A Malabar speciality restaurant with the classic interiors located near to hutatma chowk. It offers variety of Malabar cuisine and other varieties at very affordable prices in Sobo. The ambience is superb and the staff is helpful and polite enough.

In frame - chicken nadan curry with malabar parotta, chicken lollypop and iddyapam with tomato saar.

1) chicken nadan curry with malabar parotta- (3.5/5) The curry was thick and had a very typical south indian gravy taste with coconut paste and curry leaves tadka to it with spices ofcourse. Moderately spiced. Tried the malabar parotta for the first time was a fulfilling experience as the size of parotta is enough for a person

2) Chicken lollypop -( 3.5/5) This was similar to what we get in other restaurant nothing extraordinary, fried crisp but what I loved was the Schezwan sauce with it. Spicy red with right amount of oil and taste of garlic.

3) iddyapam with tomato saar (4/5) This is again a special Kerala dish so naturally they have mastered it. Sort of rice noodles (steamed) and also a substitute for rice, combine it with the tomato saar ( tomato curry) given with it.

4) payasam -(4/5) this sweet dish was given complimentary to us with our meal. Also there is a special sweet dish everyday and if lucky u may get it complimentary as well.

Overall rating - 4/5

Final verdict, I would suggest to try their Malabar cuisine as they have mastered it and would give you a fulfilling experience ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป all in all a good experience and a suggestion to increase the quantity in the plates ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿปโœจ

So this particular day I was yearning for some authentic, no B. S. Kerala cuisine. After lot of Google-ing, I came across Taste of Malabar. And off I went to satisfy my craving. So as it turns out, this is actually a No BS place. It's decent in its ambience. Not too fancy, but very clean and welcoming. The menu card had all the proper malabari sounding dishes. Some which I could not even pronounce properly.
We ordered
1- Kappa biryani
2- Chicken Malabari Biryani
3- Surmai fry, the malabar style
4- Chicken Nadan Curry
Here is my take on it, the food tasted amazing. The biryani was awesome, I could not stop praising it enough.
The chicken curry was something very different and I loved it.
The fish fry was average, I mean not bad but nothing out of the ordinary as such.
Overall it was a nice experience, and worth the time I spent on trying to find the place.
So I was happy and my tummy was happy.
Paisa vasool.
P. S. Was too busy eating, so dint take any pictures.

Hidden in the lanes of Fort, Taste of Malabar is a restaurant serving amazing Malabari cuisine. I discovered this place while walking towards CST from Fort and was pulled in immediately.

Even though the place is situated in Mumbai, there is a South Indian feel in the ambience. The place is well kept, simple and clean. The Kota flooring maintains the modesty of the place. The walls are half tiled and half wallpaperd. Wall behind the counter holds a sunset at the sea secenery, with coconut trees and birds flying back home.

The waiters quickly acknowledge the customers and drinking water is served, the menu card is given.

Without looking much into the menu, I enquired about the food to a waiter and ordered a Chicken Masala Fry, Malabari Paratha and Chicken Biryani. Salad was served and the food came quickly.

The Chicken Masala Fry was amazing. Cooked in mild spices with coconut, dry red chillies and curry leaves, the whole dish was finger licking good and tasted amazing with the Parathas.

The Chicken Biryani had a homely taste. Cooked with small grained rice, and a very tasty mix of chicken, onions, tomatoes and spices. The meal ended with some complimentary Sevaiyan Payasam.

Special mention for the hygiene and super polite staff.

Turnoff:

Even though the restaurant has ACs, they didn't switch it on just because there were few customers.

Landed at this place, while hunting for authentic Kerala food in the Fort area. Went in basis good reviews and honestly very happy to have discovered this tiny little gem!
Ambience : you are transported directly to an upcountry restaurant experience when you find a seat in this eatery, everything about the decor reminds me of a stop at any highway local restaurant during road trips in Kerala.
Food : we ordered a few favorites, Idiyappam with veg stew, Puttu with kadala curry and Kappa to go as accompaniment. Serving puttu with kadala is a given, but pleasantly surprised when they served pappadams with this. That's truly authentic (missed steamed banana, that would have made this 100% homely). Tastewise, everything ticked well, except the kappa was a bit bland and lacked softness (could have cooked it a bit more)
Service : is relaxed and friendly, this means it's not a place where you rush into and expect food to appear within minutes
Pricing : very pocket friendly
What else : near the counter, they have an array of authentic Kerala items, tapioca and jackfruit chips in particular, if you are interested. Tried them, they are good. There's also virgin coconut oil and baby mango picked in brine and chillies.
Will I go again : YESS...

Satisfied customer!
I recommend this place for sure!
Please try it once if you are a non veg fan and of you would like to try new new dishes.
They also serve complimentary papads and and gravy for the rice.
This is a nice gesture from the hotel side.

Let me ask you a question first!

How much will you pay for an authentic South Indian breakfast buffet?

- 300 bucks, 400 bucks or maybe 500 bucks!

Am I right?

I know most of yours answers will be yes! Or may more than that!

But this place serves "The Authentic South Indian Buffet " at just 70 bucks!
Yes you have read correct! 70 bucks! And that too unlimited!

I was so amazed to see this place! Actually I was buying a paneer puff, from the bakery shop opposite to this place. When I turn around I suddenly notice the board โžกbuffet @ Rs 70.

I was like..seriously? Is this place jocking with me?

Then I can't resist myself going to the place. The tables were all set for buffet! Items were all ready. (Idli, Mendu vada, Uttapum, Dosa, Upma, Rava Kesari, Sambhar & Chutney)

Although I was too late. Breakfast was almost over. I was about to take already cooked Uttupam & dosa from the Hotcase...but they the stopped me having that and insisted to have the freshly cooked hotter ones!
Hospitality was 6/5.

