I have been there several times for the amazing and authentic Kerela food. The Currys are spicy and well cooked. You should try the sadhya thali. The appams and parrotha are good too. Must try:- prawn curry, fish fry and chicken stew.
Today I got the opportunity to have the traditional Sadhya at Malabar Express, Salunkhe Vihar. 20 plus items were served. This consisted of rice, banana chips, sambar, rasam, a few curries, pickle, papadams, buttermilk and a generous serving of the payasam. Don't ask the names. I just enjoyed the meal getting my hands dirty. Started with salt and ended with payasam. A blissful meal it was!!
Recently there are many South Indian outlets opened everywhere and some of them meet the mark, this being one of those. Worth the taste and food quality.
Ordered malabar fish curry. I received the food within half hour. Never disappointed with this restaurant. The curry was more than sufficient , fish was fresh and curry was really worth it ..
Hope you like curry leaves, they have in abundant here ๐ฌ
Prawns pepper fry, dry starter with prawns stir fried, spicy and tasty. Just as I like it.
Fish fry, the fish was soft, the marination of the fish was very tasty, I liked the whole idea of serving on banana leaves and all, it just makes it more interesting.
Buffalo fry, the boneless meat was stir fried in some masalas, very tasty indeed.
Hope to visit again and try other delicacies.
Malabar Express serves authentic South Indian dishes from Kerala and is mostly famous for its breakfast and dine-in dishes. Located in Salunke Vihar, the owner of Malabar Express has himself curated some of the recipes. The most favorite dish of people who visit the restaurant is Sambhar and apart from that, their famous thali, which includes groundnuts, special unpolished brown rice,Kerala papad and pumpkin based pachri.
This looks not great place even ambience is very normal, No AC. Service is also just ok but taste of food takes all.
Perfect South Indian Non Veg food I ordered
Chicken Puttu - which was ok
Fish - steamed in banana leafs very oil, perfect spices
Malabar Fish Curry - very nice curry
Surely recommended prices is just ok good for quality and quantity
This was totally worth skipping my breakfast for. I came here with the hope for a scrumptious meal and was completely flabbergasted as I munched away the lovely meal which was a special for 'Vishu'(a festival similar to Diwali down south). I totally would recommend to come here if your tatse buds ever had a tingly feeling for something down South...& specifically Malabari cuisine.
We went here for the Vishu Special Thali.
It consisted of 25 items right from 3-4 varieties of pickles to different types of drinks. The rice and Daal was crazyyyyyyy!!!
It was very filling and worth the price.
Itโs worth an experience. Do visit! ๐
Loved the meal. Came here to have the vishu special meal. The meal had 25 different dishes. The service was also very fast and prompt. Overall it was a great experience! Would definitely recommend.
Entered this place eager to try their Vishu special meal, left from there with full tummy's and a feeling of satisfaction. Lovely, simple, tasty south Indian food. A must for anybody craving for some homely food.
I am fairly new to Kerala's cuisine. I had a friend whose mother used to make awesome avial. That's about my prior experience of this cuisine.
I had tried mini Sandhya from Malabar Xpress and I absolutelyloved it. The food has a simplicity of home cooked meal.
Keep up the good work. Definitely recommend.
A 4 for an authentic Kerala style restaurant of it's type, a small cafe on salunke vihar road.
The varieties of dosa and the sambar and chutny with it is what makes it different.I started with chocolate dosa which was surprisingly good. The idli sambar, I did not like it as much as it was mashed into the sambar. The chicken and boiled egg dosa tasted good. Sambar is yumm and you would want to have more, not the usual sweet one. Coconut chutney is also good. The way dosa was served on banana leaf also gave the Kerala feel!
Ambience- they need to have an inverter and AC. It was too hot inside, the interiors are ok.

A must visit cafe if u like to have south Indian food.
Love the food and delivery great service. If you want to have authentic Malabari Kerala cuisine go for it.ย Fish items are really delicious. Go for dosa combos or kerala all day meal items.
A must visit place for some awesome variety of dosa and other South Indian foodstuff. A must try is the chicken dosa full of flavour and delicious. The sambar is one of the best Iโve had around town and reminded me of my visit to Kerala. Will be visiting again soon to try the other items on the menu.
