Where to go when one is hungry at early morning 4 or 5, the answer is always Maddu's Mess near IIT main gate.
They serve the one of the best Dosas in the area. Must try their Egg Dosa, Onion Dosa and Idli Vada.
Just one recommendation would be to keep some air freshener near the entry :)
Looking for a very early morning breakfast without spending much, than Maddu mess is the answer to your cravings.
It is a small food joint where even at 4am you will find a lot of rush.
There is a small seating space else the best is to stand and eat.
Limited options but good food. Sambar and chutney i found average taste as i have tasted much better ones on the streetside in the past.
While we were visiting powai
We see this south Indian place
As I love south Indian foodπ
I gave it a try
We took
Sada Dosa
& medu wada
The sada dosa was really good and crunchy
Just loved it
And medu was tasty !
Thankyou β€οΈ

An awesome place for quick bites. This is good for people who want too eat quite early in the morning. This serves good food at a reasonable rate and I love to hang out at this place.
One word... Bliss! Whether you are a night crawler or a morning person, this place will soothe your hunger pangs! This place not only serves the regular south Indian cuisine, but will surprise you with innovative cross overs *drum rolls* anda dosa πππ just go already! Thank me later ππ
Very few places are open before dawn in Powai. Maddu Mess is one of them. The menu is limited and pocket friendly . The Dal Wada and Fried Idli are a must try. Also the Onion Dosa is worth every penny you pay.
Kudos!
Maddu Mess is a pocket friendly place for eating some tasty south indian food. It opens up as early as 4:30 in the morning and I guess stays open till 10am, not too sure of the closing time though. 3 of us went there while we are Powai. It is a little difficult place to locate, but do follow Google maps as it helped us. The Fried Idli, Medu wada and Daal wada are surely a must try. Chutney and Sambar are freely available to be taken from the containers placed outside the kitchen, but I found the chutney too diluted and the Sambar a little bland. Overall, it is a great place to satisfy your taste buds at this early in the morning.
Very cheap and clean food!Β Served with an amazing blend of sambhar and chutneys! And do try the Egg Dhosas, they are quite fulfilling and super-tasty.
Have been visiting this place for more than a decade , as it opens up early around 4 am it's a favorite with youngters awake whole night and want a sumptuous meal before heading home . It's a family run small outlet , the excess road is narrow and stinks but the family operating from a small kitchen house make sures that the ambience doesn't stop you from visiting it again and again , cheap prices ,great taste ,homely feel .
Do try there idli medu vadas and onion dosa . Sambhar also is very tasty , it's medium spicy and tangy in taste . All food is freshly prepared in front of your eyes .
I should say this is the best place for the Dosas and Medu Vada. They also serve Egg Dosa and I think this is the only place serving breakfast so ealy morning.
There are few points I would like to bring to the notice of public in general and Zomato in specific:
1. The Zomato location of the place is wrong. It will leave you on the main road, infront of Y-Gate IIT Bombay. Rather search for Maddu Mess in Google and where the map takes you, from there you will see a very narrow lane on your right between the shops. Lights will be on. Go in and look to your right for the sign board.
2. Please update the menu in Zomato. I have attached the updated menu photo.
Now coming to the food, it was good. I had Anda Dosa and Fried Idly. They make anda Dosa by pouring the egg on the dosa crust. It's similar to Egg Roll/Egg Wrap/Egg Franky. The crunch and egg have it a unique taste. Fried Idly was ok, different but could have tasted better.
But I didn't like the sambhar and chutney. Both lacked the authenticity. But at 4.30am and that too at this price, all good. Worth a visit.
Don't go in with a lot of expectations. Fair little place to go for breakfast. Yoy don't expect a lot of places to open at such wee hours. Really cheap and good food. Try the egg dosa. Worth the money you pay for.
To satisfy your morning food cravings..
Just opposite IIT Mumbai, Powai in a chawl you find a queue lined up. All club, night owls head to Maddus for awesome breakfast. No proper dining area though you have to eat the way you can. Just remember reach there early morning maybe at 5AM.
Egg dosa, Fried Idli is my favorite.
Best south Indian dishes outlet in powai. Also at 5 am with low cost.
High value for money.
Lacks a little I hygiene but you always make parcels.
