Wonderfully unpretentious little place that serves honest Kerala cuisine. Skip the dosas and idlis and go for the light thaali, the meat or egg Kerala-style roasts, fish curry, and parottas. You'll also get decent water buffalo dishes, such as curries, fry, or masala. Just call for "erachi"!

Don't expect much of an ambiance as this is a humble place that's fashioned after the rice hotels of Southern India. The cheap prices add to the appeal. Highly recommended for foodies who prefer taste over fanciness.

Dosas are alright. I quite like their platter - which is super affordable and tastes good. However, the parrotas, chicken masala and curry. Superb. Right quantity, right taste.

The experince of eating there is superb. I somehow feels like a little home. Like you're sitting in your Mallu friend's room, with a little malayalam T.V. blaring out, uncle reading his newspaper.

A must visit, if you happen to visit Gautam Nagar.

For south indian taste one the best local joint. Restaurants ambience is a bit dull but for students it is kind of perfect and equally busy.

I was happy to hear a south Indian restaurant around here. So I was excited to go here. But to be frank, the food was not up to the mark. I love spicy food. But spicing up every single food was a big let down. The taste factor was a big issue to me. And yeah it was under staffed too. So be prepared for them, if you plan to visit here.

Nostalgia.
We have been frequenting this nondescript place called South Cafe in delhi since 12 years though the visits have reduced since moving to Gurgaon. I am surprised that the taste, menu, furniture, the owner almost nothing has changed over the years. South Cafe located in the bylanes of Gautam Nagar is a no fancy, tiny eatery frequented by students and interns living in the area.
Today we packed some dinner on the way back and it was delicious . Mutton pepper roast (150rs) perfectly cooked drowned in the peppery kerala flavours with appams is just fingerlicking good. On hubby's insistence also parceled buff roast (95rs) which was equally delicious. For those who enjoy non vegetarian kerala cuisine and and no frill experience do make a visit.

I've always been familiar with Delhi as my grandparents used to live here and we used to come here for holidays. But I started my formal innings living here in 1996 with my first job with Hotel Ashok as a Chef Trainee. There were five of us - Kishore Hedaoo, Vijay Nair, Jasbir Singh, Seemant Raju and Sanjay Dasari, the band of brothers, who used to stay in Gautam Nagar and we basically lived and enjoyed those carefree days together. One of our fond memories of Gautam Nagar was eating meals at South Cafe, a small Kerala place which'd opened in the same year as we'd shifted there

What I really like about South Cafe back then and even now is that the flavours of Kerala have been maintained. But this's a very well priced outlet, serving unlimited meals now at ₹70 ( in thousands days, if I remember correctly, it used to be ₹20 or 25)

The meals were always fab and we were briefly banned in between because we used to come and have a full days meal from that one unlimited meal. Four full sized helpings of rice at times 😊 We were young lads with big appetites and little money

Gautam Nagar has always been a place full of students and young working professionals on a budget and South Cafe has done well to cater to them. The secret to their success, I've realised is the use of local seasonal vegetables like Tinda, etc (which's unheard of in Kerala) to replace traditional veggies of the cuisine, without compromising of taste or quality. The non veg stuff they do is also fab and the Egg Roast that they do is quite tasty. Though the Buff and Chicken Roasts are nice too

South Cafe is a small space and not fancy at all. The plaster's peeling off the walls in some spots and needs looking into, but their food though not outstanding, has remained consistent and authentic, over the years

South Cafe is a small Cafe but big enough to satisfy my hunger cravings at a very pocket friendly price. Generally crowded with students of nearby colleges, one has to wait for a table during lunch time. But a definite worth the wait. Only tried the chicken masala dosa and the egg masala dosa. Very different and yummy ones. Surely coming back. Are you?

South cafe is a bench mark for all the kids staying and studying in and around hauz khas. Everyone has tried this place one or the other time while their stay here. Its not a very popular hub, but belive me the underdogs live by it. Try the varied menu of dosas here, I m sure you will like it !