One of the best place in Pune for the South Indian delicacies. Service is good with ample amount of varieties, starting from Avai, Fry Chilli, Kerala Parotta and Malabar chicken curry. My favorite was their thali, which includes groundnuts, special unpolished brown rice,Kerala papad and pumpkin based pachri.ย If someone is looking for a place with authentic south indian menu under descent price, this place is a must try.
Malabar Xpress
One morning I wanted to have some good heavy breakfast. After much thinking and driving along the lanes of Salunkhe Vihar I suddenly remembered Malabar Xpress. These guys vouch to serve authentic Kerala cuisine. So here we were at the restaurant. They had just opened and cleaning process was going on. The staff was happy to welcome us early morning.
They have a very nice number of Malabar cuisine dishes on their menu. When we asked what would be available, we got a very cool answerโฆ โask any dish and we will try to serve it, a few dishes may take time thoughโ. Luckily when we asked for Nadan Chicken Curry with Appam, they offered to serve it in 10 mins and truly it was at our table quite soon.
The curry was a simple home style Kerala curry. Very yummy, a little spicy with a nice tinge of sourness and a rich curry leaves flavour. The quantity is also pretty good. We could eat 5 appams with this one bowl of mouth watering curry.
A very simple place with not much effort on the interiors of the place but full efforts poured in on the food. Would love to visit this place again, prferrably for lunch/dinner so that I can try out the other varieties too.

Looking for an authentic place which serves Kerla cuisine then this is definitely the place for you. They serve some amazing variety of fish as well as chicken. They are well known for the amazing thali they serve.
Starters
Chicken pepper fry : It is one of the best starters they serve. The chicken was nice & spicy with chilli flakes over it. The marination was perfect & the chicken was well cooked.
Kerla style fry : It was a chicken fry with a delicious coating served with fried curry leaves & salad.
King fish & prawns tawa fry : They get a fresh stalk of fish every day. The fish were well marinated with a tasty masala & was cooked well.
Mains
Chicken chettanad curry : The curry was not too spicy & suits every palate it was delicious & had a beautiful texture. It goes amazing with either Kerla porotta or else appam.
Kottayam fish curry : It was something different from the curries we usually have. It has a nice texture & was damn spicy. It was worth giving a shot.
Malabar fish curry : It was a milder version of Kottayam fish curry. So those who are not much found of spicy curry can go for this one.
Brown rice : This was one of the most aesthetic dish on the table. The brown rice was served with a papad. It goes really well with the curries.
Payasam : It was the best dessert's I have had. It is basically a kheer which is jaggery based with coconut & other dry fruits & rice in it. It is definitely worth giving a shot.
Cheattheday!
A place with basic ambience but serving amazing Kerala food which tantalises your tastebuds to have more of it everytime you try something. The fish we had was freshly sourced and cooked to perfection with the south indian spices. We ordered the starters chicken, fish, prawns and buff in chettinad style and they were simply amazing. The curries had a nice tang to them along with the appam they tasted amazing. We also got a thali meal out of which the cabbage poriyal was superb. Ended the meal with payasam which was really tasty and was perfectly sweet. Overall a great place to have keralian cuisine in NIBM area.
Visited last Sunday to this small yet amazing place located on Salunke Vihar road.
Very few places in the city actually serve authentic Kerela food and this is definitely one of them!
Coming to the food.
To start with, we tried the the chicken pepper fry. Very well cooked and the portion quantity was also enough for two.
Coming to the main course, when we asked for a medium spicy gravy, the owner suggested the Malabar chicken curry along with Kerela parotha. Although the gravy looked really spicy, it was medium spicy, exactly how we wanted it. Even the parotha's were soft, and went perfectly well with the gravy.
To end with, we had a payasam which again was just perfect! ๐
To add to it, the owner was very generous to spend some time and give us some information about the cuisine and how it is prepared!
Overall it was a great experience, and would love to visit again!
This is a small place at Salunkhe Vihar which serves Authentic Kerala Cuisine.
This was the first time I tried authentic Kerala cuisine. So I was a bit excited to try everything.
Lets begin with Starters:
1. Chicken pepper Fry: This was the best starter served during my visit. Tender and juicy chicken, fried with coconut, onions, curry leaves and whole lot of spices.
The coconut and the crisp fried onions gave this dish a very unique flavor.
