Modern Cafe is popular & well known pure vegetarian South Indian restaurant & coffee Shop located in the heart of Pune City. It is one of the City's oldest eating-houses, serving South Indian Food. Modern cafe special Dosa & UdidVada Sambar is worth giving a try. Well you have so many options available though. Ambience is good enough to enjoy your meal. They have two types of sitting, one is proper restaurant & one is for breakfast just as you enter. I love the ambiance of this place & they take good care of cleanliness & hygiene. Definitely one of my trusted place for breakfast.
This is perfect place for food near shivaji nagar. I always prefer breakfast from this place. You will get authentic south indian breakfast here. This place is famous for there crispy masala dosa. I also love medu vada from here. Food quality is good. If you go in peak hours, you probably have to wait to get free table.
Food :5/5
Price :4/5
Service :4/5
Good food and no long waiting. Cost is also minimum as compared to quantity and quality of food taste. Ambience is also good.
You can have breakfast, lunch and dinner..!
Here you will get many types of south indian and north indian food. I personally like the south indian more. Service was ok types. Place is also good for eating there or taking a parcel.
This cafe was located closer to the place where I was staying so once decided to visit for breakfast. Service was sort of slow.
Good for trying basic south indian dishes like dosa, vada, idli etc.
Nothing too great or bad to highlight but could be visited once for breakfast or some other meal of the day.
Visited the Cafe recently and loved it.
The ambience is good. And the food is great.
We ordered idli sambar, dosa and filter coffee.
All the three things were great in taste and quality.
Recommended!
Always a right decision to visit here. Amazing options. One must definitely try their Modern Special Masala Dosa. They also serve tasty Chole Bhature #TheFoodieTraveler
Very nice place. Staff very cordial, quality of food is also good. Modern special dosa is bigger than expected, chatani is just amazing.
You will get one spoon butter also
And kaju khishmish topping gives it a different flavour
You guys must give it a try
I was near PMC and wanted to have quick lunch, nothing specific in my mind so thought of going to this place (Pure Veg). Entering and sitting at the table gave me all the 90's vibes. Felt nostalgic, a typical Udupi restaurant vibes. Looking through the menu the rates seemed to be very reasonable too. I was alone so thought of the Thali ( South Indian to be specific Mangalorean thali). When it arrived it was a lot for 110 bucks ! 2 dry vegetables, 1 rasam, 1 daal, 1 tangy semi gravy, rice curd, papad and refreshing buttermilk (ofcourse pickle, Onion and lime a thali is incomplete without them)! When it arrived i felt i ordered too much ! But again I am the one who believes in never wasting food ! So I dug in ! Not a fan of aloo sabji so that has to be finished first :D ! The other dry veg was elephant;s truck with chana dal guessing), the rasam was very subtle, a bit of tangy, sweet and spicy it reminded me of the rasam in Krishna Matt in Udupi ! The dal fry was regular dal fry with garlic and tadka again subtle, the tangy semi-gravy I am not sure but was good ! 6 puri's are too much for my appetite I was full by 5th puri but then had to finish everything the the rasam and rice combination was something I was waiting for long ! The regular steamed rice with this rasam is heavenly just a bit od ghee was missing but I can't complain. finally the plate was all wiped clean. It was time for the buttermilk ! It has a hint of ginger, salt, coriander it missed the green chillies the one you get in Mangalore/Udupi has green chilies in it. It has a cooling effect on the body during summers is what I have heard. This must have been removed to suit the local taste (just guessing because a lot of food when it travels to other states/regions and catering the masses you have to skip a few ingredient to please the masses). Like they say in hindi, " Pet bhi bhar gaya and dil bhi !!" literally !
I don't remember the last time I ordered a thali ! But just the vibes of this place made me revisit those 90's memories !
If you love South Indian specially the Udupi food you must have it here ! Highly recommended !
This is one of the oldest place in a very good location. The food served is nice and the good part is the taste is not changed since the early days. The quantity is quite sumptuous. A good place.
Went here last week almost after 4 years and the taste and quality is still the same. This is one of the oldest hotels in Pune.
Had Onion uttappa and Cut masala dosa and both were up to the mark. We 3 were there and 2 plates were enough for us. Sambhar and chatni was too good.
It was a Ganesh puja festival time, My family wants dine in veg restaurant. It was good experience. Food was good and ambiance also very nice. They have nice clean place to park bike and car without any price, which is very good in rush city.
Had been there for evening snacks had onion uttapam and veg cutlet. Both were up to the mark. The uttapam was enough for two. A perfect place for heavy breakfast also the filter coffee Here is good but was not fresh and was not as hot the coffee should be. Also the ambience here is good. Parking mighy be an issue due to its prime location.
