Bongg food at its best. The test of a good cook is in the simplest dishes (if we have learnt anything from Ratatouille that is :) ) -- the simple dal-bhat-begun-bhaja/aloo posto was completely deliciously comforting. The more adventurous thankuni patar bora was a delight to discover. The duck egg curry was exquisite, so good in fact that for once even the kosha mangsho paled in comparison. The fish fry is also very good -- the crumb coating just right. To end it all with nolen gurer payesh and some really good tea was just the perfect conclusion to a very good meal. Happily recommending it highly.

Don't miss the tea and the boras, whatever you do. There's nothing like them in Delhi. The vegetarian platter was also lovely, and beautifully presented.

Bang in here for authentic and delicious Bengali foods. The price is on the higher side, but it worths it. Parking is a big problem in this area, so plan accordingly. Also the restaurant has only three tables and 8-10 chairs, and no washroom. Plan accordingly :P

Amazing food, highly recommended. I loved the Nolen gur'er payesh. Not had anything like it in ages. Better than my mum's payesh.

Yes please! This is definitely worth bookmarking for a cozy and indulgent Bengali meal done very well.
It is a small sit in place but the meals have a large heart and portions- exactly as all my Bengali grandmothers and aunts! The Bengali Thali was fabulous and each dish stood out- macher jhol, the jhuri bhaja alu or the crispy potato fries and the masoor dal done right. The starters, especially the chop was phenomenal- served fresh with kashundi (a mustard condiment).
The Kosha Mangsho was a hit with my non-Bong hubby. He lapped it up with as many luchhis as he could manage! Nom nom

What can a cosy, 2-table, home style kitchen restaurant set in the backdrop of quirky shahpur jat, with freshly cooked Bengali food not do? Conquer hunger. After the first 20 minutes of banter are over, and you know your food is nowhere close to arriving at the table, you do start to get impatient. The next 20 are spent peering over the kitchen counter hoping for some sign of the food being ready. The next 10 are pretty much spent inside the kitchen helping the lads get food on the table. Rant over.
The Bigg Bong theory is a cute mom-pop restaurant with good authentic bong food. What they haven't managed to get right is the prep and order timing. Secondly, the waiters haven't been taught to mention that the food serves 1 person only. So at the end of those 50 mins when you find yourself with less food than you ordered, you do get pissed.
The mutton Kabiraji was amazing! Thick luscious onion gravy but with little meat. The fish smelled and looked of mustard with pops of seeds that enhanced its flavor. The yellow lentils were simple and the dry potatoes with mustard just as yummy. The baigan bhaja never came.
So if you're looking to have good Bengali food for lunch, park yourselves at this place by breakfast and order a dish a person with some accompaniments. That's the only way you can enjoy the bigg bong theory.

This is one of the rare joints in Delhi that satiated my taste for authentic bangali food. The food is not the wedding hall fare, or has taste optimized to suit a larger population... It is just how it is when made at home, and with that alone, the place scores.
The menu is pretty comprehensive. We tried a Thali with dal, alu posto, another torkari and pabda. The size of pabda hardly did justice to its name, but it was tasty. Jhuri alu bhaja with dal could not taste better even at home. And the kosha mangsho n fulko luchi are absolutely delightful, both together and in their own rights.
The place is too small, though. So you can't bring in a party of more than 4-5. But I'd like to taste more on their menu. A highly recommended place for the Sunday afternoon nostalgia of bangali khabar 😊

Homophonic to one of my favorite sitcom Television show, Big Bongg theory is a good casual dining restaurant that serves traditional items of Bengali cuisines in a fine manner. As I happen to be a diehard fan of the Bengali cuisines especially the sweets, I make sure that I check out almost every place that serves it.

Found this one while randomly checking suggestions on Zomato and decided to visit it thereafter. The place is not very big to provide you with a seating space but I guess that isn’t a problem as far as the food quality is fine, right?

Let us now have a look at the items that I had at Big Bongg Theory-

Aam Ada Sorbat-Had a rich taste of mangoes and a good choice for the beverages.

Kumro Phool- A strange yet likeable Bengali preparation of flower.

Beetroot Cutlet- Healthy and spicy at the same time. Tasted good.

Fish Fry- Been to Bengali restaurant and did not try the fish, doesn’t sound like a nice course of action does it? The fish fry here was fine.

