We have been hearing a lot about this restaurant located in Fort, quite close to the RBI Headquarters. National Restaurant serves some of the best non veg starters, naans and deserts. Although their biryani wasn’t upto the mark, yet their non veg items just relished my tongue
Price: ₹220
A very nice place. The food is great. We had the sada dosa and sada rava dosa. The sambar was excellent, so was the service. 10/10 would recommend
Samosa!! at National Hindu Resturant the very renowned place in Ballard Estate and indeed for some regular lunch eating place. Although looking simple but it wasn't, it was filled with potatoes, mutter beans and different vegetable and was having such an amazing spices in it that it really tasted marvellous. The crust was thin and crispy so really made the taste super good and becasue of crispy layered enjoyed eating it. Only one think I didn't like in it, was little oily so oil was sticking in hand but definetly it can be ignored as didn't affect the amazing taste of it 😋. Must must try 💞
If you want to enjoy a lazzize sejawan tandoori then best place to dine. Just go and order tandoori and enjoy the hot and spicy taste. But waiting is issue many times.
Serves only light snacks & breakfast menu.
Tried South Indian menu & Sandwiches.
Dosa, Vada & Puri Bhaji is a must try.
Didn't enjoy their sandwiches though.
Service is good & quick.
Simple ambience, just tables & chairs.
It’s my everyday to-go place. I almost have my breakfast and lunch here only. The kind of flavor and food you get here makes me feel closer to home.
Their South Indian is very nice. The normal dal rice or Sambhar rice will give u that homemade feel. Their sukhi aalo Bhaaji with roti or poori is to die for... yumm!!
The Best Dal-Rice in the WORLD. I have been eating the same thing, every day, for more than a year. Need I really say more?
Apparently, so.
Because Zomato wants me to write at least 140 characters. So here goes: Please also try their Mini Lunch, Neer Masala Dosa (available on Wednesdays and Fridays), and Tomato Omelette (And no, it's not a real omelette, it's a cheela - I got fooled the first time). Happy eating. :-)
A No Complaints restaurant! Food is good, value is apt. One of those old places, where I feel like coming back again and again. Nothing particular.. However, dahi wada is really nice..
This place is located in the heart of office area. People from all around this area comes here for breakfast and Lunch (Dinner never been as I haven't stayed till this late). This place is pocket friendly in terms of daily routine for breakfast or Lunch. We sometimes in office also order snacks from here. You should definitely try out some Dosa's here. they are really good.
Low cost restaurant in one of the finest area... Since they are not charging much, you can't expect extra ordinary ambience and all that... But still loved it's old interior remanding mid 19th century.. have tried butter idli and tea here as no other options are available in jain food... And believe me, it's tounge's delight.. making is quite simple... Hot idli served with butter on it... Go for it.. gonna love it.. 😋

# Pocket-friendly (Very cheap food)
# Healthy food (Less oily & less spicy)
# PURE-VEG food
My Favorite items:
# Sheera
# Shrikhand
# Dal Khichdi
# Puri Bhaji
One of the few PURE-VEG restaurants in Fort area! 😊 It is almost like a common CANTEEN for all office-goers in BALLARD-ESTATE area. Most of the items cost within Rs.100, which is rare in Fort (South Mumbai)! I love PURI-BHAJI from here. They serve it with Sambhar. They give 2 options in LUNCH: Mini lunch (without sweet & papad) & Regular lunch (with sweet & papad). Their SHEERA is almost like home-made one. All of their food items are HEALTHY. So it's not for Spicy/oily food lovers! You can have your lunch from here everyday without worrying about your stomach-distress!! 😉😋
Yummiezt vegetarian food one can find and tbe prices are unbelievable. The saboodana vada is beyond words. Veey good dosas too. Kudos to the chefs
Stepping into the National Hindu restaurant is like time travel. Away from the cosmopolitan Mumbai, it is like a throwback to the 60s. Wooden benches. Menu written in chalk. Busy waiters. Archaic flooring. And only some ancient fans stirring the air in the room.
Thankfully, the food too tastes like the 60s. The Vadas and the dosa are crisp. The idlis fluffy. The khichdi delectable. The curd rice tangy.
And the prices? Well, not like the 60s, but affordable nevertheless.
