I would like to start by calling this place a 'Hidden Gem'. Located just before the Prabhadevi station bridge, this is a typical parsi restaurant. The restaurant area has a limited set of tables and chairs. Does not usually house a large number of people. Known for its kheema paav, it is truly a delight. Soft and tender kheema, dark red gravy and soft paav makes it a perfect combination. Overall a 4/5. -1 for the ambience as it could be lit better

This place has amazing food of great quality, their keema pav and bun muska are amazingly yum, also their biryani which is only available on Fridays. The galla wala's are so friendly and polite and they also have Irani sweets. I recently purchased the sohan and bakhlvlava.... These two Irani sweets were my favorite.

If you’re looking for a proper Irani restaurant.. you’ve found it.
This is one of the old timers doing brisk business which is at times managed by the owners 2 daughters.
A single kadak omelette with their kheema is to die for, the taste of which still takes me back to my school days.

Stumbled in to this simple and quaint cafe after seeing this places listed as one of the most top Irani cafe’s in Mumbai. And considering it was so close to my house, I had to try it out. It’s a small but lively places bustling with people always. It sells the best MUTTON KHEEMA EVER! Other dishes are nice too, having the most authentic taste! It has definitely become by regular places for lunch/dinner/breakfast.

Had been here for the first time super best pocket friendly prices. Tried regular kheema, kheema gotala and kheema fry. I personally liked regular kheema and bread. Tried omlet bread which was also good. Don't ask for special tea as there is only regular tea available.

Visited this cafe for breakfast. The kheema pav and brune maska is hands down the most authentic I've ever tasted.

Perfect place for travelling back in time. The ambiance is very friendly and has this nostalgic feel. It hasn't changed much since my dad's college days when he used to frequent the place.

This is a small Iranian cafe nearby Tilak bridge. It is run by two women apparently (my friend informed). One of them was at the counter.

It may look a bit dingy. But, once you settle down, you tend to ignore that. Also, there's this feeling of being transported back in time, associated with such cafes.

I was here with a friend for a quick bite. So, my order was chocolate bun followed by a Suleimani chai. My friend ordered a Chicken Puff. He also opted for the said chai.

Chocolate Bun is basically chocolate sauce splattered inside 2 buns. It was fine. The puff was tasty. And the Suleimani chai is a good beverage to wash down bread and puff. It was good.

Service is quick. Prices are reasonable.

Good place for a quick snack!

Nice Irani restraunt at the end corner of Tilak bridge @ Dadar East. This is one of the few Irani restraunts which are left in Mumbai. My go to place when I crave for kheema pav, burjee pav or bun maska😋. The taste of this restraunt is really good. A nice place to have breakfast and Irani chai with malai on it😍.They also have some items for lunch also like Dal gosht and mutton biryani etc. A must visit restaurant if you are nearby Dadar station area.

This place is tucked in a corner, as you get down Tilak Bridge and turn left to Dadar Hindu Colony. It's a typical Irani joint - old world charm, quintessential furniture, minimal service and a conventional Irani owner at the counter (he's taken a back seat these days, and his more than capable daughters run the place).

The food is good though. Non vegetarians please try their kheema pav - not the best in the world, but spicy and wonderful nevertheless. The quantity is sufficient and the quality is arguable, but overall a must visit place for Irani food lovers. Be warned that the place is a bit dingy, and rubbing shoulders with people at the table next to you is the norm, but worth a visit. Chatting with the owner (the old man and his daughters) is another plus.

For feel of old school Parsi cafe with rickety tables and a friendly Parsi Uncle behind the counter. The typical bun maska and Irani chai is a perfect delight and the unavailability of Friday specials beyond half an hour is a testament to their taste.