Aloo Posto- A good choice for the vegetarians. Rightly spiced and tasted good.

That was all that I had Big Bongg and found it a decent option for the Bengali cuisine lovers.

Visit it and you won’t be disappointed.

Absolutely loved it. Small place but oh so big on taste! The food was amazing. I am a vegetarian and the chef took extra special care in making me delicacies I would enjoy.

The beetroot cutlet is the right amount of spicy, healthy and crunchy. I hadn't ever eaten a flower before ( I know right?! Bengali cuisine has gems), and Kumro Phool was a food experience to cherish. A quaint and happy place, I highly recommend it. My meat loving friends said their food was so good, if I ever decide to taste meat, they said I should start here.

They also have some splendid tea selections and the drinks are a real treat. They whipped up a special concoction for us, which we relished with absolute delight in between our meal.

Overall: wholesome, super delicious and light food. Total value for money. A must try.

The chef is so humble and sweet, I wish her the very best!

Many a review of Big Bongg Theory in newspapers and magazines kindled a craving in me to try out their Bengali cuisines. I also read about its owner, Anumitra, a passionate food experimentalist and about her credentials. So on one of those days when you choose to give a go by to your lunchbox from home and look for a budget option to satiate the palate, a colleague and I decided to explore the eatery located not too far from our office.

While I googled the map of Shahpur Jat for the eatery, I relied more on my intuition for its location. The perfect definition of haphazard urbanization sits pretty on Shahpur Jat, the latest destination for Delhi’s fashion fraternity. After negotiating the traffic in a winding street amongst the maze of restaurants, fashion-ware vends and numerous offices in a spruced up village, I suddenly located the diminutive outlet of BBT.

Two of us were the only customers in the tiny restaurant with nine seats during peak lunch hour on a weekday. Sadly, Anumitra was away on an official business abroad and her man Friday moved in to jot down our orders. To stick to a simplistic fare, we asked for a portion of ‘niramish tarkari’ (mixed veg), two portions each of ‘macher jhol’ and rice. The mixed veg was a combo (Bengali chochchori) of pumpkin-ridge gourd-long beans (borboti)-radish-brinjal (egg plants) simply cooked using Bengali five spices (panch foron). The dish tasted nice for its basic ingredients and fresh vegetables. The fish preparation was truly home styled with two large pieces of rohu in a light gravy of tomato and cumin seeds.

The food was good for a break but not too great to write home about. Price point and the quantities also left us a little disgruntled. I may have to return to BBT maybe in presence of Anumitra to go by her culinary guidance for a superior experience.

Read some great reviews in Zomato and decided to try this place as we wanted homely food. It is a cute little place with seating capacity for nine only – three tables with three seats each and a glass see through wall with the kitchen on the other side. The dĂ©cor is minimalistic yet interesting with little quirk like menus in the form of post cards. Everything mentioned in the menu was however not available perhaps due to special festival menu on offer on the occasion of Bengali New Year. Besides, as we were little late to arrive for dinner, few items were already exhausted. The lady taking orders was very pleasant and made useful recommendations.

We opted for aamadar shorbot (mango-ginger zinger), leaf bora (coriander leaf fries) for starter. For main dish we opted for mutton curry, chicken curry and fish curry accompanied with rice and tawa roti. The mango-ginger zinger was pleasant though a bit mild to my taste. Leaf bora was very very tasty. Mutton curry with potatoes was spicy yet light, perfect accompaniment for rice. Chicken curry was cooked with flavor of lime and delicious. Fish curry (pabda) with cumin and ginger was again light yet tasty. So our requirement of a homely, tasty yet light on stomach meal was totally fulfilled. However, we were disappointed as there was no dessert available.

Service was good but slow. I don’t know whether it is always like that or because of the festive demand.

Overall a very satisfying meal. We are definitely going back and recommending.

We went to this small eatery at Shahpur Jat a few months ago for lunch, for the first time. The premises are rather small with just about three tables. The furniture is a soothing white and we particularly noticed the nicely done black and white photographs of vegetables, on the walls.