2. Kerala style fry: Perfectly done with a lot of spicy aspect. This dish was SPICY!
3. Kingfish fry and Prawns Tawa fry: The addition of fried coconuts just brings a beautiful texture and richness to the fish and prawns.
The fish was fresh and was perfectly fried. The Prawns we exceptionally good. It had the right crunch and right tenderness. Just PERFECT.
For Main Course we had:
1. Malabar Fish Curry:
2. Kottayam Fish Curry: This curry is ideal for spicy lovers. It has a great combination of spicy and tangy which goes well with the Brown Steamed Rice.
3. Chicken Chettinad Curry
All these curries are unique in flavors and a must try for sure.
The Malabar Porotta and Appam compliments the Curries and gives it a total Kerala Feel.
FYI: They also serve Buff fry.

Malabar Xpress is specialized restaurant serving authentic Kerala Cusine.
It was in my wishlist from couple of months , we visited them last weekend.
Menu has varies of option meal/thali and al-carte , we opt for alacarte and started our meal with appetizers :
- Chicken pepper fry and Kerala style fry
- Kingfish Fish & Prawns tawa fry
- Buffalo meat fry
Chicken Pepper fry and Their Signature Buff Fry were rightly done and just #Outstanding.
Kingfish Tawa Fry too was done well with less oilย #GoodOptionForStarters
I loved the way "Prawns Tawa Fry" were made in Fresh coconut chips/slivers : spicy and just amazing. ย
In Main course we tried
- Chicken Chettinad Curry
- Kottayam Fish Curry
- Malabar Fish Curry
We ordered Appam , Kerala porotta and Brown rice with these curries.
Malabar Fish curry which was bit tangy and Chettinad style chicken Curry was loved by everyone of table
But I liked "Kottayam curry" which was spiciest among all and had distinct flavours of kokam/tamarind.
Brown rice served with Kerala papad : was good option with fish curry and then we had perfect sweet end with "Payasam"..!!!
Overall : Good place to try Authentic Kerala cuisine.
Authentic Kerala food.. Amazing hospitality by the staff.. Uppam and curries are fabulous! Over all an excellent experience... must try!! Please do visit if you love authentic meals..
MALABAR XPRESS SALUNKE VIHAR PUNE
if you are in search of some pure authentic cultural taste of KERALA than the right place for you to drop in is the MALABAR XPRESS.
they have been satisfying their customers by their authenticity and deliciousness from few years and many more to go.
they have a large menu of deliciousness .
Well I can name this place as MINI KERALA IN PUNE.
one of the most important aspects of Restaurants is it hospitality and really this place has won my heart by their humbleness.
the AMBIENCE is not too big but is very clean .
I believe they have been focusing more on the taste and quantity.
They Serve Quantity which can satisfies once hunger.
if you are in look for some kerala delicacy do drop here.
There are places which frequent our ears often but many of us do not know where they exactly are, example โ Konkan, Awadh or in this case Malabar. The Malabar region runs on the South West coast of India along the borderlines of Kerala till it reaches the very tip of the country at Kanyakumari. The region has everything from lush green mountains to sea shores. It also the region where a lot of spices of India come from. But enough Geography, lets talk food.
Malabar Xpress is one of the restaurants located in Pune that serves you aunthentic Kerala. We tried chicken thali and few other dishes. It is a small place for dine-in but the service and the food taste was really lip smacking. Although I am not much aware of aunthentic Malabar taste but I must say I really liked the taste. I will recommend this to everyone looking for taste of Kerala in Pune.
By watching the entrance of the restaurant itself we were sure that we will be trying today some aunthentic south food and was really excited to try something new today.
We tried chicken thali on the banana leaf as an authentic Kerala restaurant.
The Chicken Thali mainly consist of Avival, Pachadi,Thoran,Rice with Sambhar,Malabar Chicken Curry, appam.
All of this was served with butter milk, fried chilly, Kerala parotha, papad and rasam. Also we were offered to try Fish Tawa Fry and Malabar Fish curry.
Overall, a nice place to taste aunthentic Kerala food and a must visit place for people who love taste of Kerala.
