drink along then it's worth it.

Very nice and calm place to spend your evening. Enjoyed the place a lot. Taste of the food was good. The staff was friendly. This is a much loved place for ones who wanna spend their evenings in peace and fun
It has become a monthly routine to visit this place for its unique vibes. Love the ambience of the place where it feels we are back in the 80s with these fine wooden benches and tables. The interior set up is really eye soothing. Although the place is non air conditioned, there's good ventilation so its not much of an issue.
The food's really up to the mark.
Fried wonton chicken served with the sauce is just perfect in its sweet and sour flavour.
Spicy wings may take a burn but its worth it cause it's really flavoursome.
Beef sizzler in pepper or mushroom sauce is a must at this place and is good enough for 2 people.

Was in Fort on hot blazing Tuesday, last, and had to choose between the popular watering hole in Colaba and some place in Fort so that we wouldn't have to step out much in the blazing heat. Chose Cafe Universal hands down. Not a quaint or a bullet ridden Irani joint but a wood polished and etched in glass, less crowded, nice joint.
This was our monthly rendezvous between me and old school bum chum at the corner of Adi Marzban path. We traded jokes, stories and what's new over a pitcher of chilled beer and nuts.
Food wasn't the core objective, though Irani grub was the rubadubadub. Ordered gourmet Iranian Sabzi with mutton and the quintessential Sali boti mutton with pav. Food was good, quick, fresh, succulent and tasty Indeed for us to swear quick return.
Ambience : 9/10 Excellent wood work interior and less phirang crowd. Also not too many waiters staring at you.
Taste: 6/10 : Good for a repeat
Value for Money: 6/10; worth it for a 5 hour sit out.

This is a quaint cafe which takes you to the Brtish Era with its ambience and old charm. This quite place is perfect to enjoy your drink. They have all types of cuisines in their food menu, from American dishes to indo-chinese to sizzlers, and everything comes in large quantities. Taste is unique and is fairly good.

Quite known for their irani dishes. Well I tried here Chinese which was average and worth the money I paid here.
Chicken Chilly with Fried Rice - Good to go.. Portion was bit less. But good in taste
Tried their veg sizzlers with extra noodles and cheese, well lot of French fries and less stir fried veggies. But the patty and sauce used was amazing.
Couldn't clicked more pictures as my battery was dead.
Service was super quick and more of the crowd comes here to booze.

One of my most favourite places in Colaba. It always feels like a regal place to visit in order to enjoy some really tasty treats. Although they have a very vast menu, which I am sure offer some very delectable eating options, I have always toed the line and made my way to the sizzlers section of the menu. The Cottage Cheese Patty and the spinach and corn patty sizzlers are truly unique and fantastic options to eat on the day you really feel like stuffing yourself with something yum. On the rare occasion that i have strayed to other sections of the menu I have tried and enjoyed the spinach and corn burger, pesto open sandwich.

If you're looking for a man vs food moment, this meat-laden OMG burger that has got about 6 layers of well done tender flavoured beef steak layered with cheese in between, lettuce & onions served with a lovely side of French Fries is a task to finish but worth every bite making this one of the greatest burgers ever.
This is one of the burgers you have to eat it with a fork & knife, because it's just a gets messy.
Truly a tantalising Taste!!

Shashlik is like a kebab of cubed beef in a spicy Steak is a one of a kind with their Home Made Garlic sauce which is their special sauce that is poured upon the Steak filled up with rice and other stired fried vegetables.
The Sizzlers out here is truly filling, the quantity is more here with a quantity suffice for two, not unless you got a great appetite.

Nice cafe. No crowd so you can get table easily. Fries were okay but could have been better. Schezwan sizzling chicken was great. Fish and chips is a nice dish if you like fish. For me the best dish was beef chilly.
Amazing kheema gotalla and mutton cutlets. Beer on the side doesn't hurt either. One of the few good open air Irani cafes left in South Bombay. That being said, this place is neat and clean too, unlike some of the other similar cafes. Overall, highly recommended.

what a place! from the moment I entered and laid my eyes on the decor to savoring their delicacies while sitting amidst the calm and relaxed vibe of this legendary place for a late lunch on a public holiday, I felt I was getting an exquisite taste of a rich heritage. it's an old school place which has stood at it's current location since 1921 nonchalantly among the ever mushrooming eateries and floated above the pace of time. I love everything about the joint, the font on the entrance, the wall decor, the varied liquor bottles placed on wooden stands against the wall, the rustic wooden furniture as if picked up from a flea market and then refurbished, the people who served us always with a smile and has done so for more years than I can count, the courteous service and definitely the elderly couple who quietly sits there radiating wisdom. But till now, I haven't spoken about the food. I suppose that's a given. everything from their danshak to keema ghotala, beef shashlik, even their fresh lime soda is spot on in terms of authenticity, flavors, taste and serving. I love historical places and this place sits right on top of my list. would go again and again. go on a lazy Sunday and just relax, have a couple of drinks and order traditional Parsi food while absorbing the richness of South Bombay. what more could you ask for?
A classic iconic restaurant which delivers what it promises. Have been here over the years but most recently 19th Feb. We ordered a classic American Style burger and the O.M.G burger. The food was good the only disappointment was some of the beef was rather then expected. All in all a good meal.
Beautiful ambience in the cafe. It's old school, with wooden benches, stained glass and these beautiful shaded lamp like chandeliers. Coming to the food, it's ok. We ordered the hot and sour vegetables with boiled rice which were very typically Sino-Punjabi (aka comforting) with a healthy mix of vegetables. Cocktails are avoidable here, better to stick to bottled drinks.