Service: The young lady running the place was friendly and gave advice on our short-listed food items, and was overall friendly and nice to talk too without being overly intrusive. The food is cooked in a kitchen just next to the seating area and walls are partially of glass. From what we could see, the staff in the kitchen were neatly turned out and the place looked clean and hygienic. I also appreciated the fact that though the kitchen was in close proximity we did not hear loud noises from the kitchen with the staff shouting or talking loudly or too much banging of pots and pans.

Food: We ordered a baingan veg thali which came with rice, daal and begun bhaja fry. The food was very lightly spiced, and tasted fine, although the daal was a bit of a disappointment not being properly blended (I have a number of Bengali friends who regularly cook food for me and realized that this daal was a rather simple regular fare and not exactly what I usually associate the Bengali way of cooking it.), and had tad too much salt, the rice and eggplant fry were both okay. As main non-vegetarian accompaniments we also ordered 'sorshe mach' - which is the quintessential Bengali dish of fish in mustard flavoured curry - which was excellently flavoured and very enjoyable, the gravy sauce was thick and tasted fabulous, and the fish was cooked just right. I don't usually like fish curries which have strong taste but this was perfect even for a picky fish eater like me. In addition we ordered mutton jhol with alu. Light flavours in the gravy but fine enough for the palette. Out of all the dishes, the best we found was the fish and will definitely order it again (tip - add lemon juice to make it even more delicious than usual, which is what I did!). We topped off the lunch with misti dhoi for dessert - this was excellent - thick and well set, and both me and my friend liked it.

All in all, I was happy to discover this place. I like the laid back but clean atmosphere of the place, and the service which was friendly but not intrusive and we were left to enjoy the meal in peace. I did think that for the portion size of the vegetarian dishes, the cost was definitely on the higher side, whereas the cost for the non-veg dishes seemed fine. Nevertheless, My overall rating would be 'GOOD' (somewhere less than very good but definitely above average) and I would recommend heading to this place if you would like clean, tasteful Bengali food without over-use of spices, and enjoy eating your meal in peace and quiet.

Unfortunately this outlet does not deliver to my locality, but if it did, I would definitely be ordering regularly.

As a food blogger, it’s exciting to eat out often, meet new people, try different cuisines and experience a range of distinct flavours. However, sometimes repetition can make things mundane, when everything starts to taste similar. Off late, after visiting an Italian, Chinese or other contemporary food eatery, I would come back home and wonder how differently can I write about a burger, pasta or a chicken curry. To my respite, as things turned gloomy, I happened to visit Big Bongg Theory.

A very small restaurant located in Shahpur Jat serving Bengali food. The food tastes good but the prices are high in comparison to the ambience and food portions which are very small and not at all value for money. The food no doubt tastes good and authentic. Service is pretty slow too . But one can visit or call in for home delivery if wanting to go in for a authentic flavours bengali food . They can do well if at least the portions are sufficient even if they don't reduce the prices.

If you want decent bengali food which is easy on the pocket this is the place for you. The menu is limited, but then it is better to have a small good menu than a horrible huge menu. The combo meals are a good option. The aloo posto was tasty as was the mustard fish. The chicken was a little disappointing and the jhurjhure aloo was nice but a little over salty. Portion size is average but some may find it on the smaller size. The average cost of the meal I had with my friends was INR 500 per person. Overall experience, decent food, warm friendly staff (they allowed us to fiddle around and play our own music) but just too small a space.

A tiny little place (3 covers) in Shahpur Jat, serving authentic Bengali food; its is a pure delight! Simplistic and minimalistic, this place is unpretentious and earnest. With simple white furniture and green planters, here food does the talking.

Excited to eat and craving for rich Bengali food, I ordered a Bengali Extravagant Thali, Baigun Bhaja and Aamadar Sorbot.

The arrival of Aamadar sorbot, brought me back from nostalgia and I could hardly hold my excitement. The drink was a great mix of Mango and Ginger, a perfect ode to the Mango season.

Then after a long wait, my non-veg extravagant thali arrived on the table. An assortment of Alurdum (potato), Luchi (puri/bread), Shorshe Maach (fish curry cooked in mustard oil and seeds), Mutton Jhol (mutton curry cooked in spices and potato), rice and spicy mango chutney.

Each dish tasted distinct and with each bite my eyes were filled with tears of joy.