"CAFE COLONY"..I have always addressed this place as "dadar waley uncle ka cafe" until today I wanted to review this place.I wasnt even sure if this place exists in Zomato or not.
I consider this place No.1 for KHEEMA PAW in entire Mumbai. There are many parsi/ irani joints serving kheema paw and they are good, but this place beats them all and the reason is that the owners do not compromise with the quality.Their motto is not to expand the business but to feed their customers quality and tasty food which they have been doing for years.
Other must try items:
1)For breakfast/brunch/small eats:Kheema ghotala, bhurji paw, omelette, bun maska and Irani chai.
2) Lunch/Dinner/Big eats:Mutton Biriyani, Chicken Biriyani (only on Fridays) ,Daal ghosht, chicken curry rice.
Their chicken curry rice tastes like homemade one.All the food is made using their own masala and thats why even if you eat the food everyday it wont cause any problem healthwise.
If you are looking for good ambience and decor then this is not the place for you, but if you are fond of parsi/irani delicacies( home cooked style) then this place is a must try!
HAPPY EATING😊

Do you wish to travel back in time or wish for good old days.head for this place. Feels like clock is stuck some 20 yrs back. So is the case with most of Irani joints, that's der charm n usp.
So we went for some lazy breakfast.were little late so missed my favourite brun maska.
We had ordered for a aamlet( u don't get an omlett here) pav .and some bun maska.
Then called for some burji pav. The look waiter have us spoke loud and clear kitna khaoge. To make it worst we called for rusk n khari.
To his surprise we washed it all down with couple of cups of Irani chai.
Food was good. If you are used taking more salt in food.you may be disappointed slightly. Overall a good experience.

Sleepy little corner in Dadar is where you find this place. Getting parking here is  painful, however that gets compensated with the lovely chai & bun maska.. we went here for early breakfast. however it felt like we ate an horse when w left from here :P  we had lots of stuff... to name a few - their bun maska, chai, khari & toast, with bhurjee pav & triple omelette.
YOU just cannot have one tea here , you would end up having another cup, its that addictive.

Having stayed in Dadar always saw this place but never felt like going in, today based on fellow reviewers decided to try this place for breakfast. Ordered the kheema pav with sunny side up and it was pretty decent. I don't have to travel to Koolar and co or Gulshan at Poddar for for my binge of Irani food. They also serve other items like paya and dal ghost, will try for sure, maybe for lunch today :) This place is not for ambience, it is a typical Irani restaurant and serves the purpose. Happy eating...

I frequent this place sometimes. It is a typical Irani restaurant. I like to have egg ommlete here.

It is a non veg restaurant. On certain days it offers special dishes. The Biryani which they prepare on Friday is awesome.  We asked for half biryani and then looking at the quantity wondered whether the waiter served us a full one. But to our surprise he hadn't made any mistake. It was indeed a half one. Do visit this place for the Biryani.

Note : Visit early by around 12 itself as the quantity prepared is limited and gets consumed quickly.

After having a nice refreshing walk in the world sea face , one can only ask for some garam garam nashta!!! And so we went to try out this cafe. Is has got the Irani charm, but it feels quite congested in here. The place is not very clean and hygenic , that's what I personally felt. We orderd a bun maska pav and a kadak bun maska pav. They were too good, soft and freshly baked, the kadak maska pav was very crispy and the amount of butter was just perfect!! Then I ordered a panner bhurji and egg pulav. The pulav came in first, and it looked quite appealing. It had great taste too, but the quantity of egg was quite less and thus in some bites you could make out the taste of egg in it, but majority of them tasted just plain veg. Pulav. The Panner bhurji was DELICIOUS!!! On the first bite it tasted real horrible, but I understood that there was no salt in it actually, so after sprinkling a pinch of salt and some lemon it tasted perfect. The panner was quite soft and it got along very well with the soft buns!!!
The egg pulav could have been really soo much better if the egg content was good enough, or else I think it should be avoided. Panner bhurji was anytime worth it. And a person is just totally useless if he goes to a Irani cafe and doesn't try out the Bun Maska pav!!!!
It has a looot of non veg options, and the only Veg things they offer is paneer bhurji and plain dal rice!! I think you must add on a few of the items in he vegetrain section, but the place us a real treat for non- veggies!!! This place us real good to go and next time in really gonna go for the Kheema pav!!!