Now let's come to the taste! Everything was so good! Uttapum were too soft (they generally add less salt in the batter..if u want u can request them to add more).
Idli were perfectly steamed. Mendu Vada was even good and too crispy. Upma was so yum...I had it twice ;)

Over all I would rate 5/5 to the food!
Best part is this place opens at 7'am in the morning. And everyday there is something different in the breakfast menu!

So make your plans soon to explore this beautiful place!

There are many many Malabar restaurants spread around the Fort area and all of them have a long tradition and are very good. Where Taste of Malabar scores is in its size and decor. The other restaurants are small and basic, whereas this place has taken some trouble to look good. The ambience is really nice and adds to the experience. But the prices are as affordable as the others. I ordered Chicken Nadan, a coconut based gravy, which was okay (in hindsight, maybe I should have stuck to ordering Pepper Chicken). To go with that I ordered my favorite Kerala Parotha. And there was the excellent raita the Malabar restaurants always serve. If you like the food of Kerala's Malabar cost, you should definitely give this place a try.

When you walk through the bylanes of Fountain area of Mumbai, it's not only nostalgic but you also find some long forgotten, hidden gems. One such place is Cafe Bahar's Taste of Malabar.

Walked into a fairly decent place, with the air conditioning groaning to keep the place cool.

The menu is very elaborate and surely deserves many more visits... There I gave you my verdict upfront!!! Yesss it's an amazing place, serving yummmiest of dishes from the Malabar coast.

After much deliberation we ordered :
Crab Chilly (we asked how much and answer was Rs 400... I did not expect it to be very big).
Mutton Pepper Masala Rs 180
Chicken Malabar Roast Rs 180
Malabar Parotta Rs 14 each can it get any better๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

All the dishes were freshly prepared and came together on the table.. While we waited, they served Kerala Pappadums and Banana wafers๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜.

The crab or should I say crabs, were served in an oval dish laden with about 5 crabs and 2 claws. They were small soft shell baby crabs and the flesh within the carapace was sweet and divinely yummmmy. I am not much of a crab eater... Wifey loves them. True to the name the crabs were tossed around in a bed of Capsicum, onions and chillies and loads of curry leaves. Not overly spicy but just the right flavours with a strong hint of pepper.

While she was attacking the crabs, I went for the chicken roast.... In one word... WOWWW!!! this was easily the best malabari Chicken Roast that I have ever had. Not at all spicy but has that underlying hint of spices that leaves you craving for the next mouthful of tender juicy, boneless pieces of chicken, cooked in its own juices with coconut milk added to get that smooth creamy texture.

Mutton Pepper Masala was the fiery pick of the day and the strong taste of pepper came out full blast, without disrupting the taste buds completely.

The hot flaky parotas went well with all the above and was an absolute steal at Rs 14 each.

An absolute gastronomic journey of flavors of God's own Country... Sooooo much to experience and only one small tummy ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚... Drooooool on ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘Œ

Great taste in each food you order. Try on a bananaย leaf with Duck Roast and Appam or a full lunch nonveg. Meanwhile, have some rasam its good for digestion and you don't feel too heavy. Thaleseri Masala is a super medium spicy just ask the waiter's to specially add this masala and cook the nonveg items and I am sure that you will definitely order extra and take up a parcel while leaving the restaurant. Last but not least try Adapradaman Yuuuummmyy mind-blowing.

Went this afternoon for lunch because I was tired of the vegetarian fare in my office on Thursdays.

Didn't expect much but boy was I surprised. I had Kerala beep fry. And I completely loved it. More for that fact that it was there than the actual flavour!

The place is alright, don't come with high expectations, the food is economical and the staff is super polite. Such a hidden gem, I'm coming back often and bringing more people.

Today, being a Republic Day, one of my family suggested this restaurant where she use to go. A humble place with mind-boggling taste. I couldn't imagine the ecstasy of having a meal here.
We ordered for a fish curry with Kerala rice, a chicken biryani for my daughter, a mutton stew with appams, idiyappam with the traditional Red chutney along with avial. This was accompanied by papaddum, curd salad & vinigared amla. Everything tasted heavenly and made with love & perfection. It never stopped there. The friendly staff got us a payasam dessert to top it up. Finger- Licking Good. Amazing service. Easy on the pocket, too.

I discovered this place while looking for Pratap Lunch Home. It truly exemplified a place and a cuisine that I wanted to sample for a really long time. So bunking my plans to meal at Pratap, I went it in here and had a hearty meal... Since I went in at 4, the restaurant was relatively empty.. Having wooden beam booth like seating, it offers a cosy environ for large groups of people to have a sumptuous meal. The waiter Veda, was my knight in shining armour, his suggestions for all the dishes were bang on target... For a sole ranger; I had the prawns pulichatu, Appams and Kerala Parotta, the Fresh Lime Soda Sweet was a welcome concoction to wash this hearty meal... Hope they had a version in the suburbs too, so we wouldn't need to travel that long...

We went to Kala Ghoda Festival and post that we went for a lunch here. We were in a group of 4-5 people. We chose this place only because of two reasons.
1. It was a Zomato Gold member.
2. I wanted to taste Malabari Cuisine.
I ordered all the dishes that the manager suggested us. And yes, to be honest all the dishes were worth the price. The restaurant is cost effective. They have a Thali system also available.
The best part is they serve food in a banana leaf. The ambience is homely and they have cabins to sit in. These cabins give a private space to your group. It's a good place to lunch with your family as well as friends.
Sometimes, you may also get complimentary kheer as a desert.