The soft luchis with spicy Alurdum, the pungent mustard curry of the juicy fish and thick mutton curry’s aloo were just beyond exceptional. However, the real joy was Baigun Bhaja. One of my most favourite memories from Kolkata, I would relish Baigun Bhaja with Khichudi or even with Khajur Chutney.

And then I had reached the last leg of my meal. I finished off by licking the bowl full of umami flavours of the Mango chutney. The red chilli (powder), chunks of sweet and sour mango, had been cooked together wonderfully and looked divine as well.

However, it wasn’t over yet. I couldn’t walk out of a Bengali restaurant without having Payesh. This Bengali Kheer (sweetened milk cooked with rice) is made with gur or jaggery. The taste of jaggery was subtle, the milk was densed and each grain of rice was well cooked. It was perfectly sweet and delicious.

The food had been a pure joy.

Visit this cafe and treat yourself with some delicious Bengali food.

My rating of food at big bongg theory averages out to 4.4/5
In a nutshell:

A super tiny 9 seater restaurant that serves outstanding bengali ‘home’ food , at times with a twist.

Short description - in case ur in a hurry:

As I mentioned in my earlier reviews on Bengali food, there is two broad types - Small quantities of food cooked at homes vs. large quantities of food cooked by professional cooks (thakurs). Most good bengali food restaurants serve food that is close to what the thakurs make.

Food at Big Bongg Theory was more like excellent home cooked food. Most of the food was subtle, not on the face, delicate, yet YUMM to the core & full of flavors. While some were exactly how the original recipe is, some others had interesting twists to the original.

Big Bongg Theory restaurant is actually a shop in Shahpur Jat, split into two parts – one for the see thru kitchen & the other being the Dining Room. I don’t know how the dining area originally was, but the use of wood & glass doors makes that small room get a lot of natural light & gives it a bigger feel.

The Dining room had some interesting photographs on the wall.

There was a small cupboard with some books kept on top of them.

The Owner came in a few times to speak to guests, discuss order and we cud also see her actively involved in the kitchen. Not just giving directions, but doing things on her own. Hats off. That’s amazing passion
.

The furniture was heavy wooden furniture.

Menu card was outstanding. They looked like old post cards. Each postcard had a particular section – like starter veg, starter non veg, main course veg etc etc.

Loved reading the one liners at the bottom of the postcard.

Service was by only one person. She made us feel at home and helped us take decision on menu as well.

Food was thoroughly enjoyable. Loved it.

Detailed description - in case u have the time to NJOY reading:

Chalkumro bora totally unexpected. Buttery feel in terms of texture but watery and Juicy. Thin layer of mustard in the middle. Crispy on the outside. The outer layer was more like a tempura. Rate it 4.5/5

Kumro o dhonepata bora was another unique creation. Unlike most leaf bora s ( vada / pakora), this one did not have the leaf randomly mixed to the batter. Here the leaves were single layer, flat and covered with a crisp translucent layer. The lines of the leaf cud b clearly seen , with the kind of transparency.

The bora was crisp, had perfect seasoning and retained the full taste and Flavor of the leaf ( pumpkin leaf).

Rate it 4.5/5 again.

The third dish we tried was Phish fry. No it's not some unknown thing but a fish fry, written that way to mimic the Bengali pronounciation. This fish fry was different than all Anglo Bengal originated fish fries I have ever had.

This did not have the usual crumb fried dark brown outer layer. It rather had a thin, light brown, crisp outer layer that accentuated the taste and flavor of the fish.

The fish was layery, soft and juicy. Loved it.

Rate it 4.5/5 again.

Aamada shorbot was nice. It had flavours of Aam aada ( a kind of ginger that has flavours of mango). The shorbot had very tiny pieces of aamada floating in it as well. Quite refreshing I must say. Rate it 3/5.

We also ordered Mint shorbot - this was probably the only item that I did not get. I don't know if the proportions went bad but it ended up tasting like electral water that is had as an ORS.

The drink had a punch though, what is called 'jhhaj' in Bangla.

I rate this dish 1/5

For main course we started with

Boal maacher jhol - gravy of boal fish. Boal is s fish with the Middle bone only and that makes it easy for all to have. The fish was excellent in itself and so was the preparation. The fish was YUMM and full of fish fat that added to the yummness.