This place can be aptly called 'a hole in the wall'. A tiny outlet with few tables, this is a cheap option to satiate your hunger. Serving size is large, as compared to other such restaurants. Buff biryani and buff masala are very tasty, containing only muscle and no fat. But the biryani lacks cashew and raisins, which are usually there in a Kerala biryani. Their porottas are nice. Prawn masala is average. Fish fry is very nice, and cheap too. Ambience and service are not so nice (read bad). The best thing is that you can get Kerala snacks like papad, sharkaravaratti etc. too.

It's a tiny unappealing joint inside Gautam Nagar that does not attempt to impress with their ambience, but purely through their food. A classic Kerala restaurant where you get every vegetarian and non vegetarian Kerala preparation from breakfast to lunch to dinner, at extremely affordable prices. The kind of place you can go very frequently. I pick my ghee rice and fish curry from here almost every Sunday afternoon.

Located in gautam nagar, South Cafe specializes in South Indian delicacies.
Food items are quite affordable;I have tried their dosas once and found it too oily. Recommended food items their special thali and chicken items. What's more, you can also buy banana chips, jackfruit chips, murukku, pickles, and other South Indian snacks at south cafe.
Biggest Drawback: the Staff members are not attentive.

A very small place that might be difficult to locate but south cafe compensates that by serving some interesting food that is not your quintessential South Indian food. The food is delicious and easy on the pockets too, can't say much about the hygiene though. They have a wide variety of Dosas including a section of non vegetarian dosas!

We ordered prawn masala, egg roast with porotta. Porotta was somewhat similar to the North Indian laccha parantha and was delicious. Egg roast was a simple dish but delectable with loads of tomatoes and onions. We have never seen a cafe serving a prawn dish worth Rs 120! The quantity of all the dishes was enough for two.

The spicy and coconutty flavour of the Sambhar was smashing, but what pleasantly surprised me was the deliciousness of Chicken filling in the dosa. Perfectly cooked and seasoned with black pepper, salt and onions, the tender shredded chicken inside a crispy dosa, is sure to bowl you over. Don’t stop yourself from dipping into the coconut chutney, which was just as delicious.

Breathe in, take a lathi and smash up your 4x4 tell your children, your loved ones everything is going to be OK. Sell the remains to a metal recycling plant. Proceed with your loved ones to the world's premier public transport system, get off at Green Park and use those limbs beneath your hips to traverse the roads in a way unknown before, by foot. At first take it easy, it's been a while. Wonder along Gautum Nagar road, over the nala bridge, and take a left. On the corner you'll find a Malayali place called South Cafe. Eat, eat, eat. It's a small place in Gautam Nagar, the pricing is very pocket friendly, and the owners are polite and friendly. The food items I really like are their Mutton fry, Fish Fry, Mutton Biryani and Chicken Dosa.

Such an amazing little tiny gem, that conjures up the most awesome treats from God's own country. Where else would the menu have a delightful "non-veg" dosas section? And a choice of your favourite meat either stewed, roasted, fried or done masala style?

Go for the buff masala, truly outstanding with the gentle punch of spice, and perfectly tender meat, and team it up with their sturdy appams.

Veggies- worry not, you can pick from ultimate comfort food style veggie stews, kormas and if you are lucky, the kadala curry.

The place is a bit spartan, but the pricing will surely lighten your mood, and not your pocket. Perfect for a hassle-free meat fix.

