Akshaya Bhavan in Tiruvallur, one of our regular places for a morning breakfast enroute Tirupati, or Tiruttani. I have written about a previous visit here. This time, we were there for a temple visit in Tiruvallur, so we didn’t look any further and stepped in. As we entered, immediately found that they seemed to have reorganized the tables. The exit to the childrens play area and restrooms was closed and now just one restroom each, for ladies and gents is available in the restaurant premises.

A very good vegetarian restaurant on the Thiruvallur highway. All the dishes prepared here are really tasty and it also has an separate ac hall. Car parking is a big plus here.
Must try are mushroom pizza (available at evening),paper roast, meals (afternoon),chilly parottta, filter coffee. Meals provided here costs 120 RS which is unlimited and the podi they provide with it is really tasty.

I had gone to the Ayyapanthangal branch of this restaurant. It's on a main road and opens up to a huge parking space. I, along with dad, mom and bro sat for lunch in an air conditioned room which was arranged very well.
We were treated really well. The hospitality was just amazing. They were ready to serve us till we left the restaurant.
We had ordered for South Indian meals. The only word I use to define the quality and taste is 'awesome'. It is way better than most of the restaurants in Chennai which claim to serve the best tasting saapaadu. It also made me feel light in spite of having such a heavy meal.
Visit this place for food, positive-feeling ambience and hospitality.
Ps- The way the staff served me, I didn't mind tipping them half the bill amount.

At the outskirts of Chennai in a town of Thiruvallur is a restaurant called Akshaya Bhavan. Located on the route from Chennai to Tirupati this became our pitstop for breakfast when we went to Tirupati as a family.  With a team of my inlaws, my wife's aunt and then my wife, son and myself it was never going to be an easy choice to eat. But waking in the early morning and then just relieved to have crossed Chennai traffic meant that we all agreed to stop here.

Akshaya Bhavan is a hearty Tamilian restaurant which meant that they did not have a menu card on the board but the waiter rattled off the items when asked. Pongal, Vada, Idli, Ghee Roast Dosa, Masala Dosa and Idiappam were the dishes available.

An order of Pongal, Vada and Idlis followed. The pongal was flavored just right and tempered so well with a dollop of ghee on top that it settled well in your stomach yet you did not feel heavy. The crisp vadas were some of the best I have had and it had fantastic fresh coconut chutney to go with. The idlis surprising came out with only chutney and we specifically had to order sambhar but the waiter obliged quickly. This was then followed with some great south Indian Kumbakonam filter coffee and tea for my inlaws.

Every item that we ate was traditionally good. No flamboyance, no fanfare just plain good food served up quickly to the table to many hungry souls like us. The coffee was one of the most authentic tasting filter coffee that I have had in Chennai and much better than Adigas and very close to the MTR coffer that I had about couple of years ago.

It is usually said that seasoned housewives or maamis from down south are usually the biggest critics of restaurant food. With jabs like 'what's so great about this' and 'what's in this to make it so costly' or even better 'I could have made this better'; they can pretty much water down the most enthusiastic restauranteurs.  It is then that I realized the worth of Akshaya Bhavan. My inlaws and aunt were completely gaga over the vadas and pongal they ate and that's tribute to the quality and home like taste that the team at Akshaya Bhavan could out to the table.

A fantastic place to take a break end route to Tirupati and complemented by some great, rustic and authentic south Indian fare.