Easy to locate and easy to order (Iranian joint so a no brainer), however, with chicken curry in the menu I expected tandoori roti to be served along but was surprised when I was (gently) repudiated with a "no roti only bun". Thus, chicken curry and mutton kheema ghotala were served alongside bun and delectitious it was especially the kheema which seemed the perfect blend of all that was there (which I don't frankly have an idea of). Tried capping it by a 'chai' but it was not as good as I would have expected to (although many people come there just for the 'chai'). So, all in all, definitely worth going for the kheema or if you want to taste in the slowly dying Iranian cafe culture in Mumbai

Lovely little corner restaurant like most Irani cafes in Mumbai city run by the old Irani owner along with his daughter who happened to be there when we visited and talked about the food and travels to Iran as well. Fantastic value for money dishes like Kheema Ghotala (minced meat with scrambled eggs) and the legendary bun maska with butter oozing out from the edges. They serve different mutton and chicken dishes on all days so it's something new every day of the week. They also serve the popular from olden times Roger's aerated drinks like Ginger, Ginger-Lemon, Jeera Masala, Raspberry and Ice Cream Soda.

Tried their mutton kheema and double omlette.

The kheema is very soft and succulent while the omlette was super fresh and fluffy. Great taste in both dishes. I'm sure their other items such as the Mutton biryani and kheema pulao would be fantastic as well.

Very very nice. Decent and most of all not a filthy looking place to put you off.

Nice and friendly staff and very attentive (don't know if they were super friendly just because it was the afternoon and not that many ppl around), but all in all a very nice place to eat comfortably.

Read a detailed review and view many more photos on my blog post here:
http://sliceoffme.wordpress.com/2013/09/11/irani-cafe-colony-an-interview-with-the-owner-agha/
Interview with Mr. Agha and his two daughters – owners - Cafe Colony – Hindu Colony,Dadar,Bombay.

Manjiri :

Ever since I moved back to Bombay after a few years in Pune and with Cafe Colony within walking distance, I wanted to meet Agha and have a heart to heart chat with him. I soon became a regular customer as well as established a friendly rapport with him and his daughters that calling this piece an interview is not apt. It’s just snippets of a long conversation over several cups of Irani Chai and several evenings. But it was only after I had moved to London and then on one of my unplanned visits to India that I got an opportunity to really get talking with Agha’s daughters, Agha himself was too busy but did let me come and click a dozen pictures, he never lets anyone do that so I guess my skills of persuasion worked! In fact there was so much more to catch up on even after my conversations with Aghas daughters, that I let Mrinal (who blogs at Retro-Reflections) catch up with Agha after I came back to London after my visit to Bombay this May. I am so glad she managed to get him talking!

My earliest memories associated with Irani cafes are of eating giant omelettes with soft buns slathered in butter with my father at a now nonexistent Irani cafe opposite Dadar Station. This happened a few years in succession as we waited for my grandmothers train to arrive at the station, invariably delayed we confidently sat down to have breakfast at this quaint cafe instead of sweating it out on the platform. This Irani cafe no longer exists and has long been replaced by an Udipi joint. The typical wooden chairs, the glass-topped wooden tables with a simple plastic ‘’tablecloth’’ and the trademark maska-pav dripping in butter was great fun to eat and I also got to feel all grown up and important by having a cup of tea to myself instead of the daily glass of milk!

Aghas daughters are shy by nature and very simple too but standing behind that counter and ‘’manning’’ the post has taught them a lot. After being cheated and fleeced silly by a manager who they had for a short while, the girls decided to take over when Agha needed a break. The elder one started coming to the shop when she was 18 and her brother when he was even younger . Soon they learnt the ropes of the working of the cafe. Mind you managing a shop in a city like Bombay is no mean feat. No one would know that better than me, after managing 9 supermarkets in Pune including lauching them. I got to see a bit of live ‘’action’’ when during my visit to Bombay in November’13 all shops were forcibly made to shutter down due to some political tension in the city and the girls very ably managed to safely shut shop and get themselves home. Believe it takes some major spunk to do this sort of stuff.I had to ask them if any other Irani cafes they know are now ‘’manned ‘’ by the women in the family , I was so happy to hear their reply, ”Light of Bharat” Irani cafe is at times managed by a lady and Crown Bakery has the Irani Parsi girls managing the show.My thoughts are interrupted by a customer who come to buy a few eggs and another person seeking change for a large amount is politely but firmly turned away ,atta girls!