It's like going back in time 50 years. It's a quite non-descript restaurant located in Ballard estate. It's insulated from the cosmic chaos of the Mumbai city. The tables are simple and so is the ambience. They follow the classic method of writing the menu items on a blackboard. The ambience is old skool, everything moves at a leisurely pace. They offer many sides, main courses, sandwiches and the famous bun muska. All the South Indian dishes are good in taste, I had ordered for a banana sheera, ulundu dosa, batata wada, bun muska and filter coffee. The banana sheera was nicely made, ulundu dosa was okish, batata wada was perfect and the filter coffee a little let down. The prices are quite reasonable, 50 bucks for a plate approx. It's a nice place to relax and have a good convo with your dear ones over a bite of sandwich or a dosa. They accept only CASH, so plastics won't buy you food here. Overall a great place !!
National Hindu Restaurents is a place where best refreshments and snacks are served at very reasonable price. Ambiance is just like late 90s resto. Very good and fast services are provided here. If you are in fort and hungry try this one. Basically a pocket friendly restaurent.
Superb Superb eating joint. A platter of south indian dishes to choose from. Idli, Wada Sambar, Dosa, Masala Dosa, Utappam. Also available are misal pav, Bun Maska, Shrikhand Puri. The tea here is also too good. Pongal Avial I would recommend for all fans of south indian dishes. If one had an office in Ballard Estate there is no need to carry lunch. Multiple options at this outlet which is also quite clean and tidy is what you need. Go for it
A typical eat and run restaurant.
The place is really popular with Ballard Estate office goers. Extremely crowded in afternoons. You might have to share a table with someone else.
Despite being heavily crowded and fast table turning, the place is extremely clean. As soon as we got the table, a waiter promptly took the order. Since we were not in a mood to eat much, we ordered only medu vada. Service was fast. Order got served in five minutes. The taste was good, but not out of the world.
You can be assured that whatever you order will be tasty. Since the place doesn't specialise in any one cuisine, a dish will be hard to find which will blow your mind.
Value for money is extremely high. You can have a good meal in under 120 bucks per person.
Highly recommended if you want to have a quick, affordable meal.
FOLLOW me on zomato if you liked the review.
Love love love national! Great food, great price... excellent people who run it. And they were especially helpful during this demonetisation period
Saviour for lunch hours, this is. If you are not carrying your own food or getting food delivered. Awfully close to most offices in Ballard Estate and has a huge rush during the afternoons. Their dishes are plain, filling and digestive. Lot of South Indian platters to choose from.
Best vegetarian oldest south indian Restaurant in Ballard pier, fort, mumbai. Owned by sachianand kini & family, known for quality & economic food. If you are at Ballard pier your search for good south indian veg food ends hear.
The Veg Thali in lunch here is very good. Simple and digestive. Don't forget to ask for that extra papad. It adds taste to the food. Good environment, swift service and sincere staff!
Went here for quick breakfast. Ballard estate Lane has many old eateries but this one has maintained a decent price as well !!
About the food, very basic and usual menu but taste is nice ! Good clean .
Also, Curd rice is very nice .
As this was the closest restaurant in the vicinity of my office in Ballard pier, I decided to visit this place. I worked for over a year at Ballard pier and often visited this restaurant for breakfasts. For lunchs I used to visit this restaurant almost daily. It serves vegetarian food only.
During the lunch time the restaurant remains crowded very much, particularly between 1-2 PM. Their Veg Lunch or Veg thali is quite famous and believe me, as a hardcore non-veg foood lover, if I am praising it so would you. The thali contains a subzi, daal, rice, 2 chapatis, papad, raita and a sweet. It's sufficient for person. The dahi vada they serve is quite good. They serve some 4 types of sheera namely pineapple, apple, banana and saada. The pineapple sheera and apple sheera both are equally good. The dosa is fine. Lassi is rich and quite thick(though never managed to drink it with the straw they provide). Veg biryani, Veg pullav and lemon rice all are good but the quantity is not enough for a person.
Their is no doubt that the food they serve is hygenic, simple and tastes good. It is recognised as a grade II eatery by the city municipal corporation. The prices are rereasonable. During the lunch hour it is difficult to find a seat. One may have to wait for 5-10 minutes and share the table with others. The owners are very humble. It is one of the few places in mumbai that I would miss after moving back to Delhi..
A no frills eatery in Ballard Estate where the only concern is food. Around lunchtime it is packed as all the office goers throng to this eatery.
They serve a variety of snacks and full meal options. Their Thali is supposed to be really good. But their South Indian fare is superlative. Be it the dosa or idli, it will remind you of the South Indian joints in Matunga. The puri Bhaji is not too great and the quantity of the Bhaji is quite less. Most dishes are under Rs. 100 and is one of the go to places for a quick, cheap and tasty meal in that area.