The gravy was somewhat hot, the spices made their presence felt but still the gravy managed to be not 'on the face'. It was just wow. Rate it 4.75/5

We also tried

Mangsho. Gravy of slow cooked mutton. There was a tinge of sweetness, the gravy was thick and somewhat hit. Since meat and gravy was slow cooked together, the flavours of meat entered the gravy and flavours of spices entered the meat.

The meat was super soft and really YUMM.

Loved it and rate it 4.5/5

We tried musur Dal. Just as simple and good as it is at any bengali household. Not sure people used to spicy & thick kaali daal etc wud appreciate this subtle daal in the first go. Rate it 4.25/5

We ordered Jhuri aloo bhaja with the daal – deep fried potato matchsticks. They were super crisp, perfectly salted and just too good. Rate them 4.5/5 as well.

For dessert we had Mishti doi. We asked if it was made there or it was bought from outside. We were told it is made there. It tasted more like the good thick mishti doi that shops sell. This was unlike the ‘made at home’ feel which every other item had.

Rate this 4/5

Overall rating of food & beverages at big bongg theory averages out to 3.9/5

Overall rating of just food averages out to 4.4/5

I wud surely go here again to try other food items. Wud look forward to revisiting.

A very small joint keeping the niche of bengali food in the way it is niche food. The list of food is extensive but it is based on what is prepared that day .Go for the chicken and mutton options listen to the owner who helps you on your culinary experience.
Fresh homely and happy food. We ordered the mango ginger zinger , not that zingy but sweetly sour.
In appetiser we ordered chicken fingers which was chicken breast flattened and battered up to be fried served with sweet sauce ( the Chinese type at stores) and chilli chicken big pieces succulent enough for us.
Then we proceeded to the main course on the owners recommendation we had mutton curry very spicy and heavy with luchi the bong fried bread.
As I visited with a bong friend he enjoyed his feast while I was full and ticked the place off as an once of culinary experiment with an acceptable time.

4.5 because I ordered in, so this is only about the food. Sorse Mach, Fried fish, Begun Bhaja, and Mishti Doi. All in all Rs 866.
I don't think I could have spent the money better. Surprisingly good food, considering it was packed and delivered rather than eaten at the restuarant. The fish was fresh, not overdone, and flavourful. The Begun Bhaja is possibly the best I've tasted in the city--and that includes the CR Park haunts. I'll definitely be ordering from here more often.
Negatives, none really--it does take some effort to get through to the lady who takes the orders over the phone and there is some reiteration required. But the food's well worth the effort!

If you believe in enjoying the best of seasonal variety of Bengali food this place is a must try. Most restaurants try to maintain a standard menu all round the year and when BBT promised to serve its clients seasonal menu I was indeed sceptical.

I thought this was impossible but the hardworking team of BBT has been a pleasant surprise. They have been serving a delectable spread and I have tasted winter, spring and summer in BBT’s food.

In winter I tried a wonderful shuntki fish preparation with broad beans and other winter vegetables which was not repeated at all. I knew this dish was extremely popular as the restaurant ran out of the dish when I appeared late for my booking.

The chef made it a point to call one of my friends when she had
cooked this dish for friends. Another wonderful dish she prepared during winters was Bombay duck with winter vegetables- a ligh stew. Spring is a wonderful time in Bengal to enjoy small fish and the chef created quite a wonderful spread with tin kata machh and many others. The charm of the place lies in its cosiness that the team of BBT puts together to enjoy the food with wonderful music. Minimalist décor, the team really lets the food speak for themselves. I am waiting for the chef to announce the hilsa spread and this place is a wonderful find for any fish lovers. If you are going for lunch I would recommend you to order the veg thali ( single portion) and add veg or non veg dishes. If you are a luchi fan try it with a combination of begun bhaaja and mangsho and you must try out the fish fry. True to its seasonal nature the coating of a wonderful thin fillet of Kolkata Bhetki is coated keeping in mind the mercury levels of the city and fried to perfection. Another recommendation would be summer drink. If you are allergic to aerated drinks try out the summer drinks made from mango, mango ginger before they change the menu to celebrate monsoon.