South Indian food is one among the favourite food type in Pune. People eat as much south indian as other maharashtrian food. This is also because Pune has so many authentic south indian restaurants. And one among the other favourites is Modern Cafe located close to shivaji nagar and j m road. It is as old as the memories of my father-in-law. The best thing about this place is they serve in steel utensils which apart from given authenticity, is my personal favourite because i hate using melamine utensils (extremely harmful for health) Their Neer Dosa is one of my favourite and i recommend everyone to try atleast once. Parking after subway is done is never an issue at Modern cafe. They own a good part of the property around with 2 more restaurants attached in the back side of Modern Cafe. Seating area non ac is like a typical south indian restaurant type. Thay have ac seating facility but have very limited seating capacity in that part.
The most important part about any restaurant is food and i would like to give 5 star rating to their food (taste, quality & quantity).
I recommend a must visit to all the south indian food lovers from Pune and around.
Happy Eating Guys.
My father used to take me here since I was a kid as much I have taken my kids since I’ve been a father. Well there’s a certain old world Shetty charm to this wonderful little place spot-on the beginning of JM road, Pune’s epicentre.
Needless to say, they serve decent quality of food & the folks who serve you are as good. Quite a few of them have been around for a while.
Must visit place to rightly be on your list of old charm hotels in Pune.
Ambiance: 3/5

Nice food is the single line that I would like to add. I ordered punjabi thali
which was nice and so was the sweet lassi
Has been a place from a young age that I visit.....
I love the tea ......
It’s awesome n my all time favourite... would definitely recommend this place
Awesome food and service here. You must try the cut dosa here as well as the filter coffee! The ambience is pretty alright. However, if you are looking for a quiet place then this one isn't for you. Due to its location there is a constant traffic noise but makes it also very easily accessible!
Modern cafe has got some best south indian delicacies! Perfect for breakfast destination. I also like the sandwiches here. A huge saviour for hunger driven mornings.
Lit ambience and quick service. They also give quite well home deliveries.
This is one of my most favourite places that I have been visiting since my school days in the city. I've had almost everything on their menu right from their Punjabi and their South Indian meals and Punjabi Thali
Recently, I visited Modern Cafe for breakfast and got a chance to try out the VFM breakfast meal for just 110/- that included a Masala Dosa, Upma and a cup of coffee. Everything served was delicious, hot and combined with excellent service with the food being served in just about 5 minutes. Their Idli Wada Sambar is also one of my favourites that I prefer during my quick meals. I've always also liked their chutney and sambar that has never disappointed and has been flavourful.
A place you should definitely head to for some wonderful food and great taste!

Mumbai girl in pune. We were staying in the pride hotel nearby and people suggested us this place for vegetarian food.
Important- No Ac, Vegetarian place, parking available.
What we had-
∆ Punjabi Thali- 5/5 it's just too good. 2 tandoori roti, dal tadka, paneer butter masala, matter gravy, pulao, papad, curd, raita, buttermilk, gulab jaanum, tomato soup all for rs-150 (limited).
∆ Schezwan fried rice- great quantity.
∆ Mysore masala dosa- it was covered in some green chutney which I didn't really like.
Overall I really liked the place and might even go back tomorrow.
Pocket friendly yet good taste.
Service was fine. Food was good. Ambience was simple. The menu has almost everything under one roof. Overall a nice place to go when your concern is food at good prices.
It is a good restaurant with a lot many options for lunch or dinner. It also has good South Indian menu to choose from. It is an old restaurant but has maintained the hygiene
We are visiting this place from childhood, and very much attached to this place emotionally because lots of memories are attached to this place. This place is very close to court, Mangla theater and at the beginning of JM road.
Famous dishes are south indian Thali and specifically I love Rawa Masala dosa served with full spoon butter. Nice place in the middle of city, do visit it for quick bites.
Fav place during college days for breakfast as well pocket friendly place for lunch as well dinner!! Now lost charm to sme extent still a good option for breakfast!!
Went for breakfast.
Not much of rush.
Had cheese onion uttapa and Mysore cheese sada dosa.
Both were nice. Then had veg cheese grilled sandwich.it was ok.cofee was nice . Altogether a nice place for breakfast.
average ambiece .price is not very much ordered southindian thali which was really good it was just 100rs and very much sufficient for a person
Had been to this restaurant for morning breakfast on a lazy Sunday.
Ordered their breakfast combo of 3 items i.e. one dosa, one snack like sheera/poha and a choice between tea and coffee. I selected Mysore Masala dosa, Sheera and coffee.
Must say, was impressed with their Sheera and Dosa. Coffee was nothing over the top, but not bad either. Dosa was filling and Sheera was the perfect sweet dish along with Hot Coffee.
Although, I arrived in the wee hours of morning(just their 2nd customer), service was quick and neat as well.
Staff was friendly and the restaurant has a decent ambiance.
