Just what i was looking for in this quiet Fort Cochin area, amidst art and food culture good. Great value.
This is fairly new venture in the Kochi food scene, which I've now had the chance to try out two or three times. I don't live in the city, but I do visit once or twice year from abroad as my family are based here, and I'm always on the lookout to try something new/different.
Porta Rossa can be a little tricky to locate, but it does come up on google maps. Taxi drivers/rickshaws won't have much idea but the street name should ring a bell with them.
The restaurant is fairly simple and casual. It has seating on two levels and does require navigating up some pretty narrow stairs. Their open area seating is on the top most floor and on the first floor you have the closed off, air conditioned seating. Just a word of warning - on one of our visits there was a sudden deluge of rain, which completely flooded Peter Celli St and water started seeping through the roof of the restaurant too. Perhaps we were just unlucky, but something to keep in mind during the monsoon.
Service: I do think there are a few kinks they need to work out with their staff as a lot of them speak very minimal English and are not that knowledgeable about the dishes. If you speak Hindi, you might fare better! There is an Indian lady who I believe is the manager who is fantastic. If you have any doubts or questions, I'd ask for her. There have also been a few mix-ups with our dishes, with starters being served after our mains or the wrong drinks being brought out. Hopefully with time and experience, things will run more seamlessly.
Food: I've only really tried out their pizzas, which are thin crust and served with delicious toppings. There are a good range of options; whether you are a seafood lover, craving a meat fiesta or prefer to stick to your veggies. They do serve a complimentary plate of bruschetta on arrival and their pasta's are also yum. The tiramisu was surprisingly well done!
Price: Very reasonable prices for the quality and quantity of food.
Overall: I'd still give this place 5 stars despite the hiccups with the service and staff because the food is really delicious and the prices are reasonable.
The best pizza we had in India. Large portions, and great value! They had an introduction discount of 40%, which made it even a better deal!