Iโve finally found a place that serves amazing and authentic Kerala food and that too in my vicinity. I recently had the opportunity to review Malabar Xpress. Itโs a small place with basic ambience and a homely vibe but the food is truly delicious. We had Chicken Thali that was served on a banana leaf. It mainly comprises of appam, kerala poratta, rice, sambar, rassam, avial, chicken curry and a papad. Every element on the thali was authentic. The rice served is an indigenous variety of rice that is grown in Kerala. Iโve never been a fan of sambar since most of the restaurants here in Pune serve a sweeter version but I liked the fact that it wasnโt sweet at malabar express. Loved it. Also one of their highlights is Kerala sadhya which is an unlimited 12 course vegetarian meal served on banana leaf. It's a part of their Sunday special menu. All in all, Malabar Xpress is a must visit if you wish to have a proper South Indian experience. Especially non-vegetarians should visit this place
Located in Salunkhe Vihar, Malabar Xpress serves authentic Malabari/Kerala cuisine. Visited this place with a few bloggers last week and tried their Chicken Thali along with a few other dishes.
The Chicken Thali that was served on a banana leaf consisted of -
Avial - A mixed vegetable curry that was cooked in a spiced coconut and yogurt sauce.
Pachadi - Kerala style raita made with coconut, mustard seeds and yogurt.
Thoran - A stir-fry made with grated coconut and minimal spices.
Brown Rice with Sambar - Who doesn't love sambar and rice! But here we had brown rice instead of the normal one which apparently doesn't make you gain weight, so obviously I had a little more than I was supposed to.
Malabar Chicken Curry - Chicken curry made in Kerala style with lots of onions, curry leaves, coconut oil and coconut milk.
Dessert - A banana and jaggery preparation with coconut and cashews.
All of this was served with appams, Malabari porothas, fried chilly, pickle, papad, butter milk and rasam.ย
We also had their Kozhi Porichathu (Kerala Chicken Fry), Fish Tawa Fry and Malabar Fish Curry.
Every dish had the authentic Malabari taste, from the fried chilly to the dessert.
The ambiance and the music that was being played in the background too was traditional and authentic.
The owner was sweet enough to come and pay us a visit and made sure we had a great time.
Malabar Xpress is definitely a must visit for all of you that love Malabari cuisine or wish to try it.
Visited this place recently. We were welcomed by the owner. They serve authentic Kerala food. Unlike other Kerala restaurants in the town they serve only Kerala food which is their USP and liked it.
Tried veg thali there along with kerala chicken curry, fish curry and Kerala paratha. Thali consists of special kind of a rice like brown rice which was good in taste along with sambar and rassam. But it depends on individual, if you like rice in meal then it will be good for you. Kerala chicken curry was tasty, chicken was juicy and fresh. Fish curry was amazing in taste. Dessert was worth mentioning. It contained a preparation of jaggery. Taste was very nice.ย
Ambiance is simple and decent with seating of 4 or 5 tables. All walls are full of pictures of Kerala tradition. The entrance door is worth mentioning.ย
Overall, very nice experience of Kerala food.
One of the best Kerala cuisine in town I must say. Must try if you want to try authentic Kerala food in Pune.
I went to Malabar Xpress today and the food was authentic Malabar food. It's a small place for dine-in but the service and the food taste was good. Even though I am not from South but I really liked the taste. It is a must try for people who like Malabar food.
If you love spicy south Indian cuisine Malabar Express is a great choice. I have had festive time Onam Sadhya (amazing variety of food served on a traditional banana leaf) or feast as well as regular snacks, combos, vegetarian dishes and fish curries at this casual dining restaurant in the corner of Salunke Vihar Road inside Super Mall facing the road.ย
Param Pori or nendraparam dipped in batter and fried (a sweet snack item) appams, set dosas, puttu are among the yummy choices on the menu. If you are a hardcore non vegetarian food lover you have enough choices though I have only tried fish curry so far here. The restaurant has attentive staff, medium budget offerings and really tasty food.ย
A change from the usual paneer and standard vegetarian dishes, or the Tandoori or Mughlai style Malabar Express offers you a south Indian gastronomic adventure if you want to enjoy a meal with family and friends in an informal setting. The restaurant is for those who are not too rigid in their choices and truly suits those who love to experiment their taste buds with mouth watering south Indian food choices. I enjoy the food because there are no similar restaurants of the same standard in the area as compared to the multiple choices of Punjabi, Mughlai and Chinese or Italian or junk food restaurants. :-)
Was here a couple of days before. This place will welcome with a pleasant ambiance with attractive images related to the Kerala tradition.
