Aparna is one of the best Mangalorean bars in Mumbai. They serve amazing sea food and Mangalorean delicacies. Alcohol is cheap since they serve quarter system. This is not a place where you can take your family or lady friends. This is strictly a place where you go with your guy friends.
Food: The food is exceptional. I would recommend pomfret and surmai masala/tawa, chicken sukka, prawns chilly and sukka, bondas chilly. In fact you order any seafood and it is usually fresh and tasty. I have not had a bad experience with sea food. I can’t comment on the kebabs and chinese stuff since I have not tried it here. Though, I’m not sure why you would want to try them anyway. This place is known for it’s fabulous seafood.
Ambience: Nothing to talk about. This is your average Mangalorean bar that you find in every nook and corner of Bombay. Service is quick and courteous. They have an AC section too, which is a cramped room with table and chairs.
Cleanliness: Clean cutlery, however wipe them before you use them. This is not a place where cleanliness is a priority.

Located close by to Sion Railway Station, this restaurant is good for home delivery or parcels. The service is quick and hospitality is warm. Best known for their seafood dishes and Butter Chicken. They also serve common breakfast items in the mornings, so one can check in for immediate breakfast. Fish curries were yummy.

Aparna Lunch home has great tasty food. Its an old joint for guys ..only thing i find missing is old hindi movie songs palyed in background. If you are  group of  frnds and prefer no nonsense noisy and friendly environment ..Aparna is the place..!! I recommend starters with drinks  "Surmai Tawa fry" , " Prawns Masala Dry ( add chopped onions)"  even the usual "Alti Palti " Fried egg feels great here. In main course most of the time "Dal Khichdi " ( becuase you are full with starters )  is truly awesome ..since i have been thr n number of times .. Chciken Biryani boneless is great, Chichken Fried Rice with chicken Manchurian is awesome.. Prawns in Punjabi masala ..Chicken Satthey (Saute) every thing is good and best part is its always the same ..you can hardly complain..Most of the time as a foodie you will never be disappointed if you choose to stick to your favorites.. I miss Aprna Lunch home

The place is a bit shady. If someone is not aware of the place then they wouldn't visit it. But a friend insisted for best Chicken. The place has nothing like ambience and I wouldn't suggest it for a family.

The place is famous for its Chicken Maratha which is not mentioned on their menu. So you should be aware of it. It's the best spicy Chicken I ever had. Quantity of full dish is for 4 person so order accordingly. Rates were reasonable.

This review is based on Home delivery only.
I was recommended to try the fish from this place. My insatiable hunger for the perfect fish always keeps me trying out different places.
I ordered the bombil area fry, the tarli gassi gravy(a fish in not very familiar with). Ordered a side portion of appams. And the rasa came with it I think.
It was a heavenly meal. I was fully satiated. I loved that the preparation was authentic. My only criticism would be that the bombil fry was a bit low on salt.
I'm surely trying prawns n other fish from this place the next time.

On a dry day in a bar! To try the sea Food..
Aparna is located 100m from Sion Lunch home and zomato may confuse you with the location, because it is on the side of sion lunch home at the end of the lane, and not opposite to it as suggested by #zomato

A small place again run by Konkan guys! We were two of us and tried the prawns masala, surmai with brown rice and steam rice ( I was the one preferring steam rice)

The surmai didn't disappoint at all. Was a large chunk enough for the two of us. The prawns were slightly disappointing as the portion came out less, the taste of the prawns wasn't great but the masala was good! Rice and curry were typical mangalorean style so no complains on that. Service was quick, there is not much of ambiance. Come here when sion lunch home is full. Good alternative, which is just next door!

Your search for good Mangalorean seafood in Mumbai ends here. I've been visiting this place regularly for the last 15 years. Never felt any remorse in any of those occasions. Place looks ordinary from outside, however what they serve is excellent food.

They serve yummy Bondas (squid). Crispy or cooked in South Indian masala, both are a treat. I've tasted almost all the seafood dishes here. All dishes are excellent. My favourites are Tarli fry, Bangada fry, Surmai shallow fry.

Service is quick and prompt by friendly experienced staff.

Aparna is a complete nondescript bar & local watering hole located at Sion. I would have skipped eating here, if it wouldn’t have been for Vidyadheesh’s review and enticing photos.

Aparna serves Manglorean cuisine along with the regular North Indian fare & Indian Chinese.

