Review No 589:
A good friend of mine has been wanting to go all out on a good fish meal and this time pulled me off all places to PGI (or Pune Goan Institute) on Rasta peth / Nana peth (per google maps) for hopefully a good meal.
This place is attached to the Pune Goan Institute which by the looks of it is pretty dated. This place too has a few seating area. One which is a simple no nonsense seating in the middle, with an enclosed seating for about 4 guests on the right as soon as you enter. On the left you have a bar kind of setup where mostly folks who are in large numbers can be seated. There was also a AC seating for mostly family. Overall an average setup if you ask me. But the best was yet to come... its food.
What was on the plate?
a. Squid Masala: Starting off with the Squid masala. I'm not a big seafood eater and hence the opportunity to eat squid never arose. Hence, not having a benchmark against previous experience, from an expert standpoint I was told the squid was a bit dry. But from my layman perspective, the squid tasted great because the masala preparation was great. Not at all overtly spicy. The squid does taste a bit rubbery, but I have been told that's how its supposed to be. My first experience with squid was a good one.
b. Tandoor Prawns: Next up was the Tandoor Prawns. Delectable and cooked to perfection. Loved it.
c. Clams Masala: Again, something which I have tried for the first time. The clam meat was miniscule, but the saltiness was balanced by the masala, which was the same as the ones in the squid.
d. Matka Fish (Rawas): A super star of a dish, this one is a must try. The rawas fish is dum cooked in an earthen Matka with cheese and a few greens, covered with cabbage leaves and the Matka finally sealed with Atta. A winner of a dish and a specialty of the Pune Goan Institute.
e. Pomfret Fish Curry with Steamed Rice and Roti: We were shown the Pomfret first as the price is as per the catch. Took them some time to get the final preparation out of the kitchen but the end result was finger licking good. Roti's were a letdown. Rice was just about fine but the quantity less. Being three of us, we ran of the curry. We requested for a bit of extra curry, but the response was "Thoda time lagega"...we got the message.
Price: The food bill inclusive of taxes put us back by Rs 1900 for three. For a seafood fare, this is absolutely great if not brilliant.
Service: The servers were good and made apt recommendations.
I'm glad I agreed to the suggestion to visit Pune Goan Institute as this place was a great find for seafood and at a great price. Here's the ratings for our experience thus far:
Food: 4/5
Price: 4.5/5
Service: 4/5
Ambience: 3/5
*****************
Overall: 3.87/5 (Rounding off to 4 as per the rating system on Zomato)
P.S: I am pursuing an open issue ticket with Zomato as I am still having issues in uploading photos and reviews in tandem. Zomato support is still looking into it, per their reply on 17 July 2019. Pictures getting uploaded will be delayed.
PGI stands for ‘Poona Goan Institute’ & it's their clubhouse. Pretty much, it combs the charm of an erstwhile Poona whistling into the relaxed bay of Goa.
The service is so honest that our waiter even forgot his own name in an effort to consort us through some great food & wonderful beverages. It's an experience in itself; there's a certainty about their love for their regulars.
See you at PGI!!
This restaurant serves amazing delicious fresh seafood in Pune.
We had matka fish (a very popular dish here) where fish (red snapper) is cooked in a matka and served in creamy cheesy flavor. It tastes simply amazing - a must-try here.
The next must-have is the fried squid. This is, by far, one of the best seafood appetizers I had. The taste is simply too good.
They have a full bar and also a family section. The ambiance is okayish, but good for a relaxing evening with deliciously good food.
Matka fishhhhhhh ... My favourite ! Loved the service, beautiful, creative ambiance. Been there with family. They have crabs and I tried crab kheema which I didn't find that great.
Good nonveg food with a well equipped bar. Preferably for group of people who want to relax by having good food along with drinks. Good for late office parties in heart of the city. Very good quality of sea food too. Ambience is typically that of a bar, though they have a family section but its best for get together with old friends.

Service- 4/5
Overall always a very pleasant experience.
This is strictly for their Thaali lunch at PGI.
Was hunting for equipment when we last this place. Frankly speaking we didn't even know this place existed. It's called the Pune Goan Institute and it's sort of a small club where people come to drink, play cards etc.
Lunch is when they serve Thaalis, so we decided to give it a shot. We called for a Surmai and Prawn Thaali with an additional portion of Prawns tawa fry. Food did take time, but we're glad we waited. The Prawn fry was lip smacking and fresh off the boat!!! Just a squeeze of lime and it was good to go. We cleaned that plate in 5 minutes! Then came ether Thaali.
Both surmai and prawn had the same Goan curry, hot chappati, and sol Kadi. In the Prawn Thaali there was a prawn sukka masala and a bombil fry. With the surmai there was green peas masala and and Surmai fry. Rice followed after the chappati. it was so tasty my friend n I did not speak for 20 minutes till we finished the Thaali.
The fish and prawns were really fresh and juicy (implying they don't use frozen prawns) and the Goan curry was smooth, tangy and tasty! Really loved the meal and plan to go again soon!