”The Agha girls” as I shall call them here because I choose not to name them, I could but as they very kindly told me a few reasons why they wouldn’t want to be photographed , I genuinely think it’s a mark of respect to not use their names here either – they later changed their mind after ma in law convinced them that they should be PROUD that they stand alongside the men in the family their father Agha and brother Mirza and help run the cafe so efficiently, so the photos you will see in this post are old photographs they have kindly agreed to share with aai and me.

It seemed apt to munch on some mawa cake and down it with tea at this juncture, always a good way to keep the conversation going.

Moving to Surat in India one of the reasons for migration was the growing discomfort between Irani Muslims and Irani Parsis they tell me.The elder of the two sisters started helping out her father at the shop when she was 18. Labour issues, staff theft and skyrocketing taxes, the girls have seen a lot.The LBT strike are happening on and off in India during this period (April 2013) and sugar and dal stocks are badly affected. Imagine an irani cafe that can’t serve tea they say …shudder shudder…

Someone has ordered a plate of dal rice, the common mans daily meal in India and supremely satisfying as a comfort food.

Sitting inside this decades old Parsi place and watching the city pass by is an old addiction of the regulars here.. For the others Cafe Colony is a place to come and stock up on eggs, kadak pao and bread.. For some, visit is to only pick up the chicken/mutton puffs and Pattice or the Mawa cakes stored in glass bottle jars..Cafe colony also has a smallish kitchen which dishes up Kheema all day long.. Mutton Kheema , Kheema ghotala, fried Kheema.. small portion with pao .. Quite good.. Fridays are Biryani days available only for a couple of hours in the afternoon.. I have not had the opportunity of having the Biryani here yet..Brun maska is very crunchy and dipping in the pani kum chai and eating it is something that should be done to get the real flavour of eating inside any Parsi outlet.. So long till my next visit...

In a city where iconic Irani/Parsi joints are slowly downing shutters for good, it's SO important to keep the tradition alive and going wherever possible. In fact, I was surprised to find that Cafe Colony wasn't listed on Zomato or similar sites, had to request them to feature it. It is an extremely simple and small Irani place located at the the end of Tilak bridge (Dadar TT end of the bridge). Don't be surprised if you are asked to share a table with complete strangers/bus conductors/college kids/regulars during lunch hours. The menu is concise and certain dishes are available only on certain days (Bawa thing I guess). I went on a Friday because biryani is available on Friday. The old gentleman who manages the place is a super friendly Parsi grandpa figure. He hovered around us like a mother hen, making sure we were well fed and happy. Come in before 1 pm if you want mutton biryani as they run out very quickly. Most dishes are available in 'Half' or 'Full' portion sizes, which works well for a lone visitor.
Our lunch order was Kheema fry, Mutton biryani and Dal Ghosht. The kheema (Rs 100) looked incredible when it arrived, however, it was over-spiced and hence the taste of the meat was completely lost. All my table companions felt the same..too much garam masala. It's possible that my taste buds are used to kheema from other establishments and maybe that's why I din't like this version- so feel free to try it out and then form an opinion. The biryani was not bad. At Rs 110 for a half plate,it fed three of us. The mutton quality is very good and they cook it till it just falls apart. My only grouse again is that it could do with a little less masala. BUT the reason I am writing this review (given that I din't enjoy the kheema and biryani)- is only and only for the Dal Ghosht. Superlative to say the least. The meat disintegrates between your fingers. The dal is so tasty, so balanced in terms of flavour of the spices as well as the meat, that it made me want to put this place on a map. Forget the rest, even if you go here for this simple almost peasant like dish,it's worth the effort. Mop it up with pao or chappati and I promise you will come back for this one single dish. Priced at Rs 85, it is a plate full of honest cooking. The menu also features other usual Irani suspects like omlette, bhurji, kheema gotala, paya, chicken curry etc.
I would like to end with a mention of SOSYO. I used to drink Sosyo years ago when I was in school, discontinued back then and now back in production! A local version of Cola that kinda tastes like Old Monk + Coke but without the alcohol. I swear! And the bottle says - Apna desh Apna drink! Try it here ;)
Parting secret- Shhh...just across Cafe Colony is a Parsi Dairy. Go in and buy their signature caramel toffee. Stick jaw variety with the most luscious buttery caramel-ly taste...