Our order comprised of an undecided Prawn Starter, Butter Chicken, Tandoori Roti & Surmai Fry. There weren’t any prawn starters mentioned in the menu uploaded on Zomato except for prawn chilly, so the person taking the order suggested Prawn Kudlu.

I had already read that women are not allowed at Aparna, and this certainly piqued my curiosity. Some day  I would want to know the rationale behind this misogynistic rule. Anyhow, I had already placed an order on call so that we could pick it up without wasting any time. As our car pulled in, the security came gasping and kept mumbling, ‘ladies ban hai’ , twice or thrice. I explained to him that I won’t be entering the bar and I have just come to pick up my parcel. It was a funny encounter.

Piping hot food was handed over to me by the security as I waited in the car. My plans to just seek entry in the bar were foiled. ;)

Back home, I quickly unwrapped the foil over the Surmai Fry and I was in love though it did appear to be burnt. But the size of the fish was like a dream. Mildly spiced fish with a hint of ajwain (not very sure of ajwain usage though), was fresh and flaky white. Who doesn’t love Surmai, when the fish in itself is divine. The only glitch is that, fish fry is something when ordered in starts to sweat and that makes the fish soggy. So the fun to dig in to a freshly fried fish was missing. Nevertheless, it was well made.

The Prawn Kudlu was something I have never heard of. There were around 15 Pieces of steamed prawn tossed in a masala preparation, which tasted like a milder version of Pulimunchi topped with a generous amount of kaddipatta (curry leaves). The prawns were fresh and well made. Though it wasn’t exactly a starter per se. Pairing it with neer dosa would be a better choice than eating it as a starter. So I would categorize this as Main Course and not as an appetizer.

Butter chicken (Half Portion) was creamy, buttery, not high on spice and not too sweet as well and contained generous portion of chicken. The quantity is sufficient for 3 persons. It was well made and an excellent option for those who cannot tolerate high spice levels.

Major disappointment for me was that they only gave us 2 tandoori rotis instead of 4 and they charged me for 4 rotis. It was too late by then. An oversight, I can excuse as the food was good.

They also gave some gassi gravy / fish curry sans the fish with the order. I had it for lunch the next day with steamed rice. The gravy was so flavoursome with a lovely aroma of tirphal or tepphal - a spice used extensively in Konkani & Manglorean Cuisine, coconut and garam masala.

Conclusion - Like how all other ‘Manglorean’ (Shetty’s/GSB’s and the like) owned bars I have eaten at, have never ever disappointed me, Aparna surpassed my expectations. Total damages were around INR 950/-. Reasonably priced for Mumbai Standards. The menu is extensive and I am looking forward to get my hands on other seafood preparations.

Aparna is an average looking lunch home & bar from the outside. Don't go on looks. The place has ac and non ac section. The interiors are shady but goes with the mood. The place is know for cheap booze with some delicious Chicken & Sea Food. The staff is very quick and service is good. We ordered beer and the sides with delicious green chutni were very good. We ordered Chicken Chilly Dry which was very tasty with fresh and tender Chicken perfectly cooked. Next was fried Baangda Fish which was superb. Shallow fried Surmai is super delicious. I'm going to comeback again for that. We finished with Chicken Triple Schezwan Rice which was very tasty but less in quantity. Overall a great place to have a drink with friends with a distinct and rustic ambience, certainly not recommended for a female companion. Food is delicious, booze is prized well, centrally located, quick service, all these are hi - points. They should look more into cleanliness. Highly recommended for people looking around for a pocket friendly bar around Sion. Would definitely visit again. 😀

This being a family restaurant cum bar ,one would be of the opinion that the food served here won't be of satisfactory nature. But this restaurant is a treat for food lovers especially south Indian food. There are a few shortcomings such as unavailability of parking facility and bit of cramped space , but the food quality and quantity is worth the money spent on it.

“What the FISH” are the words which escaped from the mouth of my colleagues as soon as exited Aparna. What an experience it was for the fish lovers, mind blowing!

It has become a ritual with us to explore new eateries / restaurants after meetings. It has 2 benefits; outstation colleagues are happy that we treat them to new cuisines / dishes every time, we discover new places / dishes and for me personally [selfishly as well], it keeps the foodie & photographer in me busy.

One such jaunt like this last night landed us at Aparna, Sion. We had planned to visit the town side, to explore Parsi cuisine on the recommendation of fellow foodie Sandeep Nadkarni, initially but my boss came up with this place [it’s his favourite] & on his recommendation, we came here.

