Traditionally, Tanjore has been connected to the Chola dynasty which expanded its presence across India, South east Asia and Srilanka. Nice to find some of the artifacts linking to the ancient city. Traditional Tanjore art laden plate and dancing dolls were anyways missing. Pongal, had the traditional touch. Sambar needs improvement. Moorkolambu (kadi) has the southy touch.

I am a regular here and I find staff warm and friendly and food always consistently well prepared and good saves me going to matunga.
I am appalled by some of the negative comments which falls in 2 categories. People who come after 3 pm and don't get full menu or same quality of food or people who find it expensive for a dosa/ idly.
First type of people come on be considerate they served you despite not regular hours. I just find them snobs
Second complain : what you pay is what you get the ingredients and taste is fresh. There are plenty of venues services ₹ 40 idly if you want to pay less and don't care about what goes in your body. I would take my family here if i dislike someone i will take them across the road for regular dosa

I am in love with the food here. The restaurant is  a bit small, but they make it up with their delicious food, Carnatic music that brings back so many memories and really sweet hostesses who greet you with a warm smile. The steamed idlis are so fluffy and good, it makes me want to go back to the place over and over again. Yes, the price is a bit steep for a south Indian food, but its worth every penny. My new favourite here is bisi bele bath. If you're in Colaba, you should go to this place, trust me you won't regret it!

I'd visited the place about a month ago. New to the town, I was missing home cooked 'Thakali Chutney' (Tomato Chutney), and very, very few south Indian restaurants serve it. I was actually on a hunt for such a place. And to add to it, listening to some nice Carnatic music took me back home. A little overpriced, but like another reviewer pointed out,  it's probably because of the location.
A lot can be done to the interiors to make it a more wholesome experience, but that's just an architect's point of view.
Definitely going back sometime when I am in Colaba! And so must ya'll.

Though the place is tiny, food is extremely tasty. It's known for authentic andhra food. We tasted molgapudi idli (the awesomest), rasam wada, Mysore masala dosa and payasam. The taste is good. Quantity is good so as is rightly priced.

I see no reason why this place is rated so low on Zomato. I went here on the recommendation of a friend and completely enjoyed the food. They have a very elaborate South Indian menu that offers thali, rice varieties as well as tiffin items like dosa and idli. Authentic tamil variations in the form of idli dipped in molgapodi was finger licking good. Also tried the tomato rice which was delicious. Ended the meal with a nice glass of butter milk. The decor and service is simple yet lively. There is karnatic music playing in the background which is delightful. Slightly overpriced for South Indian food but considering the Colaba location and the experience they offer I did not mind the pricing. I am definitely going to be a recurring visitor!

It was a pleasant surprise to stumble upon this small unassuming delight of a restaurant. The food and ambience takes one right into the heart of Tamil Nadu. Extremely true and authentic to their claim of 'Creating a Novel Dining Experience' inspired by 'The Rich Traditional Culture of Tanjavur'. Try their Panagam and assortment of Dosas for a delicious and healthy meal.

Being a resident of matunga, getting out that area for a nice south Indian meal would be something of a question but, driving all the way up to colaba at Tanjore was a good decision on a Saturday night. In a tiny little place with culturally built interiors and a lot of ethnicity flourishing, it's a mini south India trip in itself. Pannagam and adai with avial were one of the best dishes I tried. The food is less oily, good quality and most important, pocket friendly. The tiny little place is quite a hidden gem on the hustling roads of colaba causeway. A must try !

I've been here a number of times and have had mixed experiences. The ambience is decent, and service is good.
First I'll mention the positives. Out of the dishes I've tried, molagapodi idli was awesome. Masala vada, umpa and medu vada was quite good. They prepare many of the dishes fresh on order, including vada. Vasantha neer (coconut based drink), was delicious, and a very new experience for me.
As for the negatives, one thing  I noticed was the lack of consistency in taste. The upma I had on two different days tasted quite different. One of the dishes I tried based on the reviews, Adai with Avial was really bad. It was extremely sour. Another strange thing is the menu is weirdly priced. A plate of masala vada, which has three decently sized pieces of vadai, and 3 chutneys, sambar etc are priced at R 120, which I find to be reasonable. At the same time, a small cup of filter coffee costs again 120 bucks. I can get a really good latte at most cafes for that price. And moreover, the coffee wasn't that good either.
In general , I will definitely visit again just for the molagapodi idli, and vasantha neer

Being a North Indian, I am always craving for tasty, authentic South Indian food and I must say that this place satisfies my desire completely. We were a group of 3 friends and tried a couple of dishes. We started off with Rasam Vadai (which was outstanding) and Mulgapodi idli. This was followed by Rava Masala Dosa (served with 3 different chutneys), Sambhar rice and Mysore Masala Dosa which were all very tasty and filling. Entire meal was accompanied with refreshing Buttermilk. The place is very cozy with a quaint home like feel. Soothing Carnatic music in the background just adds to the pleasant and amazing experience.