Good food. Decent ambience. Reasonably priced food. I judge a place by its curries ... And they had a good bangda curry ... Authentic Goan. The alcohol is a bit expensive (or maybe i feel that just because i returned from Goa ;-) )
Yesterday I had go with my family
I had order some seafood
food quality and quantiti was very excellent
Atmosphere is very good
Staff also very cooperative
This is very good restaurant for seafood lover
I'm waiting for my next visit
Best food and service ..Especially prawns malwani curry, surmai tawa, and tandoori prawns .Good place
To drink and have fun..Only one problem the hotel does not have enough parking space or valet parking.
Okay so I hope draught in the dessert would be gone in few days according to the news. At least hope so if you know what I mean.
But this is the place that we've landed up to in last few months around 10-15 times as we stay in Camp area & we're blessed with a spiderweb of highways around😜
So being 1 of the 3-4 bars left open, still they did handle the rush very well! We had to wait 10-15 mins couple of times to get a table but that's okay I won't complain. Anyway...
Service- 4.5
Liquor- legit.
Ambience- don't care but the place is nicely presented.
Food- not bad 3.5
And I must include this category separately...
Fish- 4.5 ( Better than the "LUNCH HOMES" around. They're proving the name they hold)
Let's see how much more time I stay fussy about the place.😁
Nice restro + bar good food and environment and very good service from senior captain Vinay nice gye and last food quality is good specially chicken mataka
Awesome experience with safe wallet... Lol.. Guys, it was awesome there. I had gone to same place almost 3 years back and now it felt like resurrected. Reborn from ashes ...
Great place to have fish in Pune, same time you can drink & smoke as well.

Overall wow!!! Loved the place. Keep up good work guys...
PGI is an old times favourite place to drink by quarter system and eat some nice fish. Recently they've renovated the place which gives it a classy and fresh look. They've a family section too.
Coming to food my personal favourites are:
1. Ola Bombil fry (bombay duck), its crispy and catch is usually fresh.
2. Chicken mataka: Chicken tikka served in a mataka alongwith masala. Super dish #must try
3. Prawns manglorian curry: Typical south indian curry with 8-10 chunks of prawns. Goes well with nir dosa.
Overall its a good restaurant to have drinks & some nice food.
PS: parking may be an issue as it is in a old city peth area.

Great on food, it's more of a bar, and the crowd consists of men mostly. However there is a small family room. The sea food is amazing had two plates of prawn tawa. Spicy , medium sized juicy prawns coated with masala and tawa fries with lots of curry leaves and onions - must have . Crab masala - I had crab for the first time. Oh boy I fell in love. Sweet meat and soft , the masala itself was tangy the whole process was it very messy as they had given us the pincers and everything required. Ordered some garlic naans to lap up the gravy. The naan was not soft but hard. Ordered rawa coated surmai. Unfortunately I found the fish stinky stale and bland - this one was a let for. Completely . Ordered for some cheese pakoras . Cheese cubes deep fried with pakora batter. Simplest and yummiest. The place is super easy on your pocket. Loved the food, will definitely go back for more
If u miss Goa's seafood or Seafood in general this place is the place to visit...
PGI leaves behind many premium seafood places in Pune with its Flawless quality of seafood ( freshness as well as preparation )
PGI is an interesting water hole. Mainly frequented by people who wish to booze, the place offers a fairly OK food but good ambience. A major challenge here is parking space
PGI i.e. Pune Goan Institute is located in Nana peth right opposite the famous Govinda Bakery. It is a pretty famous place in the area so you can ask anyone for directions.
This place is very old and was once a proper family restaurant but now is mostly frequented by male crowd with the sole purpose of drinking alcohol. They do have a small a/c family section but its hardly ever occupied by families.
There is a big outdoor section and a small sofa seating right outside the a/c family section. There is really not much to write about the interiors or the ambience.
The only reason for 3 stars is the food. Sea-food is their speciality. Do try the Bombay duck here. Even normal chicken items like Tandoori, Kebabs, Butter Chicken, etc. are good. Right from starters till main course, you will not be disappointed. I have never tried their biryani, but I have heard it is good.
The service is quick and the staff is friendly. Although, the experience may vary.
Overall, a normal place for guys to sit and drink combined with good food and pocket friendly prices.
Excellent place in the heart of the city, gr8 ambiance. and a treat for non-veg lovers. Vegetarians will be a little disappointed by the overall flavours, great sea food. . went with a group of 20 . and ordered a variety of dishes, sorry no photos. must try.
Amazing sea food, if you are a sea food lover, you'll keep coming back here!
Right from starters to main course, everything here is yummy.
If you are just focusing on food, and not the other factors like ambience or service, you can try this place!
Its fullform is Pune Goan Institute. Seafood served here is good with a wide range of dishes.Other non vegetarian dishes also have coastal side taste.Ambience is also good. Overall it's a good option in nana peth area as no other better place available in the vicinity.
Crab tawa masala is my favorite dish here. Prawns salt n pepper and prawns butter garlic is a must try. The ambience is ok, good they have a family room. Drinks too are cheaper compared to other resto-bars. Apart from sea-food - Murg Musallam and Chicken Patiala get a thumbs up!!