Location:

Its located bang on the Sion-Panvel / Thane highway, below the flyover. After crossing Sion hospital, as you travel from Dadar towards Thane, skip the next fly-over and take the road going below the flyover. You will come a big round about traffic island, keep going straight. You will come to a traffic signal. Cross the signal and on the extreme left corner of the next junction is this restaurant.

Ambience:

This is Bar & Restaurant and a bar in the literal sense of the word, a “quarter joint” if I may use the word. So you won’t find any fancy & upmarket embellishments / décor. Like any typical bar, it has 2 types of sitting arrangements, Air-conditioned & Non-air-conditioned.

This place has 2 main roads adjacent to it, with very heavy vehicular traffic. The Non-A/c section is right at the entrance and is very chaotic & deafening. We chose to sit in the A/c section which on the inside of the premises & obviously a bit sound proof.

Food:

Its owned and run by a Mangalorean hence you will find a lot of Mangalorean dishes on the menu apart from the regular Chinese & North Indian cuisine.

Since my boss is a regular here & this restaurant is one of his favorite, we let him do the ordering. Little did we know we were going to be blown away by what was going to be served.

Round 1: Surmai Tava Fry, Mandeli fry & Mushroom chilly.

The Mandeli [Golden Anchovies] came first. Crisply fried, bereft of oil and lookling very niced. They are to be consumed whole without much botheration about the bones etc. I was getting this gyan while being a witness to the consumption of the fishes. About 10-15 pieces are served in a plate.

Surmai Tava Fry, undoubtedly, the star attraction of the evening. It was the freshest fish I have seen being served, with an red masala coating, from which an “ummm” aroma was emanating. Though I don’t eat fish but by looking at the flaky pieces of fish, the ease with which the meat breaking off and the look of satisfaction on the faces, I was assured of its freshness. But believe me; my colleagues had to wait for a few seconds for the steam to escape from the broken pieces before they could put one in their mouth. Look at one of the photos, where the pieces are stacked one above the other; it was the same moment. It’s one big piece served in a plate.

Mushroom chilly was okayish & run-of-the-mill. Just that I could not sit there hungry watching their face, hence I ordered this. Nothing worth mentioning about it.

Round 2: Another set of Surmai Tava Fry and Ladyfish / Kane in masala preparation.

Surmai warranted a repeat order.

They also called for a Ladyfish, which is also known as Kane, in a masala preparation. This masala is the famed Mangalorean Pulli Munchi preparation, Pulli means sour & Munchi means spicy. The sour quotient is made up by the use of dried tamarind soaked in water and then squeezing them in the gravy. The spice quotient is made up by red chilli powder and the small spicy green chilies. Small cuts were made across the body of the fish so as to allow the spices to fuse with the meat. This is also a speciality and was raved about by the colleagues. It was over in minutes. They serve 3 pieces to a plate.

Main course: Paneer Pulli Munchi & Neer Dosa

After raving and feasting over the fishes, my colleagues were in no mood for the main course. They decided to skip it. I was the one hungry and was definitely having Neer Dosa, so the steward recommended Paneer Pulli Munchi to go with it.

Neer Dosa is served 6 pieces in a plate. The first piece was over within the first minute of serving. The 2nd one was scooped up along with the green pudina chutney. Soft & fluffy, the Neer Dosa was one of the best I ever had.

Paneer in the Pulli Munchi was misplaced and I should have gone for a mix veg preparartion but the spicy & sour preparation was true to its name & genre. Small green chilies, slit vertically wete added to the gravy, brought tears while consuming it.

The bill came to Rs.3100 with beer, rum + soft drinks and the side accompaniments, 4 plates of Surmai, 1 Mandeli, 1 Ladyfish, Paneer Pulli Munchi, Neer Dosa & Mushroom Chilly. It’s a definitely value for money & cheaper than most restaurants.

They serve a Gassi [fish gravy] along with the liquor you order, that also is a speciality & unique to this place. It’s basically a fish broth with loads of coconut based masala thrown in.

The Pudina chutney is also equally amazing and complements the chakli & papad very well. I finished 1 Neer Dosa with the chutney itself.

All in all, an amazing food experience for the taste buds & the eyes as well. I enjoyed it thoroughly and I am sure, you will as well.

Highly recommended to all fish lovers if you don’t mind the bar ambience. Or else you can parcel it & have it @ home but that may take away some element of freshness from it depending upon the distance you have to travel.