Ordered Rice and Chicken Curry Combo. Chicken Curry seasoned with red chillies was the best combination with Appam. It was served hot and delicious. The service was great.
We ordered for Buffalo meat fry and Kerala Parotta- the best we have had in Pune. The meat now is a favourite. Enjoyed the rasam, so much better than normal soups available in the market. The Chicken Biryani in Kerala style is a must try. Not to forget the idiyappams, appams and puttu. The best Kerala food in Pune for sure. Kappa and fish curry is heavenly tasting. God's own for sure. After a long time Pune has an original authentic malabari food.
Best Kerala food I've eaten in pune and reasonable price , you guys are really doing a good job with maintaining your consistency of quality , taste and hygiene !!
Doesn't know much about Kerala cuisine but I just love Malabar biryani and chicken chettinad with appam. Malabar biryani is must try over here.
Best Kerala restaurant in Pune. Authentic malayali food. Place is a bit small but has got quite an ambience to it. They always play good Malayalam melodies of 80s-90s. friendly staff, waiting time is usually less.
My favourites include Puttu which comes with pappadam ;) and beef roast. Kappa is superb. Appam and porotta tastes like home made.
If you want to try some food cooked in Kerala style try this place. I tired chicken biryani. biryani was good. Taste was good and also spicy.
Malabar Xpressย serves delicious Kerala cuisine for you to explore and re-live the tastefulย experiences Kerala offers.
I ordered (via UberEats):
Appam: The appams were soft and fresh.
Rasam: This tasted authentic. It was spicy, tangy and flavourful.
Buffalo Meat Fry: With the amalgamation of different spices and sliced coconut, the outcome was super fantastic. I devoured dish.
Fish Porichathu: The fish was fresh and perfectly cooked.
They also serve chicken, mutton, fish, prawns and beef thalis. Malabar is a good choice to savour the delicious Kerala delights it offers.
๐Food delivered was so delicious.Thank you
Always wanted to visit the place. A decent place, easy to find, we reached on an overcast Saturday morning.
We ordered the following:
Chicken Varatharechatu
Porotta
Appam
Brown Rice
Veg Thali
& Lots of pappadam.
The appam wasn't the usual with a lump in the middle. The porotta was decent but could have been more layered.
The veg Thali is good with Avial, Pachidi, Sambar and Cabbage.
I would visit here again to have a try at the beef!!
very nice thanks Malabar I was like it you are Food ๐๐
Very authentic tasting curries.. the egg toast as well as chicken curry are a must try!
Long grain rice to be used for biriyani
Yummy yummy.... My favorite authentic kerala food joint
The all time saviour from my hunger pangs, Malabar Xpress, serves the best Malabar or Kerala porota as you say it. They also serve the softest of the soft โappamโ along with the chicken curry. This would always be my go to order whenever Iโm at home.
Their chicken puttu is a must try.
And their pazham pori really made me miss my native place. Thank you for always making me feel at home!

This place serves decent Kerala food . The place is cozy and the food is served hot and is tasty. but bit expensive. If you order via zomato , you can get a discount but the authentic taste is ruined by all the aluminium foils.
Great food, authentic Kerala taste! I received a Zomato treat - Payasam which was super tasty!

Ordered Beef Fry, Surmai Fish Fry, Chicken curry. All tasted really good. First time I ate Kerala dishes but for sure not the last time. Enjoyed my food, will repeat.

Only the name and the type of material they use are from Kerala but the taste is no way in comparison, only by seeing the recipes you will feel that you are having a Kerala food but the taste doesn't say that.
A very wonderful outlet serving authentic kerala cuisine. The porotta and chicken curry is mind blowing. Appam and puttu is fantastic with masala and fish. Do not miss the payasam... The lightly sweet dessert.
Today I got the opportunity to have the traditional Sadhya at Malabar Express, Salunkhe Vihar. 20 plus items were served.
This consists of rice, banana chips, sambar, rasam, a few curries, pickle, papadams, buttermilk and a generous serving of the payasam. Don't ask the names. I just enjoyed the meal getting my hands dirty. Started with salt and ended with payasam. A blissful meal it was!!
If you are Malayali, you are not going to miss home food. And i mean it. I am a malayali who just moved from Kerala and i missed food.
And my non malayali friends just savoured Malabar xpress food.
Small happy place, they just let you sit and have the longest conversation you wanna have.
Must visit.