If you are around Colaba and craving for South Indian food then this place is a must try.

Kudos Team Tanjore by Angie !!

I will definitely keep coming again ….

The only drawback about this little treasure is that it is so unpretentious that people will just pass by without discovering it. I have visited it thrice.

If you are looking for tasty i.e. "modified"  food for popular tastes you probably won' like Tanjore but if you are looking for spicy Tanjore food cooked with great love and authenticity this is the place.  Its like the difference between authentic Chinese food and Indian Chinese food. This place is authentic food hence you pay a slight premium as compared to an overcrowded Udipi place that churns out food.

You will find that your course comes with all the essential side items like coriander chutney, coconut chutney, red chutney (imbli + chilly ?) and sambhar. Not just watery sambhar  with only the one coconut chutney as can be expected in a amass production south indian restaurant.

I recommend the chaas (butter milk), the Pepper coated idli and the Gunpowder idli. I forget the tongue twisting traditional names - no offence intended.

A small South Indian restaurant specialising in food from Tanjore. I had the mini thaali and it was delicious; comprised of avial, sambhar, rasam, kadi, rice, puris, papad, yogurt, potato masala, pickle and sheera. The food was perfectly spicy, the desert was not overloaded with sugar and the the portions are appropriate. All the food is prepared fresh, which is how I like it and you can taste it being so. Since it's a small eatery and it gets busy during the lunch period, you may have to wait.

Had visited Tanjore when it first opened doors. Don't usually enter a Vegetarian restaurant but tried it out for a change & loved it for a South Indian restaurant. Ate some medu vadai along with a mysore dosa & loved it. They then updated their Facebook page showcasing a new menu. Went down to tanjore, to check it out..
Tried their Ghee Onion Rava Dosa. Tasted crisp & delicious. Ghee tasted just like home & got to know, it's actually made in house. Made all the difference.
Washed down the meal with a black coffee. Well, I've never been a fan of milk coffee, hence i did not have the recommended filter coffee but instead tried their black coffee. So good!!
Service was welcoming, friendly & prompt. Staff make sure to customise things for ya so get out there & have what ever South Indian fare pleases ya.
They don't get 5 cause they don't serve bacon. Oh well.

Ordered the tanjore thali and mini tiffin and the vasantha neer. Vasantha neer was refreshing and cool and quite light. The mini tiffin ( pongal, idli, dosa and vada and sheera) came quickly and was quite filling but the sambar refill and chutney took ages and came after we finished the food. The waiting period for thali can vex even the patience of Job and should not be ordered by anyone who is ravenous. The thali does not offer anything unique and is definitely not worth the wait. The restaurant is small and if you sit near the entrance the door opening and closing right on your side can be a disconcerting. But overall a good first experience and one can try the mini tiffin which is a value for money.

If you are a south Indian and looking for authentic south Indian fare you would find this restaurant a little bit of a disappointment. Except for their thali which was both taste wise Good and cost wise effective the food was average and the cost was very high. Their chutneys and gravies are good. They need to work on the Dosa and the vadas too. I am unable to compare it with other South Indian fares available in the city as I have not tried any. The hotel in itself was a bit cramped for a group of four. Worth a try.

Situated near the fire station, this is a quaint little place that caught my fancy right when it was opened. Eager to try the food, I went with my family and found the food to be good and the ambience calm. Although it gives away the aura of being an expensive place where simple food of authentic taste is served, it is actually not that expensive. The cost for 2 was around INR 650. Special mention for the authentic indian drinks - personally, tried the panagam and loved it. They should try to fuse modern tastes in the drinks.

A small little place, this south Indian joint is quite the experience. Food here does not taste like the usual south indian fare u get in Bombay. The idli-dosa taste quite different and would recommend you try this only if u willing to experiment. Dont think this is the type of place that would get a "WOW" from everyobe. Personally I would want to go back for Lunch just to experience the thali. We need more of just small places that give us something different rather than just the standard fare..

