The restaurant serves with south India/ Gujarat food from many years, still the taste was same only.. whoever coming to Surat from south India they can have the real south food here, taste like southern only. Especially dosa/ vada same chettinad style n serves with coconut chutney, sambar.. must try vada sambar/ poori sabji/ masala chaas
Roopa restaurant which I believe is one of the oldest restaurant in the locality, some say its almost 40 years old. This simple restaurant is located on the Railway Station Road. Mine was a delivery as we were staying in a hotel and was looking for a good simple food. Not much knowing about the eatery options in and around the area, we simply went by the reviews and ratings on ZOMATO . Wanting to eat something light and filling , being a pakka South Indian went on to order IDLI , SADA DOSA, APPAM ( A kind of a dosa usually found in the south Indian region of kerala, but now available all accross) , CUTLET and a HYDERABADI DUM BIRYANI (Cant be too southiee ;) )
The food came in hot and packed well; delivered right on time (Thanks to the zomato delivery person). The delivery cover contained a good 4-5 paper plates , tissues ,7-8 spoons and ofcorse the food (As I had provided these special instructions of cutileries and etc while ordering on zomato and it was taken care of well.)
Talking about the food , the IDLIS were soft and a bit warm (Which I believe was microwaved or steamed before packing). To the surprise it wasn’t hard as we ordered it for dinner. I must say, the right blend of ingredients and proper fermentation can only keep the idlis soft throughout the day. The APPAMS were again soft and thin. The SADA DOSA which was rightly roasted making it brown and slightly crisp on the outside. CUTLET was crispy but average.
Last but not least,
The HYDERBADI DUM BIRYANI- Wholesome amount of vegetables, dunking into that light green blended masala and spices making love to that long grain basmati rice was the star of the dishes we ordered.
Now coming to the CONDIMENTS, that was served along.
IDLI and SADA DOSA- SAMBAR ( Tastes above average and to the surprise wasn’t runny and watery) & CHUTNEY ( Chutney was actually tasting fresh, seemed like it was grinded freshly before the order)
APPAM - Served with KADALA CURRY ( A black chickpea or Kala Chana preparation usually served along side of Appam and Puttu ( A steamed breakfast dish made up of rice flour;usually red rice, mostly found in kerala/google for further info and recipe/). The curry definitely had a hint of coconut milk and other spices including garlic. It tasted too good, I couldn’t actually stop tasting it alone.
*HYDERABADI DUM BIRYANI- It came with a Mix Veg SALAN (A curry type preparation usually made of onion-tomato gravy or the makhani gravy that compliments well with the biryani, pulao or any rice prep) and ofcorse the RAITA and some roundels of ONIONS & wedges of LEMON, nicely packed in a zip pouch.
We were actually impressed by the taste and the quality of not only the FOOD but also the PACKAGING ( Which actually,is also a main factor not many RESTAURANTS takes care well. This defines the quality of the restaurant as well as the food).
So next time when I am in town I will definitely try some of the other dishes from Roopa Restaurant and if possible will try to dine in too.
Overall Gist - Though we got the food delivered , the food didn’t disappoint us and I highly recommend people to try this restaurant. Don’t go by the appearance, when checked some of the pics on zomato .. the ambience is very simple. But as its said don’t judge a book its cover.
Recommendation - HYDERABADI DUM BIRYANI and the APPAM.
keep smiling and keep fooddinngg...