Must Have:
Surmai Tava Fry
Neer Dosa
Kane in Pulli Munchi gravy
Kori Roti

Happy Eating!

Aparna Restaurant located under the Sion flyover is on the way to Chunnabatti from Sion Railway Station.

If you don't pay attention you may just pass it by even though the signage has improved over time.

Now Sion does have options for non-vegetarian food well, if you are looking for authentic Mangalorean cuisine this is the place you should head to or order in depending on your preference.

Decor and ambience is like any regular bar hence not encouraging for ladies or families to dine in. So the next best alternative is order in/ take away.

The most scrumptious dishes I have tried are several over time, listing out a few here;

Recommendations in Fish

Bombil fry
Surmai Tawa Fry
Prawns Sukka
Prawns Masala
Prawns Handi Biryani
Shimpli Sukka

Recommendations in Chicken

Butter Chicken
Chicken Handi
Chicken Kadai
Chicken Lucknowi
Chicken Handi Biryani

One of the few restaurants serving Kane, Thate, Tarli, Lape etc.

No meal is complete without their soft and delicious Neer Dosas and Solkadi. Appams are tasty too.

Quality and quantity of the dishes is awesome. Pricing is apt and delivery is fairly quick.

Wonder why bars serve such lovely food.....

To describe this place the first word that comes in my mind is WOW!! A paradise for non-veg lovers, the consistency of their gravy items is just perfect. The appitizers too are pretty tempting the best part being they are very moist and juicy. Not a place to go and eat with family as its a bar, but surely home delivery is a must try. Butter chicken, reshmi kabab, chicken bhuna and biryani are the highlights.

Butter chicken and Neer dosa. Jeera rice and fish curry. A must have menu at Aparna. The food is excellent. One of the very, very few places in Sion that serve such quality food. Ambience is a common one like any 2 or 3 star bar in Mumbai. So, food is the only thing you can go there to eat if you don't want to hassle through traffic to go anywhere else.

Nested under the Sion Flyover at the junction going towards Chunabhatti, it can easily be ignored as a regular quarter joint. The ambiance actually suits one to perfection with a rather shady look.

But Aparna rock for one and only one reason- its sea food. It has the widest seen variety of fish on its menu including some rarities like Tharli, Bangda and Gahsialong with tasty bits of Mandeli to munch on.

Not a family place by any lengths, but if food-booze and late night are the odds, Aparna is a winner.

I have been to aparna a number of times. On my first visit, I was feeling rather awkward to enter the tiny dingy restaurant as the place was filled with men drinking, eating, merry making and loudly chit chatting. Once I plonked myself on an empty table-for-2 along with a friend, I hurriedly ordered the prawns my mangalorean friend had been praising so much of. In less than 10 min, we were served the prawn fry and prawn curry with neer dosa. I lost all inhibition with the greatness of the food tasted, and soon I began feeling at home polishing off every speck of masala on my plate. Hailing from north east India, here i was enjoying the best south Indian food in Mumbai city of West India. Good value for money and a satisfied palate . I would go back to aparna again and again every time the mangalorean-food-craving monster shows up within me , and the monster shows up quite often !

No music no frills, just eat and leave with a smile on your face. Most of the diners are taxi drivers and locals.Being a chef and foodie by profession,I have been to some of the best restaurants in the world, this somehow still remains my favourite especially when Im super hungry and have cobwebs in my wallet. The starters here are amazingly good and come quickly. Service is decent provided you get place to sit. Prefer the AC dining than the regular one outside as u enter. Very few Bars qualify also a good eating place and Aparna scores well. This mangalorean restaurant is predominantly a BAR and regulars do not need to go to another eating joint after the drinks as the food is quite good.
Needlessly to say, it is closed on all dry days, for food also, and on all other days is open till about 12 midnight.
The restaurant may look small the moment you step in , there are many more rooms converted to table sections and also an AC section which is filled with people and their drinks.
There is no section solely for food and so families may want to avoid this place.
Coming to the food, their Neer dosa is a speciality and so is their prawns masala. Normally we would have neer dosa with the gassi ,but here one can combine the neer dosa with the prawns masala.
Fish is also good and the squids are something not to be missed. The ususal mutton, chicken masala, sukka variety and thalis are all good,
Directions: Nr sion station, entrance is diagonally opp 352 bus stop,
Meals for two without drinks:Rs.600.