Best south indian food during early morning. Though the place do not look like hygienic but taste, price and the homeliness of the place overlook the hygiene. If you are around powai after late night party and do not find anything to find in the morning ( around 5-5:30 am). This is the place to go.
Dal wada, coffee and onion dosa are must to have.
Cheers
Madhu Mess is a saviour and a hidden gem of powai night owls. It's very difficult to locate the place as it's in a narrow way between the shops.
It serves some crazy egg dosas and meduwada.
The chutney and sambar is like unlimited as it's kept inside the small place where you can sit and eat.
It's really crowded at times. It's not always that you'll get a place to sit so be ready to stand and eat or take a parcel.
It's a self service place and yoh have to pay right when you order the food.
One of the best places to eat in the morning.
Opening at 5.30AM, very congested place, smelly entrance and no sign board.
This place had served as hunger lifeline for so many IIT Bombay entrepreneurs, CEOs, students on night outs, office persons and whom not.
Near IIT market gate, this place is very tough to find for a newbie and since its morning when it opens, hence you do not have anyone to enquire the address.
It is suggested to clarify the exact location and way to reach before heading .
Coming to the food, 2 person can have their break fast within INR100 and that too with good taste and hunger kill.
Fried idli and anda dosa are must haves.
Mostly hype. Not very clean. You might find a cat or two in and around the place. Egg dosa is good though. Oh and dirt cheap prices, go and hog like a pig.
The place which every IITB student knows about. The food is above average but its the aura associated with this place that attracts you to go there if you put up an all nighter and have nothing else to eat before breakfast starts in mess π
There are places you go after extensive searching on Zomato and there are places you go just because the very existence demands a visit. Maddu Mess comes in the latter category. It's on(should be) the bucket list of every one living in IITB not just because it's the go-to place after a night out, but because the whole experience is an interesting one.
Now, coming to the food, this is a place where you just keep eating. We tried every item on the menu (because it's a small and cheap menu). I especially found the fried idli amazing. If you choose the fried idli properly from the plate (I'd say go for the thin ones), it definitely pleases the palate. Medu Vada and Anda Dosa were equally good. Dal Vada was also tasty but I've had better. Finishing it off with hot coffee (of course, after the stomach was full with all above) was truly refreshing.
It's a tough place to find out unless you ask someone on the way and the place is quite dingy. But should that matter? Hell no!
A bliss for IITians! A saviour for those late-night marathon of watching a series! They serve idli, daal wada, fried idli, dosa and chai. Goes easy on pocket! Except for the location (which is hard to find if you are a newbie) everything is perfect! Definitely worth the money
Maddu mess is the perfect place to go to after a nightout. The fried idli is the best thing they offer and the great food helps you catch a good sleep.
Cant say more about the taste... its jus awesum... paradise for early risers...the names itself r their trademarks n identity.. must try idli anda dosa..

The food is prepared the typical South-Indian home style by some friendly Telugus.
The omelette dosas are mind blowing.
The fried idli is a must try.
The food is cheap and worth the money.
Though the ambiance is bad, the good food makes up for it.
Make sure to be early (4.30 AM) to relish fresh food.
Maddu Mess is a small South Indian breakfast place opposite IIT-B, with a ferociously loyal following. It opens from 4 a.m. to 9.30 a.m. and any night-owl aware of its existence shall swear by it. When I say this, do not make assumptions about the look and feel of the place.Β Maddu Mess is actually a small joint, located in a dingy corner, in an alley filled with the stench of poultry. My first reaction when I finally located the place was β βOh God, what have I gotten myself into?β But if you can actually ignore this and move past all the thoughts about the unhygienic alley and actually order the food here, you will be surprised.
Been here a lot of times, because I am from IIT and it is the only place open after you have an allnighter and you feel the hunger to bite your chappals off at 4 in the morning. The food is not that good to give a high recommendation value but simplicity in preparations and taste really is worth appreciating.
Things to have here: dal vada, anda dosa, medu vada, chaai
No ambiance is there, its just to satisfy you hunger when the need it at its most brutal state. People here are very friendly and serve you real well.
This is the place where IITians visit for early morning breakfast with besties. With a limited menu, you get to enjoy each and everything available here and can eat till your stomach is brimming. Thank you for being in front of IITB.