The best ever seafood in this price range, especially when it comes to Pune's food scenario...
The alchohol is fairly priced, and the Bangda malvan curry, bangda fry, and chicken tandoori was superb to go with the Alchohol..
overall i'd rate it
Food (seafood) - 4.5
Pricing - 4.0
Ambience - 3.5
Service - 3.0
Not really a go-to place... Unless you're with your guy friends. Family section is ok. But ambience not so proper. Yet, I give it 4 stars mainly for the quality of food - veg, NV, seafood. Everything's fabulous, utterly mouth watering! I stay close to this place so we always take a parcel. You could give the place a miss, but not the food. Heavily recommended. Must go.
Forget Mahesh Lunch Home, here's a restaurant that serves one of the best seafood in Pune and that too at 1/3rd the cost. It's also barely 2km away from Mahesh Lunch Home in Camp. Tucked away in a discreet lane in Rastapeth, PGI restaurant may not be the most accessible but that probably explains why not many people know about it. PGI may sound like a unusual name for a restaurant but we are told it stands for Poona Goan Institute. From outside, the old building doesn't look impressive at all but from inside it really is quite decent though don't go expecting a fine dining experience.
Ok... I always wanted to try this place.. So finally got a chance... The family room section is decent.. Ambience... Perfect for a romantic dinner. The food tasted OK. For most of the menu which you ask for, they dont have it. I dont know why they display it in menu card then..
Most amazing sea food . A must visit for non vegetarians.too good.may be crowded and noisy though.ambience isnt that good but who cares when the foods so good :D
A great place with good ambience, both for family and for friends. They have a separate family room so it won't be a problem. Liquor is cheap. Do NOT order too many chiciken dishes; sometimes the chicken is too old and smelly.
The clincher is the seafood. Hats off to it. I've never eaten a tastier prawns koliwada in my life. It's just divine. Bombil fry is also delicious. Most seafood items wont disappoint you.
And all this for a very affordable price !!
I used to visit the place twice every week, about six months ago. Till the waiting staff started acting weird.
They proved themselves to be overfriendly, arrogant, and oblivious to whether you are with your family or with female friends. They don't mind cracking rotten jokes and forget their place. I stopped visiting since then. But I miss the food ..!
Good Place to enjoy sea food. One of the oldest place. Servise is bit slow.. Bu food is good. Getting parking in pick hours is bitt hectic here. Kids friendly. Nice and clean. Must Visit Place for Goan Food... Paradise For Them.
Must Try Dishesh

Best for seafood but drinking is there so not for family.
Best seafood in Camp. Visited this place a couple of time and now it's my favourite. They have fresh fish and a variety of them. Best dish to try is Bombil Koliwada, surmai Tandoori and Surmai Goan Curry
Tried out PGI Restaurant in Camp. They have a beautiful ambience with a Goan Theme. We had starters, Prawns Koliwada and had ordered Kebab platter .
There was 3-4 different varieties of Kebab and it was very filling for 5 of us. We then had light main course just butter chicken and rice and ended our dinner with Sizzling Brownie that was delicious. You must visit this place. After that also order food twice from Zomato where there were offers of 20% discount. Food taste and quantity was the same. No compromise. Thank you for the yummy food
Awesome place, our oldest hangout since 2003 when I was working in Sagar Plaza. Been visiting this place since then and is one of my favorites. The quality of food is great and the team is very friendly.
PGI is a much talked about Seafood restaurant in Pune. Food was superb, service was promt and even on a Sunday evening while the restaurant was busy, we didnt have to wait for a long time for our order. We tried Bangda fry and crab masala. Fish was fresh and both the dishes were tasty. After starters we ordered for dal kichdi and palak kichdi. Over all a great experience. To add on they are now live on Swiggy.
They have both options, common seating and private rooms. As our group was big so we opted for the private one. You can get drinks from outside liquor shop but you need to pay corkage charges. Food was really good. Staff was good. Sea food is their speciality. It was a nice experience though.
Amazing food. Specially the sea food.
We took pomfret and surmai.
Going to visit again very soon.
We went for a crab soup in PGI, but ended up ordering delicious carb tandoor. Crab tandoor was full of masala and every bite was a lust of tender meat.
Bombli fry is also a must try.
One of the best restaurants in Pune please do visit
Awesome ambiance, specially in the evening hours and equally great food and quality moreover choice of spirits to go along. While ordering food, ask for recommendations from the captain/waiter for the most yummiest and freshest sea food. Highly recommend to try sea food or non vegetarian options. recommended to order cocktails, go for high spirits or the choice of beers.
Quality Service & First Class Management,All Hotel Staff Is Helpful Especially Manager Baba Sheth...
Good place, delicious food, excellent staff and good ambiance 👍👍
Best place for sea food. They serve all types of Goan food.
"I recently had the pleasure of dining at PGI Restaurant, and I must say that it was an amazing experience. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a warm welcome and made to feel right at home. The ambiance of the restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the service was top-notch.