Location is a plus for this restaurant, neither too away from the main city nor too far from the suburbs.
Recommended for people looking for a healthy breakfast; In the vicinity of Shivaji Nagar area is a bonus..!
Sharing the images of the snack items below. Cheers!
A nice place tucked in the corner of the city! ! Inside it is really big with ample seating place with different section for non veg ! The place was quite crowded and the food is good , service is quick and ambience is not something very different but very simple and sweet with soothing surrounding ! Starters paneer tikka was okay chole bature were very yummy and dosa and idlis had an authentic taste with typical spicy sambar and coconut chutney! A very old plave maintained at its best ! Pocket friendly restaurant !! Had a great time after a tiring walk around the streets of pune !!
I have been eating here on Sunday mornings for the past two weeks. I think it's pretty decent but ay I'm from South Africa...Anyways I had the dosas and sabudana wada so far and no complaints. Their sambar is really tasty as well as their coconut chutney. There is not many clean restaurants around here. So if in the area, it's a good choice!
There is something about eating dosas that is just sensational. Maybe it's the crispyness...maybe it's the eating with your hands...maybe it's the chutneys that go with it? Whatever it is, I think it's a sensational dish and I will always love dosas!
20/11/16
So I love Mysore dosas. Well today when I ordered it. I got a green chutney instead of the regular red chutney inside the dosa. This was the first time eating this and it was fantastic! It was a mint chutney inside the dosa. See that's what's incredible about this place. You don't really know what to expect every time you order something. Now that could be a bad thing. But for this restaurant it's certainly not.
Good place to be must try chole batura which are very famous here ..ambience is average and service is relatively good ..must try once .....
Ek number hotel aahe. Kahi pan kha sagle changle aahe 👌👌👌👌 .............,...............................................................

After heavy breakfast we chose to have some quick bite's.
So nearest and favorite option was modern cafe.
Today we had
paneer Manchurian,( awesome taste )
manchaw soup,( not at all good they put extra vinegar in it. and
ganga jamuna juice.( More like orange juice)
Quick service
Modern cafe is same which we used to go more than 10 to 15 year back.( Typical Shetty hotel) no improvement in ambience.
Good for udpi style food... Rasam wada n wada sambar are good options to try ... Sada Rava dosa is nice n crispy. Overall a good evening snack place ..
A typical udupi style restaurant.. Sitting centrally to all the main places.. It has a good food menu.. Ordered for mysore masala dosa... It was good... The coffee was too sweet but theeke..
The ambience could be a little more cosy.. The services are good..
Good place for a change

- - Modern Cafe, J.M. Road.
Its a nostalgic feeling to visit this place after few years. This place has always been a special one for me as it reminds me of my first day of college, some snacks with dad and probably the only place which he "approved" for me to have food outside :p and because 1st time I asked someone out on a date was at this place 😝
The ambience has improved a lot along span of time and is one of the simple and refreshing interiors I know.
It's always a fix menu when i visit here. It's either something from the south Indian menu, veg cutlet and filter coffee.
The coconut chutney, sambar and the green chutney has been the same for years.
There is nothing that special about the food but its prepared well simple and you will definitely like it.
Modern cafe still remains a fav place for people from nearby offices and couples who want to avoid other famous hotels on JM and FC road :p
Now they have dedicated parking area for 2 wheelers and they have started home delivery in a radius of 4KM
One of the perfect place place for lunch n dinner.. I got down at shivajinagar at 23.00.. me n my frnd went der at that time it was about to close still they din refuse us..
In puna to find place for dinner at late night is v difficult.. on top of that food quality was great.. one of the best soft roti in puna u will get here.. must try..
Modern Cafe is near to my office & was on my wish list for a long time. I visited this restaurant during lunch time. This is a simple vegetarian restaurant serves variety of dishes from various cuisines. Car Parking you have to manage yourself! The ambience of the restaurant nothing great to talk about.
We had ordered Masala Papad, Modern Special Vegetable, Tandoori Roti, Boondi Raita & Butter Milk.
Masala Papad was crispy & good! Modern Special Vegetable was served hot in red gravy with mixed vegetables, dry fruits (cashews & raisin) one cherry on the top. It was yummy! Boondi Raita was not mixed properly but once mixed, it was good in taste. Butter Milk was good as usual!
We also decided to taste their Cut Dosa. Cut Dosa is actually a Masala Dosa which is cut into many pieces and served with butter, but no sambar & chutney was served. It was also good in taste!
This restaurant, though serves tasty food, but requires to improve on overall hygiene! Price wise quite reasonable. Staff were good & service was quite fast!
Located right at the start of jm road.It is well known for south Indian food and lunches...we often prefer this place if we do not want to travel as it is near our place.the service is OK OK bt the taste is worth waiting for...value for money is good...and this place is definitely visiting....
