MTR needs no introduction, it's a legendary restaurant in Bengaluru. So I was very excited to visit their outlet in Udupi. We visited MTR for dinner, as expected it's jam packed. We ordered rava idli, rava masala dosa, bisi bele bath and filter coffee. They serve small cup of ghee with every dish you order. I really loved that fluffy rava idli and that golden crispy rava masala dosa. Bisi bele bath was really amazing and filter coffee was perfect. Ambience of this place is amazing and service was quick. I read the story of invention of rava idli and the reason behind it, which is interesting. I am really looking forward to visit their original establishment in Bengaluru.
When it comes to authenticity and trademark no other restaurants (that i have been to) can't beat MTR. It's all about the rich history of the hotel that has been serving almost for a century. I have also been to Bengaluru branch. And the taste of the food and quality of the food reamains same. That's what brings people to this hotel. Great food. Everything the menu offers is great in taste and quality.
The perfect place to have a wholesome south Indian breakfast.
The Onion Rava Dosa is delicious, although a little oily. I don't like the fact that it's served with Korma instead of Sambar but it can be ordered separately free of cost.
The Rava idli is their speciality and it's as good as they say.
The filter coffee is really good and it's a perfect conclusion to the meal.
I got a suggestion to visit this place for one of the best South Indian food.
I should agree this is really worth it. I loved the taste of each and every dish we ordered.
We had multiple dish ranging from masala dosa to puri dosa and fmany more.
Puri Dosa was something new dish I had.
Overall loved the place and a must visit if you love South Indian food

Lovely, clean restaurant. We visited this place enroute to Mangalore. We had poori which is served with a potato bhaji and chutney, was very good. Mom had the set dosa, which was decent nothing exceptional. The cutlet was average. Excellent service and a nice clean feel to the place.its a place you would go to if in the vicinity, but not a place you would trek to.

Been to this place for the morning breakfast, we had ordered Rawa Dosa, masala dosa, poori bhaaji, sheera, Idli and filter coffee, yes the taste is as delicious as it recommends, oldest outlet since 1924 comes with purity of food quality, must visit place.
There is a feeling of awe and history when you step into this restaurant. It was established in 1924, which is an awesome franchise to have built up.
Unfortunately, we had gone in the evening and they do not serve meals in the evenings. So we settled for dosas. Was decent but could have been a little more crisp. Service was decent.
Want to have authentic South Indian food? MTR is the place to go! Try any of their dosas and you are surely falling in love ❤️ I've had Rawa plain dosa, Rawa masala dosa etc and all were done beautifully. They give their dosas with green mint chutney, Sambhar and desi ghee. Their rawa idli is also great and filter coffee is amongst the best. If you want a good night's sleep, then order their badam milk. It is so flavourful and heavy at the same time, that you're surely getting the best sleep at night after savouring it. Overall, MTR is my favourite place in Manipal/Udupi.
Must try - Bisi bele bath
It was served with a tiny cup of ghee which adds much taste to the dish. Writing this after a week of my visit there, I can still remember the taste. Best Bb bath ever had
The quintessential MTR (Mavalli Tiffin Room) with better ambiance and service. That's 1 line review for this place.
Visited this franchise in Udupi during my coastal tour and I must say, the legacy and bar set by MTR, which originally started in Bengaluru has been maintained in all their franchises.
With time though, MTR has become expensive and i would compare it with VW Beetle. Originally designed and built as a economical family car in 1940s, it is today a premium expensive hatchback.
But still... its one go to place for a typical, perfect South Indian breakfast or dinner, which i always enjoy.
Ratings:
Location: A 4.5.. premium upmarket locality in Udupi.
Taste: A 4.5.. I don't have to describe anything when it comes to MTR.
Ambiance; A 4.5.. Way better that what it used to be from my early teen days.
Service: A 3.5.. quick for standard meals, slow for A-la-carte.
Price: A 3.5.. Very high for a simple vegetarian South Indian menu.