 My recommends

1. Fish Fry

2. Luchi and Kasha Mangsho ( served with a wonderful piece of potato that melts in your mouth along with mutton)

3. Prawn Malai curry ( you can smell the freshly squeezed coconut milk)

4. Catch of the day

5. Am ada sarbat ( available now)

** The fish dishes are prepared from the scratch after you order. Please be patient to enjoy a light stew served with vegetables and lentil cakes. Please book a table to avoid rush. It’s a nine seater place.

This place was recommended to me by my Bong foodie friends. I live in Gurgaon and for the past few years there has been a proliferation of Bong food places across NCR. So let me begin with what makes this place exceptional. The place run by Chef Anumitra is special as she cooks her dishes with the help of her kitchen staff. The appeal of the place lies in the personal touch of the chef and her team. The place is neat and clean in terms of the look. White interiors! No one can go wrong with that right! The place is a perfect place to enjoy a meal with friends and family ( not exceeding nine ) as they have three tables. I was introduced to this place as a friend was celebrating his anniversary dinner here. He took his parents and invited two of us. My friend had made special request and we had the luxury of enjoying BBT food and ambience for three hours at a stretch. My friend had pre-ordered a line of dishes and each of them tasted exceptionally good barring the sweet dish- payesh. I am not a huge fan of payesh so its better not to comment. But I told myself, well its the second month and hence the ingredients are fresh and well cooked. Few weeks back I ventured out on a hot summer afternoon near Green Park and thought of grabbing some rice and fish curry. So I drove down to Shahpur Jat. I went there and ordered the dish of the day. I love fish across water bodies. The chef suggested me to try out tin kata machh. The tiny silver fish was cooked with ridge gourd ( another summer vegetable) with a hint of kalojeere ( another whole spice) used in households across Bengal to make fish curry, fry vegetables. I am a little sceptical of trying out small fishes in restaurants. This was great food! The taste complemented the texture. It was not drowning with oil. It tasted like home cooked food. I packed two pieces of fish fry. The chef warned me that the texture will not be the same when I will get home. I assured her that for the love of Kolkata Bhetki I am willing to let go of the texture and voila what a splendid coating BBT had invented for their summer edition of fish fry. The light fragrance of mint added the perfect punch to BBT’s fish fry after a long day.

My recommends: Fish Fry, all Fish items. Special care is taken to add vegetables to fish stew.

As our am ada sarbat was served a couple who had just walked in requested the server to repeat the same drink for their table. The slight fragrance of mango ginger and the tangy punch of the drink was so refreshing that after a sip from my friend I ordered the same. Our fritters arrived in some time and what arrived in front looked pleasing. The chef had taken care not to waste away the stalk and coat it in a fashion so that it looked like a bunch of trees
As we munched away to glory, my friend was curious to know what leaf was served. We called for the chef and she told us that the leaf is thankuni pata- a Bengali staple around this time of the year. Usually used in veg jhol or with light fish stew. The leaf she also added is bitter and hence needs delicate treatment. She tore a piece of the leaf for us to try and we were left surprised. Wow

I told myself that I am going to return here with my vegan friends to try out the veg jhol and rice during lunch time. There are a couple of options for vegans here. Their veg thali can be customised for vegan friends. I also packed a plate of begun bhaja ( fried slice of brinjal ) for my dinner. Though I must confess it tastes best when served piping hot as it lost its texture in its ride back home but nevertheless this Bong place lets the food talk and I will recommend this place for all those who enjoy lightly spiced snacks and home made drinks. Kudos to BBT team for serving drinks made from seasonal ingredients like mango, mango ginger.

This tiny little eatery serves up some huge flavors! Run by a young woman who is passionate about food and knows her ingredients, the flavors will get your taste buds singing. The best part? She serves only seasonal food - which means you get fresh ingredients and weather appropriate food. If you go during summer, ask for the amada drink - it's brilliant! We also tried the leaf fritters, fish fry, shorshe maach & malai prawns - all of which were an absolute treat! This place is marked as one of my favorites!

Brilliant food. The spices are optimum, the flavours are fully teased out. Not unnecessarily rich or spicy. This is Bengali home food at its best. We ordered Alu-Posto, Daal, Alubhaja, Pabda Maachh, and Kawsha Mangsho. Each dish was better than the other. And the Aam-aadar shawrbot in the end was the icing on the cake. We need more of such places. Oh! Calcutta is overpriced. 6 Ballygunge Place is there only in Calcutta. Bhajohori Manna is ok-ish. But the food at Big Bongg Theory is simply amazing. Plus it doesn't hurt your pocket. Compared to Delhi restaurants, it is actually quite cheap, considering the brilliant quality of their food. I recommend it very highly.

