Crunch in the munch and sluurrrrpp of the drinks, these are the 2 of our favourite things!
Are you a fan of spring rolls as much as we are?Â
If you are, one of the nicest places in town to enjoy that would be:Â Kurries and Burries - Cafe Mex Asian!
A small, cute little place, very close to Chowpatty Beach is one of the veggie friendly and value for money kind of places. A place that is super efficient when it comes to home deliveries as well. Interiors and decor wise, it is an ordinary looking place, very small with simple, basic interiors and generally flooded with college going students of the surrounding area. And why wouldn't it be flooded with them? This place offers great food with very good quantities at very budget friendly prices.
Recently, we were invited to celebrate their "SPRING AND DRINKS FESTIVAL" (which is over by now, but a great place to try out food in general). This was essentially a food festival at Kurries and Burries to enjoy and hero a particular type of food. In this case it was - Spring Rolls. For all us spring roll lovers, they had an entire display of about 7 varieties of spring rolls (that could be ordered individually as dishes or collectively as a king sized platter, almost impossible to finish!) accompanied by a plethora of cool, fizzy drinks that went very well with the idea of the hot spring rolls!
Spring Roll Platter:
This platter consisted of all the varieties for spring rolls that they had to offer. Along with that, they served 5 bowls of chutneys and sauces that included green chutney, schezuan sauce, cheesy dips and mayonnaise dips. The spring roll outer covering was crisp and crunchy, it was not crusty or crumbly which is a very good thing! Because it is quite distasteful when the crust crumbles and you don't manage to get a wholesome bite of the filling and crust in unison!Â
But that did not happen here! The spring roll platter in anti - clockwise direction (from bottom left)
1. Potato and Cheese Roll
This spring roll consisted of a mashed potato and cheese filling, with a subtle pepper-ey and herb-ey flavour. The cheesiness was quite enjoyable but it got a little bit bland, with not enough seasoning.
2. Mexican Roll
A rather normal kind of mexican filling in the spring rolls, nothing too exciting and extraordinary about this one. It was flavourful but we were not too happy with this one.
3. Kung Pao Potato Roll
The kung pao potato here is absolutely fabulous and one of their hot favourites as a dish! So when that same dish is wrapped up in their crispy, spring roll crust, who wouldn't love it! The flavours were absolutely bang on - one of the favorite spring rolls of the platter undoubtedly.
4. Paneer Kathi Roll
It is extremely easy for someone who likes Paneer to instantly appreciate the goodness of this spring roll. This, slightly Indianised spring roll was a very welcome option on the plate. Packed with flavour and spices, with the chutneys at the side, this made for a super delicious bite.
5. Stir Fried Veggies Roll
Adding and replacing Chinese with Chinese - moving slightly away from the regular noodle filling of spring rolls, when you replace it with something similar of the same cuisine, the chances of that combination going wrong are very bleak. The stir fried veggies spring roll was somewhere between a hit and a miss. It was good, but not great.
6. Paneer Tikka Roll
Again, another Paneer favorite. What makes this different from the Kathi Roll apart from the obvious flavours, was the quantity. The quantity of Paneer in this one was much more compared to the Veggies. Whereas in the Kathi roll it was a 1:1 mix of both. The flavours in this one are also slightly Indianised, but super yummy!
Paneer lovers, definitely give one of these two a go!
7. Italian Roll
When I was told Italian, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I knew it would be a pasta and it was - a Penne sauce spaghetti filling within the spring rolls. It was quite and interesting attempt, but I didn't quite like the two together. This could easily be a miss if you are ordering individually.
Apart from the Spring and Drink Menu, we took to ordering some of their regular dishes. These were the ones we tried:
Kung Pao Potato:
Ordering this dish was a no brainer! The much famed dish, definitely lived up to its expectations. Easily one of the nicest Kung Pao Potatoes we have had. Our only complaint with the dish was the size of the potato pieces - they were slightly big and chunky! Apart from that, flavour wise, this dish killed it. Must order!
Taquitos:
An in house speciality, it didn't take us any time to decide that we wanted to eat this! (PS: This dish looks absolutely gorgeous). Small, cone shaped tortillas filled with a yummy mexican filling, generously coated with mexican sauces at the top. This dish was delicious and super fun to eat! Also a must try, because it will leave you wanting more and more!
I think we ended up ordering most of the drinks on their festival menu, well 4 out of 5! A good thing about all of these drinks, atleast the ones with soda was the amount of fizz. There is a fine line between fizz-less, too much fizz and just the right balance. These ones had just the right quantity of fizz - enough to awaken and shake you up from the inside, but not so much that it would badly hit your head and nose!
Jal Jeera:
Who doesn't love Jal Jeera? I guess that pretty much says it all. But hey, if you're not a fan. do not order this. Because its full on packed with masala and jal jeera.
Pep Mojito:
One of my least favorite drinks, this Pep Mojito tasted almost like spearmint toothpaste to me in a liquified form. Contrary to my opinion, others quite liked the drink - liked it, did not love it. So I guess this drink becomes subject for argument and that you must order it and decide for yourself if you like it or not! Don't go by our opinion on this one - its kind of mixed.
Ice Cream Berry:
This drink was hands down, the winner of the day! It not only looked great, it tasted amazing. The sweet flavours of berries, beautifully blended together with the flavours of a good vanilla ice cream. You should totally go for this one! Every mouthful of this drink was a delight.
Masala Orange Soda:
If you like a zesty, orange-ey flavour in your drink, you will definitely like this. Plus the additional chaat like masala just makes it all come together, giving you a very enjoyable drink. For me, it was more like a, liking it more with every sip kind of drink.
Coming to the close...Â
There is no other way the people at Kurries and Burries could leave you happier!
PEP STICKS!!! These were also called Pepsi Cola and were a rage, back in the day during the good old school times! These guys call them Pep Sticks - They have these in 6 different flavours that they make themselves, which is why they are much larger in size. But who's complaining! The flavours that they have are:
Mojito, Strawberry, Orange Masala, Jal Jeera, Lemon Ice Tea and Blue Sky.
I do hope that these Pep Sticks are a permanent addition to their menu!
YOU WILL LOVE THESE!Â
Definitely the highlight of the meal, these Pep Sticks are going to leave you feeling super happy - You're going to feel child like again!
Food - 3.5/5
Drinks - 3/5
Service - 4/5
Ambience - 2/5
Pep Sticks - 5/5
You have to try this place - they have a hoard of variety on their menu, plus off and on festive add on menus! You have good food, good drinks, okay-ish music and ambiance, but great service to cover up for it. And all this at a very good price! You can eat to your hearts content, at the restaurant or in the comfort of your own house (great delivery service) without burning a hole in your pocket. Don't think you would want to ask for too much more!
Kurries and Burries would definitely not disappoint! Recommended :)