After a long time, I visited Cafe Universal solo for my quick lunch. Am impressed with its new set up and ambiance.
I ordered for Kheema Ghotala ( Rs. 240/- ) as suggested by the waiter which is minced mutton cooked with typical parsi ingredients and eggs. Kheema goes well with pav. Mediam spicy taste was average and dessert cameral custard was delicious.
The place is ideal to unwind and enjoy beer after hard day's work. The restaurant draws decent crowd for food & services all the time.
It is a dimly lit café in the ballard estate area. The ambience is cozy and it has an Iranian feeling to it. We started off with veg nachos that tasted more like nacho bhel with nacho chips, tomatoes, onions and a dash of lemon to it However, the sizzler was not upto the mark. Over all a decent place to have lunch with your colleagues
I have been visiting this cafe for last 15 years and taste of the food and drink have not changed a bit. They have maintained the standard. Food is delicious. The ambience is very nice. I would recommend the sizzlers and the OMG burger. The quality of the food and service is excellent. The dessert are amazing especially the bread pudding and Caramel Custard. I have recommended many people always and will keep doing the same. The is very welcoming. I would rate it 10/10 in every thing.

Laid back, high ceiling, old school and chill place in the middle of a bustling city. Good place to catch up with your friends over a beer or family over dinner or even to take your date. Affordable on pocket. Keep your phones away on some of the best wooden tables I've ever seen in a restaurant and have a memorable chat over a good dinner.
Oh yeah get some buff nachos while you're at it, trust me you won't regret the decision.

Came here last night for dinner with some friends. Great food for the price and also very accommodating for a really large group. It was a Friday and they were busy but still managed to provide good service and get everyone’s order correct - which was great! I usually get the chicken lollipops or steak and a fresh lime soda. Will be back :)

I've been discovering newer places to visit, townside, preferably pocket friendly. Cafe Universal was recommended to me by a cousin. It's situated in one of the quiet lanes at Fort. A very cozy place, I'd say. We ordered for fish and chips and Sholay kebabs, both of which were tasty. Our plan was to drink so we didn't eat much. Although it's not pocket friendly, really, I'd recommend this place for the food and ambience. I'll be going there sooner, to try something new on the menu.

Old-world charm in beautiful Ballard Estate. Even though it's on the main road, it is easily missed as the façade blends in with the neighbouring buildings. The small entrance belies a spacious and cool interior. My visit was blessedly peaceful, arriving as I did to beat the lunchtime crowd.
I tucked into the club sandwich before I could take a picture! It was stuffed to the brim with all good things - buff, chicken, pork, eggs and cheese. Attentive service along with a calm ambience - a real treat away from the hustle bustle of the city.

It's always a great experience at cafe universal.
Btw you can miss out on the dessert. You can easily find an alternate for it - that to in a less price ! Also I didn't like the bread pudding much.

Cafe Universal is an old Iranian cafe in Mumbai with lovely decor. During my visit, I ordered beef chili and mutton keema. The beef chili was tender and delicious, but the mutton keema was just average. I also had Gin & Tonic, which was a refreshing option on a sunny day. If you're in Mumbai, I would recommend visiting Cafe Universal for a relaxing experience. The cafe is also popular among foreigners. Overall, my experience at Cafe Universal was good.

Had been here first time in 2008. Good vibe. Good food. Beer pitcher or tower is served also serves hard drinks. Closes early at around 2230 or 2300 hrs. Staff who takes order is rude though. Another drawback is no air conditioning. It can get hot and humid in Mumbai.
A lovely place to sip a chilled beer with family and friends. I was extremely impressed by the vintage looks of the Interiors and it was really pleasant inside even during the heat of summer during May Season. The food was delicious and the beer was affordable. The Parsi style Bombil Fry and Chicken Burger is a must try here, it was yum😋

From the list of few old placed that remind us about old Mumbai. My love for Peace loving Parsi community can be one more of the reasons to visit this place. Takes you back to old Mumbai memories.
The interior has obvious impact of Parsi/Persian culture. The old furniture with the addition of modern bench like sitting.
They serve casual food items which will suite well along a pitcher of beer 🍺. Food options are good and the portion sizes are also enough.

Had a very great time here ! No words can describe how awesome of an experienced had ! The food was tasty, present well and the ambiance was beautiful too ! The owners Mr.Ustad and his Wife are Gems!!! I happened to misplace my masks and when they realised that I was searching for it, they gave me a new one instead. I will definitely visit this place again !