Great ambiance!! Awesome Music!! Tasty food!!

Well, my knowledge about Indian food is limited. but I must say I really enjoyed the food here.

When I explained the chef I do not enjoy spicy food, she gave me a fish dish which was full of flavor but low on spice.

I will tell all my friends to visit here for excellent Indian food.

Hello everyone,

Its been 7-8 months that I have left Kolkata, working here in Delhi. Whenever I miss home, I search for Bengali food. Finally yesterday I found the destination of my craving for homely Bengali food at "Big Bongg Theory"..

I started with Aam-aadar Shorbot & fish fry, it was excellent..

Then Kasha Mangsho (mutton curry) & Luchi, I will rate 10 out of 10 this combination..

Then Rice & macher jhol (fish curry), I couldn't eat as I was full by then, so I packed it home. I ate that almost after 5 hours, it reminded me my mother's food..

I'm definitely going back to "Big Bongg Theory" again, yet to try prawn malai curry, Duck egg curry & lots..

Regards,

Abhinav

What place, what food! I had to treat a Bong friend from Mumbai with some good Dilli wala Bong food the obvious choice was Oh Calcutta, or CR Park but a friend recommended this place and we went there and fell in love with the place. The Chef/ Owner is really passionate about her food. Keep it up! We will be back soon.

Tiny place, with tiny tables, 3 in total, but every thing served with big heart. go for it folks, the food may not always be consistent but the sheer magic of this place is the owner's vision. Real tea served in real cups and teapot. Food cooked according to what can be sourced on the day. Best of luck.

Was craving fish curry and rice and found the perfect spot. Its a small place with 3 tables. The owner is the chef and she cooks delicious homemade food. I had pabhda fish in mustard curry. The fish was moist and flaky and curry was superb. The tamarind sherbet was refreshing.
Waiting to go back again.

Hi! I’m new in Delhi. So I came to Big Bongg Theory with my friends for Sunday Dinner. All of us loved the food here, specially the Phish fry & Luchi - mutton curry. Great ambiance with awesome music, tiny though but well organized restaurant. Owner cum chef Anumitra is a sweetheart, such a warm person. From my side big thumbs up & best wishes to BBT. I’m definitely coming back here again

I came from Bengal. Bengali food is my daily habit and I have researched well about this regional cuisine. I went to Big bongg theory to check the representation of Bengali food in Delhi. The place is small but cozy. I tried fish fry, prawn orley, leaf bora, luchi, fish curry and rice. Surprisingly, I found that the food in Big bongg theory is more authentic than you get to taste in Bengal. All the recipes are well researched but the representation has no pretention. This level of simplicity can only be achieved through years of practice, like classical music or dance. I am definitely coming back to BBT to slake my craving for comfort food and I recommend this place to all the food connoisseurs of Delhi.

Bengalis are known to take their cuisine and the preparation of the food very seriously. And, Anumitra Ghosh Dastidar - The Chef behind The Big Bongg Theory is no exception!

A recently started establishment - Chef Anumitra informed that the place opened just three months back, this place has the potential to do well in the long-run. Tucked away in one corner of Shapur Jat - which is known more for its alleys of fashion stores and knick knacks - the place is small, almost stark in decor and yet the meal is what makes all the difference. It is as if one is having a meal among friends at home!

A Ph.D scholar whose love and passion for cooking turned her into a restauranteur - Anumitra brings authenticity, variety and the art of blending the spices of Bengali cuisine to the forefront.

We ordered the very traditional items - fish fry, dal bora (small cakes of lentil fried) and a lgreen eaf bhaja (a delicious fried leafy vegetable - almost like a Tempura), Pabda Jhol( a fish dish) with steamed rice, kasha mangso (mutton curry cooked the Bengali style), begun bhaja, luchi and an utterly delicious payesh as the dessert - to complete a meal. The meal is to be had in a leisurely way.

Food was tasty, simple but, well prepared.

This is a no frills place in its present state - no drinks or soft drinks even. But, every great place has similar beginnings.