Searching for good South Indian joint in South Mumbai landed up at this place. Found it a bit difficult to reach given the maps on Zomato was not updated properly but the lady at the counter was helpful to assist on the phone.

Being a vegetarian foodie and one who loves South Indian food I was not disappointed visiting this outlet. So surely say the taste was authentic what they claim, may be tweaked to some extent.

We started by ordering the Bisi Bela Bath the taste was bang on. The Flavors and the fragrance for the spices were coming out so well that the curiosity to try more items was high.

The next in line was the Mini Thanjavur Tiffin and Mini Thanjavur Meal. Both the meals covered almost all possible Flavors that this joint has to offer. Be it the Idli, Dosa, bada, sambhar, rasam, variety of chutneys, chapati, vegetable, sweet and so on.

All the dishes were mouth watering and delicious only Cavit being the idli and vada seemed to have been pre cooked well in advance and heated and given. The same was a bit of a let down as it was looking a bit out of proportion and not heated well given rest all items were good.

The best dish for me was the papad and I am sure once you eat these authentic South Indian papad you will not be able to stop.

The place is a small joint which can accommodate close to 24 ppl. The service is good and the owner herself seems to take keen interest in what is being served to the guest.

Overall a good dining experience and I am surely going to be visiting them again soon.

Even the restaurant was beautifully decorated as it was a dining hall of some house.

It's just a 24 cover restaurant with nice ambience and music ...best part is it's very homely...and dishes are fairly priced...must visit place...

Tanjore By Angie is a quaint name which inexplicably got me curious about the food and so I made time to get there for lunch. Not far away from Kailash Parbat at Colaba, TBA is a cozy yet comfortable place which accommodates about 6 tables. Along with charming woody interiors and a pastiche of picture frames from the south; the light instrumental Carnatic music in the background adds another gossamer of authenticity to the ambiance.
I called for the Molgapudi idly, the Mini Thanjavur Tiffin and the Thanjavur Kaapi. The Thanjavur Tiffin was a meal by itself (2 vadas, 2 idlis, three quarters of dosa, upma and kesar sheera) along with sambar (a bit too fluid yet well balanced and flavourful) and a bevy of chutneys; green chutney (out of place), coconut chutney (ok) and a red chutney (ok). The wadas were crisp, the idly was pearly white and softish, the dosa was velvety (not too crusty) and the kesar sheera was a bit under par. The Molgapudi Idli plate had three large idlis coated with sufficient mongapudi paste (molgapudi powder mixed with til oil). The coffee was good and I felt quiet compelled to go for a second helping.

The food is honest, made in good oil and does not give you any heart burn even if you overeat (of which I am often guilty). The service here is prompt, polite and impeccable.

The right-hand-side of the menu card may seem a tad heavy (for delicious yet humble & ubiquitous South Indian dishes ) but then again if you consider the extortionate rents in Colaba on one hand and patrons who compute in dollars on the other – nothing seems out of place.

My entire family is vegetarian, so from time to time it's always nice to find a hipster take on something, I have been eating since I was a kid. I say 'hipster' because this was a completely different take on how you assume places which serve South Indian food to be. We ordered literally every type of thing, they had on the menu, minus the desserts, everything was amazing and the portions were decent. They serve a drink which has coconut water, with lemon mixed with some honey, that was something everybody on my table had to repeat because it was that amazing.

The place did a wonderful job of serving and explaining you what exactly were you ordering and their recommendations just worked well.

It seemed way better and more tastier than other places which claim to serve authentic South Indian food.

Something definitely worth trying if you're anywhere near Colaba.

The moment you enter Tanjore, the first thing that hits you is the beautiful Tanjore painting on the wall, soothing carnatic music and calming fragrance. Another noticeable aspect are the artifacts on the tables. Ordered for Podi Idli, Thanjavur meals and filter coffee. The Podi Idli is absolutely lip smacking. The idlis are soft and fluffy. The Podi smeared on the Idli is authentic. It is hot and spicy, the way Mulaga Podi is supposed to be. The sambar is without any sweetness. They serve three chutneys coconut, Tomato & Onion and Mint. Very tasty. The Thanjavur meal had Puris, avial, More Kozhambu, potato sabzi, rasam, sambar, Appalam and sweet. The avial and the more kozhambu had a tinge of coconut oil in them. The rasam, sambar and more kozhambu were good. The avial could have been better. The filter coffee could be better. It has to be served hot and piping. The people who were setving were pleasant, amiable with a smile on their face. The flipsides would be that the number of tables were quite less and I believe on a holiday the waiting would be quite long. Also it is heavy on the wallet. A must visit for South indian food lovers.