This place is a hidden gem for night owl IIT-IAN. The place remains open from 4-9am . It serves plain, egg, onion, egg+onion combo dosas, idli, medhu and dal vadai with sambhar, coconut chutney and tomato chutney. The coffee served in traditional "tumbler" reminds me of home. What more can I ask :) . It is also very light on the pocket compared to places that serve dosas so bad and triple the price.
The 4.5 is only for the food! Not for ambiance.
The place has a couple of odd chairs n tables put together. The way in reeks of chicken shit... So hold ur breath for 10 Sec. It is opposite to IIT market gate. Ask for directions better. ( was too hungry to take pics, next time)
Maddu mess is an IITans' staple. Its a ritual to visit maddu after a nightout with the set of your closest friends . Maddu has a limited menu, but the timings and location of the place make it an experience to be had. Try the onion egg dosa and filter coffee for a unique experience. And do say hi to John bhaiyya from me.
A heaven for people who are OWLs or awake all night. Open in morning 4-7am, they serve delicious medu wada, egg dosa, idli. really awesome for hungry stomach. :)
The perfect place for midnight food hunt. The only place around Powai to serve from 4A.M. The food is good with self serving in South Indian Cuisine. Onion Dosa, Egg Dosa and Dal Wada are a must try here followed by cutting chai.
Food: 4/5
Ambiance: 1/5
Service: 4/5
Value for money: 5/5
Maddu mess is the best breakfast place I have ever been to. The egg dosa, the vada, everything is so flavourful that u even can do without its accompaniments. And I promise you can get up before having 3-4 egg dosas and 2-3 vadas. Love this place.
The best place to eat from 4 in the morning till 9 AM. Yea, you saw this right, its only for breakfast, the idlis, vada, and the dosa is such an elixir to curb the morning hunger. Freshly cooked medu vada is crunchy and very tasty.
Provides a great breakfast for stranded south indians. Yes hygiene of the place is an issue but is compensated by warm dosas, vada and coffee...."kaapi". And you can always get it parceled.
When there is nothing to eat early morning just go to maddu mess they fill your belly. Best place for iitians after night out. Service is good. They should look upon hygiene of the place.
This place small and not so fancy.. but the food you get her is absolutely amazing..late night or early morning if you hungry and around powai this is the place to go...
This place is a soul saver for extreme late ngt working n partyin pple and for early morning breakfast.. have been goin here for yrs now.. this place runs with a blend of very few but hardworking people.. they begin from 4.30 am to 9 am all days of the week.. plz don't expect any ambience here.. to get a seat at times is like an achievement.. at times I have even stood n eaten because crowd.. the food is jus worth it.. double egg dosa, medu wada, fried idli n coffee are my favourites n regulars out here.. they also serve dal wada, Sada dosa, onion dosa, idli n tea.. it is very cheap as compared to any other joint for the quality of food served.. egg dosa Rs.25, idli Rs.8 a piece, medu wada Rs.10 a piece.. wat more can u ask for
still hunting for budget food & breakfast heres another option. But I wont complain about the breakfast. They prepare it so hot & fresh! The medu vadas are crispier & the coconut chutney rocks! Dont expect a seating just ask a take away.
Since this place is up in here, Zomato surely seems to be doing a greatttt job in hunting food joints coz I never expected this place can be listed. such joints are so much needed for party freaks to satisfy their hunger post party, late night workers and watchmans :p. to talk about this joint, it is quite famous for its egg dosa however what I love the most here is idli fry which is served fresh and hot. not to miss on their medu vada which are not just yummy and crispy but also big enough. Michael, the guy who runs this joint along with his family always welcomes nicely and gets us an accommodation which is often a tough task in here. this place can also be called oven hot coz it is really as hot as oven for there is no good air available, can be better if you sit outside. lastly, finding this place for 1st time is surely gonna be a challenging task unless you have someone who knows it
Splendid early morning breakfasts in an unidentifiable drab area. There is just one A4 sized sign board that says 'maddu mess' with an arrow pointing towards a alley.
Anyone fathoming a big dining area would find the exact opposite because they have a kitchen that has a couple of tables inside. And a table outside with stools to sit on. Off late they have been opening up rooms when it gets crowded a little.