Trained in Japanese cuisine as well - Anumitra believes that food must be served in its more puritan form to create the niche which she is seeking.

Well done and this place will surely win many hearts in the culinary scene of Delhi!

PS. A bit expensive though!

The best Bengali food in Delhi by a long shot. Started with some prawns orley and was pleasantly surprised to find that the batter was super thin and one could taste the prawns. Later, opted for the non veg extravagance set lunch. The mustard fish was flavourful without being pungent and the mutton was perfectly tender. Oil free luchis and alurdom were a delicious combination as suggested by the chef. And even though this was extravagant, it didn't feel like my stomach was burdened with boulders. Definitely coming back here again!

The best place to get Bengali food in Delhi, better than anything that CR Park or Oh! Calcutta could offer, and a lot cheaper than any fine dining place in the city. The fish-fry and prawn-orley are out of this world. The macher jhol with kalojire cannot taste any better. I died after having the prawn malai curry and went straight to heaven. The karaishutir kachuri and alurdom too tasted divine. The cosy and intimate set-up is perfect for lazy weekends.

For some of us who have been away for long from the wonders of Bengali kitchens, BBT is where our search must end! The food was so different from Bengali fare I tried elsewhere in Delhi and other cities in India. The koraishutir kochuri (paste of pea stuffed in puri) took me back to magical winter afternoons in Kolkata many, many days back when our plates would be heaped with kochuri and our fingers would be smeared with the delightful pea stuffing. The leaf fritter and beet chop were class apart as starters. But my pick would be the smooth prawn orly --- soft, juicy and of unique flavour. There is not much to say about Kolkata's quintessential fish fry --- except that it took me straight to heaven --- well, just metaphorically! :) The Kosha mangsho was perfect --- not too spicy and never too less. Finally the journey of my heart and stomach ended with payesh, a sweet nothing of milk and rice. Thank you, miss chef extraordinaire! :)

Imagine a full-on Bangali who has been around town (and the world) so that (s)he can appreciate shaaker ghawnto with as much relish as salsa verde or sambuska. That's the cuisine of  BIG BONGG THEORY, personified.

Despite the allusion to the American sitcom namesake, there is no attempt of Americanising / Punjabi-fying or any other feeble attempts at fusion or pandering to popular tastes.

It is unfussy, intimate, authentic Bengali Cuisine at its best, thanks to Chef Anumitra Ghosh Dastidar, who has earned her many stripes at places as diverse as Chittraranjan Park and Japan.

So that a 'Shawbjnata Bangali' will have as much a good time here as someone who is encountering  the cuisine for the first time in life.

Among the highlights of our meal we had bori diye shaak bhaja, mocha paturi (weekend special) and quintessential mangsher jhol. We can't recall even a single dish that failed to make the cut.

Book your table this weekend and don't forget to plunder the imli golis that come with the bill, on your way out. (which we did).

If you love Bengali food, this place is it. I have been a regular customer here, it is the only place in the city when you get excellent quality food at affordable prices: much better than anything you will find at CR Park, or Oh Calcutta. We have tried their fries, bhajas (veg., mocha, fish, and various others), plus fish and mutton dishes (jhol, paturi). The place is small (hopefully they will expand soon), but extremely well-maintained and spotless, and the service is great!

Big Bongg Theory is a unique place. We are frequent visitors to India with a passion for Bengali cuisine, and  this is the best place we have found to enjoy it. In this small, perfectly kept restaurant, you can appreciate the care of the detail, the freshness of the ingredients, the love for original recipes. We tried kochuris, the fish soup, shorshe maach,  and the gurer payesh. They were all exquisite.  No single flavor gets lost or confused  with others. Anumitra is not only an excellent cook but a remarkable person, and the pleasure of a  conversation with her makes a visit to the Big Bongg Theory much more than a dinner.

Absolutely loved it! The food was amazing. I am a vegetarian and the chef took extra special care of making me delicacies I would enjoy. The beetroot cutlet is the right amount of spicy, healthy and crunchy. I hadn't ever eaten a flower before ( I know right?! Bengali cuisine has gems), and Kumro Phool was a food experience to cherish. A quaint and happy place, I highly recommend the place. My meat loving friends said their food was so good, if i ever decide to taste meat, they said I should start here. The chef is so humble and sweet, I wish her the very best!