I always end up ordering the dosa opposite Mithibai which has the words schezwan and cheese in the same line. I like fusion food and I love cheese.

I rarely eat authentic South India food, but when I do......I do like it!! I went to Tanjore on a friend's recommendation. It's a cosy little place in Colaba market.

Service was great. Polite and with a smile

Ambiance is good. Comfortable seating.

I was alone so I didn't get a chance to try out multiple dishes. I ordered the mysore masala dosa and that was tasty. Loved the three types of chutney that came with it.

The pricing is on a higher side if you were to compare it with a typical Udupi restaurant.....but that doesn't make it expensive either. It's still reasonable and you get added benefits like hygienic food, polite staff, and good ambiance (All of which I doubt you've experienced in an Udupi).

I'd definitely visit again if I'm in the area.

Deep into the island city of Mumbai almost protected by the Indian Navy and dotted by the Paris community of Cusrow Baug and the Afghan Church, Electric House and Fire Brigade being notable landmarks of what defined Mumbai earlier is a place that we popularly know as Colaba. The Shahid Bhagat Singh road that winds down from Regal to the Afghan Church area is filled aplenty with a lot of eateries some of them legendary, some of them appealing evergreen, some past their prime and some new ones that have come up.

Tanjore by Angie is the new kid on the block situated next to Colaba Fire Station. Boasting of some authentic Tanjore.... rather Thanjavur cuisine this place was both an excitement for us to try some home food (my wife comes from Thanjavur) as well as set the barometer on their food vs my mom in laws cooking. So we went there with no expectations honestly lest we should be let down by something substandard.

Fast forward to us coming out of the restaurant we were thoroughly satisfied and had a warm smile on our face something that usually presents itself when you eat food cooked by your mamis and grandmothers. That to me is a tribute to the cooking and the kitchen that repeatedly gave us some really authentic tasting dishes on our visit here today. Mind you it takes guts to open a pure veg south Indian restaurant right ahead of Cusrow Baug and near Afghan Church. But for now this place delivers. Yes its expensive that Madras Cafe and the Shree Ganesh along the way but that is the price you will pay for what you get to eat.

To start with I ordered the adai avial. My wife chose the Nai Rice with Paruppu Podi while my son had the curd rice. My adai was tasting authentic and hit the taste right but I would have liked it a little more roasted. The adai we had was a little undercooked for our liking. The avial though was one of the most authentic that I have tasted in Mumbai. No complaints with the curd rice either. The mor kozhambu gravy served with the ghee rice was very ordinary and did not do justice to the dish.

We then had the semiya upma while my wife chose to have the semiya payasam for dessert. This is roasted vermicelli done two ways....one a salty and savoury snack while the other a sinful dessert. Really hit the taste notes with the well done semiya with the crunchy carrots and cashews flavored and spiced with black pepper. The green chutney served on this dish is really not required instead some avial or sambhar may really go well here.

The semiya payasam was sweet....not too sweet and tasted so well that we were able to finish the dish without having that churn in our stomach due to excessive sweetness. I would have liked a cardamom flavor topping on the payasam though.....

Finally the Thanjavur Filter Coffee was the grand finale of our experience here today. So authentic, thick rich peaberry flavor that i was reminded of the coffee that my grandmom used to make for us when we visited Palakkad in the summers.

Also notable is their vasantha neer which is an authentic concoction of honey, coconut water and tulsi...something everyone should try.

Bright ambience, cozy seating, soft carnatic flute overtures playing in the background and some homely flavorful dishes to eat....you can't ask for more from an authentic south Indian eatery. Truly surprising that we discovered this is Colaba.

Tanjore by Angie....take a bow!

We spent a lazy sunday afternoon at Tanjore, a quaint looking elegantly done up place serving authentic south Indian food straight from thanjavur. It struck the right chords with my tam bram family with their crispy vadai, mysore dosai, fiery sambhar, sharp tasting chutneys, the very calming vasantha neer (so glad I had it), butter milk and off course the kaapi. Definitely going to go back to try their mini meals and payasam (which I couldnt try as I was completely satiated!) All in all.. A must try