MTR also known as Mavalli Tiffin Room is one of the best places in and around Udupi to get a dosa. They have a long history of the restaurant which is decorated on their walls.
They use authentic ghee in almost all their products which requires oil and provides you with a very small sample of ghee along with your dish so as for you to authenticate the type of ghee they are using to cook their dishes.
All of their south indian dishes are mouth watering specially everything with Rava. Their sambar has a unique taste of it's own which you can't forget and their chutney being a very thick paste of coconut and spices.
This restaurant is a little pricey as you can tell that their dosa are around 90 rs each and one cup of tea is 30 Rs.
But believe me when I say that it's worth every paisa you will be spending over here.
They are very uptight about cleanliness and there is a high chance that whenever you visit, you will find one person brooming the floor. Don't get me wrong, this is an amazing quality for a restaurant as it provides you with an insight on their hygienic levels.
Toilets in the restaurant is also very clean and hygienic. This restaurant seems to be a part of a Hotel which you can see right behind me, but caters to the tourists more often than just hotel guests.
Small and clean restaurant and simple ambience. Staffs are polite. Tried mini tiffin combo when I visited first quntity of good enough and off course tatse was great. Been here couple of times now I liked almost all the snacks but I loved Badam halwa 😋. It is really amazing. Do try all the snacks it is very tasty.

Food is amazing. Open Dosa and Bisibelabath is lip smacking. Most of their dishes are served with ghee and it sure does add that extra flavour to the food. The only drawback is that they have very limited menu.

Delicious crisp dosas , the variety of rice and sweet dishes all made in pure ghee and tastes absolutely divine....the filter coffee was the cherry on top.

Must for South Indian food lovers. A little on the expensive side. Good in groups. Their Chandrahara which is available only on Sundays is a must try. Their kesari bath is pretty good too.

Ordered the Meal and was impressed with everything that came with it. The poori’s were soft. The masala dosa was just like it is supposed to be.
The payasam and date desert was good.

I visited this place with my brother on a recent visit to udupi. My family had gone here earlier and given great reviews. It turned out to be really good. We ordered juice and thali. It was quite filling. It is a standard South Indian thali. I liked the idea of ordering dosa instead of chapattis. The dishes were too good. We had a peaceful dinner. The staff is very polite. I was told to check out the badam halwa. But they had provided payasam and the meal turned out to be heavy. Next time!!

Mavalli Tiffin Rooms, have a great function of preparing foods. It's known for south Indian items. I recommend this place for great ambience, service and food quality. Rates are little costlier but the quality is beyond the expectations. Try this out!!
Definitely a good place to visit for typical south Indian food. Variety in the menu is pretty much limited. Service is not bad. Food is great. Espcially Sheera, it's delicious. Adding varieties to the menu will make it even more better.
Neat and clean restaurant for real South Indian food. Every item has ghee in it so if you are not a ghee person this place is not for you. The Rava dosa is also made with ghee and not oil. Service is good. There is a special dessert available only on Sunday’s called Chandra something and that is also great!
I have tried almost everything on the menu. Masala dosa , rawa idly are must try. Even chandrahara which they make on Sunday only is good. Unlimited tiffin is good too .
Tips: never drink the welcome drinks they give with unlimited meals .It will be very very sweet and kills the hunger

We visited there for breakfast, tried Sambar Vada, Dahi Vada, Mangalore Buns, Poori saahu, Masala Dosa. Sambar Vada tasted good, Masala dosa made with Ghee was wonderful to taste, Mangalore Buns was so delicious, Poori Saahu & Dahi Vada tasted good. Overall we had a wonderful experience taste wise. The ambience and service was good. Restrooms available. The price was on the higher side but the quality of the food was so good.
Mini Tiffin, Thali, Dosas, Sheeras and Badam milk are to die for. Best place to visit after Shri Krishna Darshan.

One of my favourite places in Udupi to have a nice breakfast or to have great dosas at any time of the day! Ragi dosa has become my new favourite dosa from MTR!! It tastes so unique😋, you don't even feel like ragi! It's so soft and healthy as well.
Service is great, staff are good and the place has a good ambience.
Can be visited with family and friends or dine alone as well.
Parking space is also available.

Lovely casual place that is open most of the time late into evening. Great thali. We ate in and ordered special thali. It was very filling. Lots of options for rice and great portion sizes. We could order more puris and refills on the food too. We also took one thali as a takeaway parcel and the portion they gave was very big. Packed really well too.

This place shares the compound with the luxury boutique hotel Samanvay. Hygiene and service is top notch. Parking space is almost nonexistent and one has to park on the road. Apart from that, a very good place.
Had softest ever set dosa. Highly recommend. If only cleanliness was also as top notch as their food. The table I sat on had wipe marks indicating dirty cloth being used to wipe tables.