No recommendations are such. All southern delicacies are available here at dirt cheap prices. Place is always full with 'only' students from IIT-B and nearby colleges.
Been burning the midnight oil for work or studies? Were at an all night party?. Perfect place to grab a bite before you catch up with good sleep.
Ps: Get an autowala to take you to this place who is not half-asleep.
Well, its my 50th review. And what better than this unique breakfast place just outside IITB that provides food at the most unconventional time (4am to 8am), when all other food places are closed down.
This place has a cult following among the students of IITB and is gaining quite a recognisition outside also. Located in lanes outside IIT market gate, this place serves south Indian food in early hours of morning. Their fried idlis, onion dosas and medu vadas are heavenly before going to bed after a night out.
The place is not 100% hygienic but they are constantly improving, as shown by the increased sitting space and hand wash area which were not present earlier. Service is nice and people are really good!
This place is just awesome!
Want food @4am in morning, this is the place to be. Cheap yet decent quality tasty food. Very well known place among IITians. Fried Idli and egg dosa are their speciality. Space is less, and even @5am, you will have to wait for your turn. Amazing place :D
I have been going this place for 4 straight years now and every time I go, I fall in even more love with this place.Β
So, if you are looking out for some well maintained AC restaurant, then I am sorry to say but this is not what Maddu Mess is!
Maddu Mess opens at around 4-4.30 AM; every morning the seats are quickly occupied and equal or more number people waiting impatiently with their tongue out for their chance to grab a seat. The Menu is pretty simple - Sada Dosa, Anda Dosa, Onion Dosa, Anda Onion Dosa, Mendu Vada, Idli, Fried Idli, Utappha, Daal Vada. My fav is Mendu Vada and Onion Dosa and on few lucky days, you can have taste of heaven. Β Β
The place sees visitors from NITIE, IIT, few IT & BPO companies nearby.Β
Maddu Mess is a definite Thumbs Up for people who are insomniac and crazy enough to go out at 4AM and eat or people who have night shifts. And Of course, tot to forget those who wish to experience some real tasty Dosas & Mendu Vadas.
It is advisable to reach as early as possible because the number of maddu-mess-maniac are far more than what the place can afford. So, the waiting queue becomes longer with time and Β Maddu Mess invariably shuts down its operations everyday between 6.30 - 7 AM, because by that time it it out of all raw material for any further preparations.
A life saver place for all the IIT-B students as the place opens @ 4:30 in the morning...
The place is doing a social service since 1978...
Medu vada, Anda dosa and coffee are my personal favourite..
Open at 5 in the morning - check.
Piping hot food - check.
Friendly faces - check.
Anda dosa - check.
I don't think Maddu deserves to be judged as we do other restaurants. Agreed that hygiene freaks would run away at first sight, but if you look at their kitchen - everything's prepared in front of you, served hot, and does not give the impression of a bad place; it's only unfortunate that the location is such. Anyways, it's a family run business, and they constantly keep cooking and serving food, and the moment you're full, you pay up and leave. Seating's a struggle every time - so you may have to wait. As for what to try, if you're a first timer - try everything! My personal favourites are anda (egg) dosa and fried idli, along with tea.
Running since '78, this place is doing some sort of a social service I feel by providing late night hunger pangs solutions (hides face) at dirt cheap prices. Well yes they do, pretty famous between iitans; the family believes in serving quality food and its difficult to get a place.
For us it was difficult to locate but luckily the man himself was standing outside... Took us inside that shady place (really scared the hell out of me for a few seconds).barely 2 typical tapri style tables with no place to sit. We managed to get some space soon. Egg dosa was something new for us; tried that with some amazing freshly prepared tea. Although it was not that exclusive when it came to taste but heyy... What more do expect at 5am! Every time you ask for some hot beverage they'll prepare a fresh one for you. Idli fry, medu wada and idli; couldn't say no to any of the freshly made stuff the family kept offering. Lovely family; got a chance to chit chat with them for a while and got to know their stories.
This is place where one can go only after a night out, opens at 430 in the morning it's hard to reach and cramped inside somewhere in front of YP gate.
Amazing idli, Kadak chai.