I you want visit a old world Irani hotel at Dadar, this is the place to go. It still maintains the vintage charm with chequered floor and carved wooden chairs and table. The menu includes typical Irani items like bread pudding and custard dishes follows by Irani tea straight from a copper boiler Should not miss this place

Absolutely our family favorite Irani Cafe and a must visit on our to do list whenever we are visiting Mumbai from USA. Love love love the Kheem pav, omelette pav, and the French toast bread. The chai is just out of the world and love to pair it with bun maska and Khari. In the USA we don’t have Irani cafes nor the food so we really miss it when we are back. We Always get excited when we plan to come to Mumbai as we know we will def visit this cafe and eat all tue delicious food. Highly recommend 😊😊

One of the oldest Irani places in Mumbai and still serves one of the best Bun maska and chai. The place is usually crowded no matter what time you visit this. Taste and quality has been consistent and good. Taste is awesome. Overall environment is energetic. All type of crowd gather here. Staff is polite and helpful. The journey is incomplete without having a chai and bun maska. Hands down the best place to eat Keema pav & Bun Maska. For a non vegetarian, this cafe is a paradise, offering countless delicious options to choose from. Chicken and Mutton Biryani is served only on Friday and that's too during lunch and dinner hours. Good food at reasonable prices. Go ahead for traditional Mutton keeema, Omelette and Cutlets. Great place to visit. This place is already very famous worth the hype i feel. And would like to visit again and again to try out different dishes

The food is Okish. If you are the one who is trying Irani Cuisine for 1st time than the taste would be great.💯 But if you have tried alot of Irani Cafes, than definitely you can feel the difference. The old rustic look of Cafe is very good.❤️ Kheema Pav and Chicken Cuttlets are best. Also try Caramel Custard it's best❤️

I visited this irani cafe for the first time & experience was quite blissful. It's a cozy, vintage Iranian cafe. The food - chai, bun-muska, Egg Burji, Chiken Puff, Irani Kebab, Chicken Keema , Pudding etc was all really tasty and affordable too. Overall a satisfying experience and a must try for others. Lady owner is Very Friendly n Polite. Do visit if you haven't yet..

I was in search of an authentic Irani restaurant in Mumbai for a long time and I surfed south mumbai for that but all south mumbai Irani restaurants are now converted to firangi restaurants and bars. Finally I found this in Dadar and it's awesome.

You get the yesteryear 70s feel as you enter and then you calmly settle down in the wooden chairs placing your arms on the wooden tables thinking those were the times! Personal favorites include Chicken Biryani which is available on select Fridays, because mostly people prefer Mutton Biryani. But Chicken Biryani and Mutton Biryani are like Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan, one can't choose between the two! Rest assured, there is no item at this place which you will not relish, the Nazariyan family has been spreading love through Iranian cuisine since ages...and they know their customers, they'll not forget you even if you visit after a long time! Best desert would be the Irani Pudding, have it fresh hot or at room temperature, the taste still remains mesmerizing 😍 7 Stars to Cafe Colony ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ...and ask to be added to their WhatsApp group for regular updates!

Delicious mutton kheema par adu with pav. Raspberry pallonji that reminds of childhood cough syrup and a good hearted owner. The gaza (traditional Irani sweet made of camel milk) is very sticky textured like a chewing gum.

Good food, good Ambience feels like you have travelled back in time because of the unique old time furniture. I tried Bun maska pav, bheja fry, malai sugar, chai, mava cake it's really good must try items...kheema masala was ok i felt like the masala was too strong and oily which can be improvised..Rest all items were good 👍 if you wanna try Irani food then must visit this place. Overall good experience the owners were also very friendly and welcoming 👍😊 thumbsup