If I am ever hung for treason someday and the jail warden asks me for my last wish, I will say 'One meat fry and two porothas from South Cafe in Gautam Nagar'. 'Meat fry' is buffalo meat fry of course - since 1994, it is illegal to serve beef in Delhi, Punjab and Haryana; though the smarter Haryanvis exempt 'cows killed in self-defence'.
I've been going to South Cafe for 12 years but never remember the name, it's so low profile; perhaps the name is an accidental pun.
I discovered it through Mallu friends visiting Delhi, during the 'International Film Festivals' at Siri Fort in the early 00s, before they moved to Goa. I remember I came here the first time after watching a Tarkovsky film, and the Mallus were in ecstasies about a 5-minute scene where a tap dripped for 5 minutes. (The next film was a Brad Pitt-starrer, The Fight Club.)
The South Cafe neighbourhood is a typical Delhi 'village' (there are nearly 400 in the city), ugly brick-and-cement-and-illegal-electricity-wires slapped together, popular with poor students from other cities.
There's also the traditional Kerala fish, chicken, mutton, and vegetarian at South Cafe, the average price being Rs 60. The furniture is three wooden tables with faded Formica, and the napkins are A4 newspaper cutouts, pinned together (not available on Thursdays, when the newspaper cutter doesn't come). The service is excellent by my standards, which means they might mistakenly give you something you didn't order, which could turn out to be a better choice. The music is whatever's playing on a Mallu TV channel, the small TV perched on a broken iron frame in a corner (it used to be perched above the cashier's table, just above the cashier's head, better sense prevailed).
I was surprised to find this place at Zomato, though not surprised to see the very few Likes and Comments - this place doesn't fit into Zomato, into the world of mobile apps on smartphones.
Thinking of moving here from my usual Costa, because I am getting a little tired of the body hugs, the air kisses, the entrepreneurs with Apple laptops - the only entrepreneurs in Gautam Nagar are milkmen and grocers.
But I am digressing. An excellent meal was had last night, in the wonderful company of some bright young friends doing excellent work in Indian villages, and I look forward to going back.

No , you aren't mallu foodie enough if you havent - circumambutated this low profile high on taste ...

i am veggie but completely vibe with the carnivarous passions of my down south pal and north eastern friends ...and they swear by south cafe. I personally do like their appams, kadala curry , stew ....though the tam bram in me is not too inclined towards their dosas , but i find their sambar, currys simple, basic and that tasting real good- but it is the non veg which is the game changer here ...
the place is very basic - much like a road side chai coffee restaurant in south and which is what keeps it so accessible ...

rates are really affordable and works well as take away or home delivery as well

oh joys of living in gautam nagar -

A regular for south indian foodies in Gautam Nagar, I visit the place whenever my pocket is ringing the empty bell. For the prices they offer, I would rate each of the food, service and ambience - 5/5. Try especially the chicken biryani, absolutely delightful.
Thinking about it again, some people like me actually do like the this kind of place. It looks like a laid back place, not bothered by competition and modernisation, still stuck in its small dingy existential being. The place takes care of the basics in taste and service and let people go on with their lives and conversations without creating too much of an appearance :)

The place is very cheap. 3 of us had our dinner for a total of around 300 bucks, including 2 chicken dishes.
The place is quite stark, no frills. Don't expect niceties. Service is decent, though erratic. However, definitely worth a few visits.
Food is decent, a little oily, but great value for money.
We had chicken roast, which was a delight, and chicken 65, which was a bit of a disappointment, turning out to be like regular tandoori chicken (not bad though) rather than genuine chicken 65. Thali was decent, but again not so genuine, accompanied with a north indian daal.

Been here a number of time. Especially for their parothas. It reminds of Laccha paratha in Kolkata, but this variation is much softer. It perfectly combines with Mutton roast or mutton fry. The filter coffee is also worth trying to end the feast.. The service is quick, the owner and staff are cordial and moreover they assist you in placing a perfect order as per your taste. What more does a customer want. They have two sitting areas in INA market itself. Very easy to locate. Right opposite Delhi Haat INA, in the centre of INA market. Just 20 steps from the metro station. A must try place in Delhi for every non veg lover.

The best place to get Kerala food in Delhi. Very affordable, in fact, in the same amount in which we get dishes from Kerala. They've everything from home, from puttu and kadala curry to pazhampori and beef fry. The service is awesome. Everybody is so pleasant and attentive. It's right next to INA metro gate number 2. The atmosphere is also nice, with good music and space.

The food quality as well as quantity is adequate for the price. The price is variable with the menu but not that expensive as compared to many other restaurants of the same kind (and swiggy -of course). Seating arrangements are somewhat okay but when it's crowded, it would be somewhat uncomfortable to have a good dining experience. Overall, i would say it is a very good restaurant with plenty of South Indian options and non-veg options. Go and try yourself. Guten Appetit