Nice place to have fast food & udipi food.. We tried variety of south indian dishes including rawa masala dosa, uttappa & steamed idli. Surprisingly Chinese dishes are also good.. They serve very good coffee as well.. Service is fast & staff is cordial.. Nice place to pamper your taste buds..
Place is old and has a unique taste when it comes to food. They have this sabzi veg chilly malai which i love the most. The malai is sweet while the chillies with the soft paneer go amazingly. Its nearby to me so a regular visitor. Good in hygiene also.
Hangout place of COEP and Modern college students. They serve good vegetarian food items. Ambience is OK. Prices are bit high. Very small parking area near restaurant.
A very old and famous restaurant in pune. So much that people use it as a landmark. The food has always been decent here. I prefer eating more of snacks than proper meals when i go there.
This place is clean, and serves very tasty veg food. Great for lunch/dinner. Menu is quite extensive and the price is also good.
Whatever you order, must have a fruit salad in the end. Service is also quick and efficient.
Worth recommending.
Situated on JM road, this cafe-cum-restaurant has a very long history. The dosas are good. The main course too has a lot of variety. The ambience is good. I didn't like the service though. But its value for money.

This restaurant is very old. My parents told me that they used visit this restaurant whenever they were near this place. I got a chance to visit this place.
The place is in Shivaji Nagar area and was crowded but we managed to get the table easily.
Food: We ordered their Veg Thali, Masala Dosa, Onion Uttapam and Special Veg Pizza.
- Veg Thali contains 3 Subji, Rassam, Daal, Rice, Dahi Wati, One Sweet Dish, 2 Roti, Papad and Glass of Buttermilk. All items very good but not great but the quantity was huge.
- Masala Dosa and Onion Uttapam was tasty and had a good portion. Within ordered food items these 2 were the best.
- Special Veg Pizza had a lot of veggies and on top of that Cheese. This was Ok not the best.
Ambience: Ambience was nice. Not the best but simple and neat. Service was bit slow. We always had to call the waiter.
Price: Food is cheaper here compared to the other restaurants in that area. Quality and Quantity is good compared to price.
Overall it was a nice experience. Parent enjoyed their old memories. As per their feedback taste has changed but still it's good. May be Punjabi Cuisine is best. We haven't tried that. So you can definitely visit this place once.
Ahhaa. Just Awesome.
It proves its name.
If you want to feel the proper old type hotel , then you must visit it.
You have quite a wait for your order.
It's always crowded with Official Workers.
Food is awesome. Delicious ✌️
And a big part is they have their own parking.
An upscale restaurant near COEP hostel. It is spacious and has parking options.
Food is really tasty and presentable.
We had lunch here and it was an amazing experience.
Authentic South Indian restau located near JM Road.
Perfect place for breakfast and their specaility are Paper dosa, Wada sambhar dip, Uttapa, Idli rassam, etc
One thing I loved is their spcl south indian sambhar and fresh coconut chutney.
Parking could be an issue on weekends.
Visited this iconic place to have pav bhaji, masala pav along with coffee. Pav bhaji was very tasty unlike other hotels where they mix dal in bhaji. Here, bhaji was made up of vegetables only. Also, masala pav was flavourful. Pav served with pav bhaji was very soft loaded with butter. Coffee is a must try here. Typical south Indian coffee you will get here. Service was bit slow considering that the place is always crowded. Overall, must visit place for a vegetarian.
I came here after 20 years. The taste is still the same and awesome. Highly recommended for South Indian food.
The place is very nice and the atmosphere is good. The service was really fast within 10-15 mins and the food quality and taste were very nice. The food I ate was worth the price which is not even that high
Very reasonable price for impeccable taste.
Modern spl. dosa is a must try along with their iconic filter coffee. And this place crowds up quickly especially on weekends.
One of my all time fev restaurants in the Pune city area.
It’s been more than 2 decades now and still the quality, taste, service and vibe is consistent.
Nice and excellent at Shivajinagar. Very old and best hotel of Pune. So that Indian food and vegetarian food available here. Food quality is awesome taste.
Modern Cafe has a good standard for its service, staff, and food quality. It's not wrong for me to say that it's one of the best restaurants at affordable cost. I like its South Indian food quality, and the sambar is just perfect!!! I have been to a few more expensive restaurants, and in my opinion, Modern Cafe beat them with it's food quality and service. It is the first restaurant that actually gave proper handwash to wash your hands. I will definitely visit them again when the opportunity arises.
Recently I visited modern cafe. I ate Paper masala dosa & medu vada with filter coffee. Food was amazing overall.
Nice place.lot of option. Awesome food. Lot of space
One of the oldest and goldest restaurant..
Visiting this restaurant since 80's.