I happened to be in Ballard Estate many a times this past week. Just entered this place for a quick lunch. What I liked most was the fact that all food items are much cheaper than any other restaurant in the neighbourhood. Spread is simple not much variety but lot more cleaner n spacious than other places. I ordered one biryani (disclaimer: small qty so order two if really hungry) n to my amazement unlike other restos in Mumbai it was served in layers - gravy, plain basmati, coloured n gravy rice. Totally worth the dime.
This place seriously needs no expert review or comments. It's the oldest known restaurant in the area and serves very simple, home made types, reasonably priced, south Indian styled meals all day to it's customers. Right from breakfast to lunch and lunch to chaitime snacks and teatime snacks to dinner I've always seen most tables occupied at this place.. Eaten here a couple of times now when we are places at Ballard pier for work and absolutely love their green peas upma, rava dosas, puri bhaji, lemon rice, bissebelle rice, dal khichadi, Punjabi Samosa, neer dosa and so many more things I can't think of right now.. Don't skip their pineapple sheera whenever u visit them (note that they don't add that typical yellow colour or any essence, just pieces of pineapple) and they serve this typical south Indian filter coffee which is a must have.
Every office has its go to place, this is mine.
Residing in a heritage building, National is a simple old school restaurant. Which otherwise you may have ignored but here, you just can't resist. It's definitely among the better udupi joints I know. Your lunch here is time and cost effective LITERALLY. Their food too is good and on any afternoon you'll walk out as a satisfied customer even if not the happiest foodie.
Best thing about this restaurant is that it serves you good tasting food and that too quickly. South indian is a must try, so is bun maska, poori baji and misal pav needs to be tasted.. Lots of memories associated with this palce.
Best place in Fort for South Indian dishes.. Authentic.. Never miss this whenever I go to Fort. Price is very reasonable too. Thali is just 95 bucks..
Amazing place. Food tastes home cooked. Absolutely budget friendly. Much recommended for a quick snack if you're around!

Superb restaurant.
Big and spacious.
Reminds u of old restaurant style.
Simple and elegant looks.
Great taste and fast service.
The quality of food is superior.
Simply superb veg South Indian restaurant.
Must try.
This Family owned Pure vegetarian South Indian restaurant is now being run by 3rd generation. The authenticity is being maintained well and the owners are extremely polite in behaviour.
The father son dua ensure comfort of their customers.
If you are near by for Cruise terminal then this is very near (walking).
Must try is their Onion rawa Masala and samosa.
Kudos to the restaurant kitchen team 👍.
Spend a lifetime in SoBo and yet never ran into this one until I read about it in an online article. The location takes a bit of walking to but it is in a very nice place surrounded by heritage buildings. The hotel is humble, efficient with a decent crowd and amazing value for money. We had the Ginger Lemon drink (awesome!), Garlic Masala Dosa (strong but nice), Onion Rawa Masala Dosa (crispy like a papad but nice) and Cold Coffee (OK OK, not much sweet). The cocunut chutney seemed a bit suspect and one of us who tried it didn't like it. The sambar was alright.
Had an amazing experience at the restaurant serving south indian cuisine which was simple and yet delightful. The servers were also polite and respectful when ordering and would sometime ask if you need anything else. Anyhow when I entered it took me back to it's Initial beginnings, which gave the vibe of old bombay during those british times. I must say the idli vada sambar was indeed amazing alongside the chutney too! I will give it a 5 star
Good food and well maintained restaurant. It gets crowded during lunch time. One tip is to be early to avoid rush. Along with tiffin and few meal varieties, they also serve juices and toasts. It's complete vegetarian restaurant. They provide parcel service too. They keep it simple and value for money.
Excellent onion rawa masala dosa , batata wada, bread butter toast. Filter is not good avoid it
Retro style, good location, hygienic inter area. I have taken punjabi thali, that was tasty. But quantities are not adequate.
Good South Indian dishes available at very affordable price. Go to place for masala dosa and cold coffee during office break.
Samosa!! at National Hindu Resturant the very renowned place in Ballard Estate and indeed for some regular lunch eating place. I found it to be one of the few hotels maintained with an Ancient ambience in a good location with reasonable prices. Almost, all kinds of South Indian food is available except meals. I Recommend to try here. Only negative point i observed is they charge additional cost for Chutney / Sambhar which is served in addition to the quantity provided in the plate.
Serving since 1883. 3rd generation of the owners and still serving. Good place to eat with some nostalgic menu as Bournvita and cutting chai. Overall great taste and services are nice.