Best pace to have dosas/idlis in.powai. very cheap . and very delicious dosas served between 4:30 to 8:30 in the morning. Very clean ambiance especially considering the place where it is located. Thronged by iit and niitie students. This is a great pace to have south indian breakfast
The best dosas in the whole world!
Yes, trust me.
He serves 3 type of Dosa;
Plain, Onion, Egg Dosa. The best Anda (Egg) Dosas in town by him. As add-on to it you get medu wadas & hot idlis too. Everything is self service which is kept on your tables including chatni & sambhar.
1-star deducted only because of the location & timings.
Genuine person with mission to fill hungry tummies with yummy food.
Awesomeness - Egg Dosa, Medu Vada, Fried Idli, Hospitality
Why not 5? Because it's located in a shanty chawl and stinks a lot.
Regards
Ishan
Maddus @ opp I.I.T Powai
This always and will always be one of my favourite joints for late night/early morning snacks if i am around Powai. Varieties include South Indian snacks like Idli, Vada, Dosa, Dal Vada, Anda Dosa(Egg Dosa) etc and all this go well with the freshly made Coffee (bru instant coffee is what they use).
The joint opens at 4am and is on till 10am on weekdays during which you can relish their lovely south indian delicacies mentioned above. Make sure you try out their Anda (egg) dosa and coffee and i bet you won't regret it. Although the place and the way to get there is not easy to locate and is a bit "shabby" but the quality and taste of food you get there is something worth the wait ...
Kindly ignore the cutlery in the photos below* as that's not how it is served there....
One word... Bliss! Whether you are a night crawler or a morning person, this place will soothe your hunger pangs! This place not only serves the regular south Indian cuisine, but will surprise you with innovative cross overs *drum rolls* anda dosa πππ just go already! Thank me later ππ
Support local vendors -
South Indian lady care like family member. Sambar best in Mumbai, vegetables mixed grinder inside Sambar. My plate cost 50rs. Test and price best. 2 idilis 1 vada 1 dal vada.
Cooked inside house in chawl. Hygiene and hospitality best. Must visit and support. Good food for daily.
Tasty South Indian food and amazing value for money. Atmosphere is not good because it is inside a home. And the lath leading to the restaurant is dirty and smelly.
Tasty home made food, available very early in the morning. As a first timer it is very difficult to identify the place. I could able to locate this place on my third attempt. The entrance from the sub road is very narrow and may miss. Ask any locals around for locating it easily. Coming to the food, it was totally worth all those attempts. The tea was not that great, but better.
All time favourite for South indian brkfast, medu Wada is the best they have n other dishes like egg dosa, dosa types, idili, etc.
This place is tailor made for someone wanting good South Indian breakfast to satiate hunger after an all nighter. Located in a small lane and very difficult to find unless you go there with a frequenter. The food is great though and makes you forget all the hassles of finding the place and eating in a dingy area. The sambhar and chutney can do better but the Dosa, idly and vada are done to near perfection.
Famous for really good anda dosa. You can have varieties of dosa's and other south Indian dishes like idli, medu vada and dal vada. Just lacks a good sitting area where we can enjoy the food. But people who wake up and walk or drive at 4:30 in the morning just to have a anda dosa don't mind it much.
Really good south indian snacks. Owner is a very nice person. Good taste; affordable rates. Location is bit tricky. Overall worth the try.
Only South Indian Hotel is very near to IIT Bombay. It is very near to IIT Market gate. Here Dosa, Idli, Vada, all South Indian foods are available with a taste of South Indian home. Every one should try once here. Handling also very nice.
1. Located in a narrow chawl type setting. So if you want 'ambience' then this place is not for you.
2. Place is small but feels like home, because you get to see a Grandmother cooking herself and serving you. You just can't put a price on that feeling.
3. Food was good. Vada was a bit oily, Onion dosa was good, and coffee was nice.
Best place to grab an early south indian breakfast. Located near IIT powai..
Nice place homely location and old lady cooking food in Kerala style can be preferable to Tamil , andhra , Karnataka people ,
Egg dosa
Vada
Idly
Sambar chutney available
Was a regular there in my mumbai days, lip smacking breakfast available 5:00 AM, Though everything in the menu were worth a try but Anda Dosa & Dal wada were too good to miss, looking forward to this place on my next Mumbai visit.
